Q: | There are so many files on Vilja's Nexus page, which file(s) do I need? |
A: | You ONLY need to download the main mod for Vilja available under "Main Files" (the top one with a thumbnail "Vilja in Skyrim"). If you have the Dragonborn DLC, you should also consider downloading Vilja in Solstheim, which is an optional add-on that allows Vilja to be aware and have chatters about Solstheim. If you have the Hearthfire DLC, you should consider downloading the Hearthfire Kids Moving Fix, which is a standalone mod that allows you to move your adopted kids to a new home location if your spouse is customly voiced and doesn't have the dialogue option (the equivalent is already implemented in TMPhoenix's Hearthfire Multiple Adoptions). All other optional files are for custom appearances, various fixes, and guides. Back to Top |
Q: | How do I install the mod? |
A: | Make sure your character is not already inside The Bannered Mare when you install Vilja. Otherwise, she may not follow you properly. Manual Install (Recommended)
Nexus Mod Manager or Mod Organizer
PLEASE NOTE: If you are using Vilja in Solstheim add-on, the Vilja unique body patch, or any of Vilja's alternate looks that requires a patch esp, you should not activate the patch along with Vilja. You need to meet up with Vilja in Bannered Mare, go through the very first part of her quest until you can access her inventory via dialogue. Save and exit game, then enable the esp patch(es). Back to Top |
Q: | What's the load order for Vilja? |
A: | There's nothing in particular that you need to be aware about Vilja's load order. You can have her anywhere in your mod list according to instructions from other mods you are using. Back to Top |
Q: | How do I upgrade from a previous version? |
A: | Before you upgrade, it is recommended to bring Vilja to a safe interior cell and tell her to "Relax here for a while". Move your character to another cell. Save and exit game. Manual Upgrade (Recommended) To upgrade Vilja, just replace everything with the updated version and continue to play (if you know for sure that you don't have previous versions of Vilja's loose scripts in Data, then you only need the bsa and esp). We have done our utmost to ensure that there shouldn't be any problem. Nexus Mod Manager or Mod Organizer Just install the new version of Vilja normally, select YES when prompt about upgrade, and YES TO ALL when prompt about overwrite. If she behaves oddly after upgrading, don't panic. Cast the reset-spell on her, it should help. If it does not help, go somewhere else and summon her. If she is still acting strange, ask her to spar with you. PLEASE NOTE (for ver 3.02 and prior): If you are using Vilja in Solstheim add-on, the Vilja unique body patch, or any of Vilja's alternate looks that requires a patch esp, you should deactivate the patch before upgrading. You need to recruit the new Vilja after upgrading. Save and exit game, then re-enable the esp patch(es). Back to Top |
Q: | How do I uninstall the mod? |
A: |
|
Q: | How do I reinstall Vilja? And what about the progress in her storyline? |
A: |
|
Q: | When I install Vilja ver 4 or later, I was prompted if I should overwrite 0_master.hkx (path: Data\Meshes\actors\character\_1stperson\behaviors and Data\Meshes\actors\character\behaviors)? |
A: | These files are created by Fore to correct the hug-kill bug. They are identical to the files supplied in the latest version of Fore's New Idles in Skyrim (FNIS) and Unofficial Skyrim Patch (USKP). It's okay to overwrite these files. Back to Top |
Q: | How do I install Vilja's add-ons, such as Vilja in Solstheim, Vilja Tiny Christmass-addon, etc.? |
A: | Manual Install (Recommended)

General Information
Q: | Is Vilja a resource/cpu-intensive mod? |
A: | Contrary to what many believes, Vilja is actually a light mod. Vilja does contain many scripts, but most scripts are only run once during a specific dialogue. We have done our utmost to ensure that Vilja is not performance-heavy when designing her and scripting. Back to Top |
Q: | Are there any known incompatibilites with Vilja? |
A: | Nothing devastating, but a few minor:
|
Q: | Is this mod Compatible with other companion mods or follower overhauls? |
A: | Yes, but don't expect to be able to use the features from those mods on her. If you can, you shouldn't. Trying to use one of her features through the same feature from another mod may damage her AI and settings. Back to Top |
Q: | I just upgraded Vilja, I just reinstalled Vilja, or I just started a new game with Vilja, and I have no access to her inventory now. |
A: | You are probably using Vilja in Solstheim add-on, the Vilja unique body patch, or an alternate look that requires a patch esp for her. And when you upgraded Vilja or starting fresh with Vilja, you didn't deactivate these related esp patch(es). Since these esp patches are built based on older version of Vilja, you need to have them disabled. Once you've met up with Vilja and can access her inventory via dialogue. You can save and exit game, then re-enable the patch. Back to Top |
Q: | She is bald and naked and won't talk at all. |
A: | This happens if you are using an outdated version of Skyrim, didn't place the BSA correctly in the Skyrim\Data folder, or the BSA data has been corrupted somehow (which can happen during download). If you are using a localized (different language) version of Vilja, make sure you are using the same version number for both esp and bsa. Back to Top |
Q: | She simply does not exist in my game! |
A: | First, please make sure Vilja is activated in your mod list, and you have also searched around Whiterun and Jorrvaskr's courtyard (there are a few mods that make NPCs wander around from their editor location). Otherwise, this may happen if you are using an outdated version of Skyrim, or the download/installation was corrupted. Please make sure that Skyrim is up-to-date and reinstall Vilja. Back to Top |
Q: | I have crashes when travelling to certain area. |
A: | Please slightly adjust your load order, this may be happening due to a change in a location added by other mods that don't agree with Vilja. Usually giving priority to other mods in load order should work for most cases. Back to Top |
Q: | When I try to trade things with Vilja, her inventory is greyed out. What do I do? |
A: | Out of boredom, Vilja may have taken an interest in the lumber business although she verbally thinks it's boring work. So first make sure she isn't over encumbered by firewood or other things. In ver 1.0, there was a little bug with selling objects. You need to flush her weight count. Select her in the console and type RemoveItem XX0C38D4 99999999 (Instead of XX type the first two digits you see when she is selected on the console. The problem should be cured with ver 1.1. Back to Top |
Q: | I took a look at Vilja's inventory, and found that she has many torches! |
A: | This is a minor script mistake in ver 3.02 or older, where Vilja will duplicate the number of torchers she has when playing music, Back to Top |
Q: | After an unexpected situation, I can no longer access Vilja's inventory. |
A: | Do the following, it should help:
|
Q: | When I'm dancing with Vilja, my male character uses a "seductive" female dancing style... |
A: | You are most likely using AFT. AFT *replaces* the normal, gender independant, dancing style with this "seductive" one, and it affects every npc, including the player. You can download and install AFT NoDances optional file to use the original, intended, dancing style again. Back to Top |
Quests
Q: | The scenes (conversations between Vilja and other NPCs) are not starting properly. |
A: | Are you by any chance using a FNIS-addon called ASX? This is reported to cause problems with preventing various scenes from starting. Should Vilja get involved in combat when a scene is started, this might prevent her from completing it. A solution is to smack one of the people who are supposed to be participating in the scene. Back to Top |
Q: | Wilbert has promised Vilja to teach her how to play a lute, but when I speak with him, he doesn't teach Vilja. |
A: | When you speak to Wilbert, please TAB out of the dialogue before it closes on its own. This will clear Wilbert's status of currently engaging in a conversation with player, which was stopping the scene from starting. In ver 4 or later, this should be cured. Back to Top |
Q: | I was told to hopefully rescue Magda, but when I arrive at the dungeon, she is no where to be found! |
A: | This is a problem in ver 3.0 to 3.02, and should be cured in ver 4 or later. You can get around the problem by opening the console, click on Vilja and take note of her FormID, then enter:prid XX1f39bd (replace XX with first 2 digits of Vilja's ID) moveto player This would move Magda to you. There are things in her inventory that will help you advance this quest. If for some reason, the above method doesn't move Magda to you, you can also try entering these console commands: prid XX1F39BD (replace XX with first 2 digits of Vilja's FormID) RemoveAllItems player This would transfer all items from Magda's inventory to your inventory, take a careful look in your inventory, something will help you proceed this quest.Back to Top |
Q: | Vilja won't romance me becaues I'm already married. What to do? |
A: | Try one of the divorce mods, for instance GuruSRs DIVORCE or A Simple Marriage Mod. Back to Top |
Q: | I have told Vilja she is just a buddy, but now I regret this and want to romance her. What do I do? |
A: | You should sooner or later get a random question from her that will allow you to tell her you love her. But, that might take time, and if you are eager, you can correct it by opening the console, click on Vilja so that her FormID shows up, and enterSetStage AAEMCompViljaRomance1 5 setfactionrank XX0845F8 1 This means you have told her that she is more than a friend to you. But, don't try this if your character is married to someone else. She will know. And she won't be happy!Back to Top |
Q: | I am finding ingredients for Vilja, and I cannot find a small pearl! |
A: | Suggestion from Furgas, Nexus: Clear Geirmund's Hall near Ivarstead. It’s fast and easy and has a guaranteed small pearl sitting on a plate next to the boss chest you reach after the final fight. Check the wiki for details. If you have installed CACO (Complete Alchemy and Cooking Overhaul by Kryptopyr), you will be looking for a "Pearl" instead of a "Small pearl" as this mod changes the name of some ingredients. Vilja will consider the Pearl a Small pearl. Back to Top |
Q: | I married Vilja, and later I by accident told her that she is my buddy, not my loved one. Now she doesn't believe we are married anymore... |
A: | This was a glitch in ver 2.03 and prior, and this is cured in ver 3 and later. If you ran into this glitch, you can easily sort it out by open the console, click on Vilja so that her FormID shows up, and then type in the console:setfactionrank XX0845f8 106 (replace XX with first 2 digits of Vilja's FormID) Now she will again realize that you are married.Back to Top |
Q: | Vilja asked me to help her find a book Tamriel Flora Illustrated? |
A: | It's for sale in three of the major alchemy stores in Skyrim, i.e. in three of the major cities. Vilja will give you hints about one of these locations. If you have been to one of these stores recently before Vilja ask about the book, it may be that the book doesn't instantly show up in this particular store. Go to another store, or re-visit the store after a few game-days. Back to Top |
Q: | I can't complete the ingredient list quest even though I have already collected all ingredients on the list. |
A: | Somewhere along the questline you'll receive a list of ingredients to collect. This is stuff that YOU should collect. These are not the same as the ingredients Vilja collects for herself. Even if you are done with the ingredients list, she can still have a journal topic to help her looking for her ingredients. That topic is about her own ingredients. 'Help her' finding her own ingredients means giving her the opportunity to look for them. You can not find them for her. Just be patient with Vilja, she will eventually find the ingredients she need, and she will ask for your help for the more rare ones. To help Vilja, make sure to take her with you while traveling in the wilderness, she only collects ingredients if there's no enemies around and she is not horse riding. Back to Top |
Q: | I have completed Vilja's original main quest (bottle-quest) and she has agreed to stay with me in Skyrim. When will the romance start? |
A: | Be patient, it might take some ingame days. Some things to think about:
|
Q: | The romance-track refuses to proceed, and Vilja and I have been dungeon-crawling for days now! |
A: | Vilja won't talk about romance in hostile areas! Go somewhere that is more peaceful. Certain steps of the romance track will only take place if you are in a city or village. At one point, Vilja will be very persistant about visiting certain cities. It's for a reason! If you really need more specific help, you can download the guide Romance Spoilers For Very Nervous Suitors. Back to Top |
Q: | I am at the point of proposing to Vilja, but as soon as I asked Vilja to marry me, the game freezes everytime! |
A: | This no longer happens in ver 4 or later. To get around this rare bug, you can simply tell Vilja to not get too excited about this and skip the proposal scene, thus avoiding the game from freezing. The romance and wedding quest will proceed normally. Back to Top |
Q: | I'm looking for a certain book for Vilja's mom, but it's not for sale anywhere! |
A: | There's a certain dunmer lady who recently met her mom again - she is the author of one of the books for Vilja's mom. For the other book - several - but not all! - alchemists have it for sale. But, it's not in their barter-inventory. Look in their topic-lists instead, you should be able to ask several of them about this book. Back to Top |
Q: | Previously, when I played the wedding-party, we danced a special wedding-dance. This time, the topic is missing! Why? |
A: | One of the following npcs are not present: Ra'Zehn, Wilbert, Sindra. Look outside, maybe they got lost on their way to the party? Back to Top |
Q: | Tindra refuses to go to the temple, and the wedding ceremony won't start! |
A: | This was a problem in ver 2.0, and was fixed in 2.01 or later. In ver 3, Vilja's family's presence are no longer mandatory for the wedding ceremony to start. Back to Top |
Q: | When will Vilja be able to use her bard-chants? |
A: | After you have help Vilja to complete the quests for Wilbert, Vilja needs some time to study the books Wilbert provided. She will tell you soon that she has now read up enough to use them. She will learn a few more chants if you complete more radiant quests for Wilbert. Back to Top |
Q: | Wilbert has given me a quest location in Solstheim/Dawnguard/Falskaar etc. that I absolutely have no access to! |
A: | Talk to Wilbert again. He has a topic about quest-location. This will allow you to get a new location instead of the one you felt was inappropriate. Back to Top |
Q: | Wilbert/Vilja gave me a radiant quest with a location name. I looked at the map, but there's no map marker! |
A: | Sometimes, the radiant quest system will pick locations in a different worldspace other than Skyrim, such as Solstheim/Dawnguard/Falskaar etc., and the map marker won't show up unless you are in that world space. In ver 4 or later, all radiant quests in the mod will remain within Skyrim. Back to Top |
Q: | In one of Vilja's quests, I am supposed to retrieve or find an item. I do have it in my inventory, but Vilja doesn't recognize it. |
A: | First make sure that you don't put it in her inventory, she should recognize it by dialogue when the item(s) is in your inventory. If she doesn't mention or recognize it, trying dropping the item(s) and picking it up again. Back to Top |
Q: | I'm not intending to romance Vilja. Will I still meet her family? |
A: | If you have Vilja in Solstheim, you can meet some her family at The Retching Netch on Middas, regardless if you romance Vilja or not. Without Vilja in Solstheim add-on, this was not possible in ver 2.03 or older. Since ver 3, you can meet Vilja's mom and sisters if you have completed a small quest for Vilja's mom (regardless if you romance Vilja or not, but after Vilja has learned her bard chants). After that, you can even have someone stay over with you for awhile. Back to Top |
Q: | I found a note on a certain body and it tells me where to look for Vilja but the quest doesn't update. |
A: | In older versions of Vilja, the update, which is on the note, was not compatible with all UIs. If you don't get the update, either throw the note on the ground and pick it up again. If this doesn't help, the console command is SetStage AAEMCompViljaQuest1 122 Back to Top |
Dialogue Options
Q: | Vilja has so many dialogue options, is there some guide? |
A: | It is by design to provide most of her options via dialogue, as a human being should communicate with another about behaviours and requesting help. Vilja in Skyrim Dialogues Chart has documented most of her main dialogue options with some brief explanation. Back to Top |
Q: | With which followers has Vilja got special interaction? |
A: | Vilja interacts with many of the vanilla followers on various levels, from basic to quite advanced. For the best experience, I suggest that you go exploring with Vilja and either Lydia, Aela, Farkas, Argis, J'zargo, Jenassa, Jordis, Brelyna or Marcurio. And you will soon find that Vilja not only interacts with them - they will reply, and sometimes they will be involved in quite lenghty discussions. Similar but more generic interactions will happen also with Faelyn, Iona, Ria, Kharjo, Areana, Rayya, Benor, Stenvar, Ahtar, Illia, Uthgerd, Adelaisa and Anneke Crag-Jumper, and with all modder-made companions that are using one of the following vanilla-voicetypes: Female Eventoned, Female Commander, Female Darkelf, Female YoungEager, Male Brute, Male Eventoned, Male Khajiit. With some other popular followers, Vilja has simple interaction, i.e. Vilja will know that they are there and sometimes comment on them, but they will not respond and there will be no discussions between them. These followers are Mjoll, Erik the Slayer and Calder. Back to Top |
Q: | Can Vilja interact with DLC and/or custom-made companions/followers, such as Serana? |
A: | Since ver 3, there's the introduction option to allow Vilja to comment about other DLC and cutom-voiced followers, including 2 of your adopted children, Serana, Frea, Gregor, Rayya, Valdimir, Cerwiden, Dorethi, and Inigo. Out of the listed characters, Vilja can only fully interact with Inigo and the children; for the others, she will recognize their presence and talk to them, but these NPCs will not reply to Vilja. This feature will be expanded in future versions. Back to Top |
Q: | You said Vilja can interact with certain DLC/custom-made NPCs, I have them all following me, but Vilja hasn't interact with them? |
A: | Make sure the custom-made NPCs are installed correctly, and you have to introduce them to Vilja ("Traveling together..." → "There is someone I'd like you to meet."). Back to Top |
Q: | I'm trying to introduce one of the listed NPCs to Vilja, but that option isn't available? |
A: | You may have accidentally used that option to introduce someone else to Vilja. You can reset this by telling Vilja to forget certain previous people you have introduced her to ("Traveling together..." → "Off-topic - Configuration and Settings" → "About people I have introduced you to." → "Forget [NPC's name]").
Q: | My character is married to Vilja, but unlike vanilla spouses, she doesn't have a topic where I can move my adopted children and her to a new house. |
A: | This is a Hearthfire "feature" and it only works with the vanilla voices. As Vilja has a unique voice and no dependancy on the Hearthfire DLC, the scripts that forces Children and spouse to move together won't work with her. But, there is a solution. Among the Main files here you will find a Hearthfire Kids Moving Fix, that will let the children keep their own dialog for moving houses also after you are married. It works not only with Vilja but with any custom spouse with unique voice. TMPhoenix's Hearthfire Multiple Adoptions also has this feature. Back to Top |
Q: | I have given her a new home, but she keeps nagging at me that she would like to have somewhere outdoors to go. What am I supposed to do? |
A: | Vilja's frequent nagging was the behaviour in ver 2.03 and prior. In ver 3 or later, she shouldn't nag as often. Bring her with you to the outside of the house or somewhere exterior. In the topic "About this place" you will find a topic: "This is a nice place to wander". Now she will know where to wander, and whenever she is in her new home and not in follow-mode, she will go for a daily walk in this area. If you change her home, you will have to change where she can walk, too, as it shouldn't be too far away from her home. (She will remind you ) Back to Top |
Q: | In the mod description, it mentioned something about interacting with Vilja using hotkeys, can you explain more? |
A: | Since ver 4, Vilja will give you some "chat horns" to interact with her. These horns are hotkeyable items under apparel (to hotkey an item, first press "F" to favorite them in your inventory, then press a number key (1-8) in your favorites' menu to assign hotkey). The idea of this roleplaying feature is to have a special signal to communicate with Vilja, especially useful when you cannot walk up to talk to her (e.g. during combat, over-encumbered, horse riding, etc.). If you'd like to make use of this feature but is running out of hotkeys, Elepant42's Vilja Hotkeys makes use of SkyUI and SKSE to allow you assign these chat horns to extra hotkeys. Back to Top |
Q: | I play Skyrim on PC with a XBox controller, how do I assign hotkeys? |
A: | There are mods on Nexus that allows you assign hotkeys using D-pad. Back to Top |
Q: | I have been waiting for Vilja to give me these chat horns, when can I get them? |
A: | There are several different horns: a horn with which you can customize the dialogue options, 2 attack horns (melee and ranged) for quick combat orders, and a few chat horns for instantaneous conversations. Vilja will give them to you gradually over a period of time, starting with the first horn when you have taken her to the Eldergleam Sanctuary for the first time. Back to Top |
Vilja's AI and Behaviours
Q: | I met Vilja, and she only shows the option to wait. |
A: | She is not yet your companion until you done the little favor for her. Back to Top |
Q: | I ask Vilja to lead the way, but sometimes she gets confused and/or stops. What is wrong? |
A: | There are glitches in the navmeshing of the game itself, (notably one on the road between Whiterun and Rorikstead, but there are more), and when she runs into these glitches she might get confused. Therefore, we added an option in her dialog when she is leading away: "Let me take over for a brief while". This will allow you to lead her past the navmesh glitch - 10 steps is usually enough. Then you can tell her to continue to lead, and she will resume leading you to the place she was already heading for. (Actually, it may be enough that you just run ahead of her a little, without asking to take over. She will then run up to you and take over lead again, now hopefully in the right direction). Back to Top |
Q: | Vilja is acting weirdly (she can't move, her stats are meshed, the file is corrupted...) |
A: | There is a spell for resetting her. It's in the school of Restoration. Just cast it on her. During some circumstances, if the reset spell doesn't work and she refuses to follow you, ask her to sparr with you. This should help. Back to Top |
Q: | After an upgrade/very unexpected situation, Vilja believes she is following me, but she is not. I can't make her follow me! And the reset-spell doesn't help. |
A: | Ask her to lead the way! Or go somewhere and summon her. Both should make her follow properly again. You can also cast Vilja's reset spell on her. If nothing else helps, ask her to spar with you. Back to Top |
Q: | Followers that are following *Vilja* will not follow me after I have told them to stop follow her; instead they will go home. |
A: | You are using AFT, most likely an older version (there are reports that this is fine with newer versions of AFT). The AFT-system for followers works differently than other systems like UFO, and is set up so that you HAVE to tell them to stop follow YOU Before you ask them to follow Vilja. If you forget to do this, they are never properly dismissed from following you, and when you tell them to stop following Vilja, they are dimissed and start going home, but are still considered following you in their dialogues. Followers following Vilja works perfect with other overhauls. Back to Top |
Q: | When Vilja and I are hugging, one of us dies. This keeps happening even when I reload the game, what do I do? |
A: | This no longer happens in ver 4 or later. The hug-kill bug occurs when the game thinks an actor (you or Vilja) "owe" a death, and since the hug animation is indeed a killmove, the game takes the opportunity and kill the actor. If Vilja dies:
If Player dies:
|
Q: | When Vilja and I are hugging, I suddenly drops down on the floor, and then I was teleport to the same spot standing, and all my magic effects/buffs are gone! |
A: | This no longer happens in ver 4 or later. There are various built-in failsafe measures to avoid player dying when hugging. When all of them fail, the player is resurrected. In this case, your character was resurrected, and resurrection in Skyrim does cause you to lose your magic effects. Please reload the game and follow instructions from the entry right above. Back to Top |
Q: | NPCs and enemies are now attacking air in front of me. |
A: | In ver 3 or later, Vilja has a new following style, which allows her to run in front of the player by following a small invisible actor. This invisible actor has become the hostile targets for NPCs and enemies in your game. We have done some changes to make it friendly with vanilla NPCs and critters, but we are still working on it's external affairs with mod-added NPCs. For now, you can switch off Vilja's new following style in "Traveling together..." → "Regarding your behaviour..." → "Please don't run ahead of me." Back to Top |
Q: | Can I boost her disposition over 100? |
A: | No, it was never intended that you should boost her disposition over 100%. This was an occasional glitch in versions 1.X. If it is over 100%, Vilja will says "Strange" when she resets it to the 100 % (the supposed maximum). Don't try to make her disposition 200 %, it won't work and you'll just hear her say "Strange" a lot. Back to Top |
Vilja's Combat Abilities
Q: | Is Vilja essential? How do I set Vilja to be essential (cannot die)? |
A: | Vilja is protected by default. This means she will fall to her knees when her health is at about 10%, and will be ignored by all enemies, but she still can be killed if attacked/friendly hit by the player. To set Vilja to essential, talk to Vilja, "Traveling together..." → "Off topic - Configuration and Settings" → "I don't want to risk that you ever die (Set Vilja to essential)" Back to Top |
Q: | In my game, Vilja is way too indestructible/overpowering. | |||||||||||||||||||||
A: | This is usually a result of your own game settings: the harder you set the difficulty level, the tougher other npcs will be compared to your character, and this is also valid for Vilja. The following table shows the vanilla ratios in various setting:
Since ver 3, you can customize Vilja's damage intake and output multiplier, more information on this in the next entry below. Back to Top |
Q: | How do I customize Vilja's damage intake and output magnitudes? |
A: | To configure Vilja's damage output (attack power) and damage intake (vulnerability), talk to Vilja, "Traveling together..." "Off topic - Configuration and Settings" "Configuration of damage dealing and receiving." Vilja's attack power and vulnerability are multipliers. Attack power = how many times of base damage Vilja deals every hit. The higher value, the higher the damage she deals. In Skyrim, the base damage is based of the weapon and the user's related skills/perks/buffs. For Vilja, her output damage would be the product of attack power and her base damage. For example, with a hit of base damage of 10 points:
Vulnerability = how many times of base damage Vilja receive every hit. The higher value, the higher the damage she receives. Similar to attack power, with an enemy dealing a hit of base damage of 10 points:
|
Q: | Is there another way to fine-tune Vilja's attack power and vulnerability besides using the configuration menu? |
A: | Yes, you can use console commands for this. Vilja's attack power is using the vanilla unused actor value Fame, and her vulnerability is Infamy. The values these 2 actor values is the exact magnitude multiplier for Vilja's damage intake and output. You change them by opening the console, click on Vilja so that her FormID shows up, and enter:SetAV Fame #.## (replace #.## for the multiplier value you desire, up to 2 decimal places) For example,SetAV Fame 3.75 Vilja's attack will be 3.75 times (i.e. 375%) stronger than her original damage.SetAV Fame 0.65 Vilja's attack will only be 0.65 times (i.e. 65%) of her original damage. The same can be done for infamy.Back to Top |
Q: | What kind of fighting style does Vilja prefer? |
A: | By personality and strong Nord tradition, Vilja prefers melee, but she can handle a bow perfectly fine. When you talk to Vilja, under "Let's talk fighting strategy...," you can tell her the primary fighting style (melee or ranged) you wish Vilja to use, but she will also switch fighting style depending on the combat situation and enemies' distance. Vilja will also be able to cast combat spells after she has learned them in a questline. Back to Top |
Q: | Can Vilja cast magic? |
A: | Yes, she only knows the healing spell at first, and she will heal herself in combat. After she feels that she've known you better, she will offer to heal you as well. Although she repeatedly comments that she is not good at spellcasting, she will also eventually learn a few spells in one of her quests. Back to Top |
Q: | Vilja has started to run away from fights instead of helping me! |
A: | You are probably using the mod Enhanced Mighty Dragons. This mod will cause low level NPCs (from 1 to 9 level) have fear of Dragons and flee away, including followers with stand-alone AI. This affects Vilja ver 1.3-1.4. and you started to do so with Vilja ver 1.3-1.4. With ver 1.5 to 3.02, we have changed her (set her actor-startlevel higher) in order to prevent this. Theoretically, installing ver 1.5-3.02 and casting the Vilja reset-spell on her should clear out the problem for good, but I have heard reports indicating that you might during certain circumstances need to re-install Vilja to permanently get rid of the problem. However, in ver 4 or later, in order to fix an error of using add-ons based on older versions of Vilja, Vilja's startup level is 1 instead of 10, which can be addressed by selecting Vilja in console and enter: SetLevel 10 Back to Top |
Q: | When I check her stats with Overhaul mods, I am told that she is level 1 and her stats are redicilously low. |
A: | Talk to Vilja, "Let's just talk for a little while..." → "How are your skills progressing?". This report will give a correct overview. Vilja is a stand-alone companion, reports for regular followers will not show up correctly on her. Btw, "Level" doesn't do anything with npcs, it's just a number. However, if you are using Enhanced Mighty Dragons, Vilja may flee from battling a dragon if her level is less than 10. Back to Top |
Q: | I use bow when riding horse, but when riding with Vilja, I can draw my weapon(Bow) and Vilja draws her sword, but within a few seconds she is sheathing her weapon back as there is no active threat. Now the bow crosshair of mine just centers onto my horse's body, and i can't target anything. |
A: | The camera angle for horse riding changes whenever the player or the follower(s) draw/sheath their weapons, and this is a known vanilla bug. This mod Stop followers unsheathing when you do will keep teammates from automatically drawing their weapons just because you drew yours, which should alleviate unwanted camera angle changes based on your followers' actions. You may still run into problems if Vilja draws her sword to start fighting while you're mounted, so tell her to avoid fighting while you're out traveling by horse. Back to Top |
Q: | Which spells can Vilja learn? |
A: | During the course of find a cure for someone whom think he was cursed, Vilja will be taught how cast some basic destruction spells. The following are spells she learned or can learn from spelltomes (Vilja will recognize the spelltomes both from your character's and her own inventory):
|
Q: | What are bard chants? When does Vilja learn them? |
A: | Bard chants are Vilja's special combat abilities, similar to shouts, but they are magical melodies used in combat. Vilja will be able to use her bard chants once she became a member of the Bards College, and she can learn 9 chants in total:
|
Q: | Can Vilja fight while mounted? |
A: | Yes, Vilja is fair in both mounted melee and mounted ranged attacks. Back to Top |
Outfits and Wardrobes (This section is mostly identical to the FAQ section in Guide to Vilja's Outfits and Wardrobes)
Q: | I find Vilja's wardrobe system hard to understand. What am I supposed to do? |
A: | For starter, you should take a look at the basic wardrobe manuals. For more information and details, please refer to Guide to Vilja's Outfits and Wardrobes. This is a more comprehensive guide, and it is designed to allow you to jump around the document and just read the information you need. Back to Top |
Q: | I have just installed Vilja, and she is naked when I first met her in the Bannered Mare! |
A: | You are probably playing with Requiem and have just started a new game. This is perhaps related to Vilja's scripts struggling to get initialized alongside with other heavily-scripted mods, Requiem in this case. As soon as you lead Vilja out of The Bannered Mare, she should dress up properly and there are no other negative consequences. Alternatively, this can be easily avoided if you activate Requiem, load and save game after Requiem is initialized, and activate Vilja later. Back to Top |
Q: | The game lags/freezes when Vilja autochanges or enters combat. |
A: | This may be due to lag caused by the clothing, armor, or weapons you have given Vilja being graphically intensive, causing your computer to becoming overloaded when trying to render the change. Try giving Vilja something less-demanding to wear and wield. Back to Top |
Q: | The outfit/wardrobe inventory has duplicated items. |
A: | This is a formlist corruption. Please use "Fix for Corrupt Form Lists" (available here). Instructions are included within the download. Back to Top |
Q: | The outfit/wardrobe inventory shows items that don't exist in her normal inventory. |
A: | This is also a symptom of formlist corruption. Please use "Fix for Corrupt Form Lists" (available here). Instructions are included within the download. Back to Top |
Q: | The outfit/wardrobe inventories are lagging. |
A: | This is normal, there are a number of edits to various formlists going on in the background. Be patient, wait for all movement to stop and select one item at a time. Back to Top |
Q: | The items (and a gold coin) in outfit/wardrobe inventories are disappearing and reappearing later. |

Q: | The tempered upgrades or enchanted statuses are not being shown in outfit/wardrobe inventories. |
A: | This is normal. Although the interface looks like a normal inventory or container, it's not and won't reflect the upgrades or enchantments. Back to Top |
Q: | What is a formlist? |
A: | A formlist is simply a list the game uses for various purposes. Skyrim can access defined fomlists very quickly, which is why formlists are used to allow quick autochanging. However, Skyrim is very slow at editing formlists, which is what's going on when you are selecting items in outfit/wardrobe inventories. Back to Top |
Q: | What is formlist corruption? |
A: | As Skyrim is not very good at editing formlists (thus editing at a relatively slow speed), the process is prone to errors. It is unclear how these corruptions occurs, but here are some common causes for formlist corruption in the wardrobe system:
|
Q: | I am not sure if I have formlist corruptions, what do I do? |
A: | Please use "Fix for Corrupt Form Lists" (available here), carefully following the included instructions. The only negative consequence about this fix is that you have to configure Vilja outfits and wardrobes again. Therefore, it is safe to use this fix first to troubleshoot problems with Vilja's outfits and wardrobes. Back to Top |
Q: | Vilja is naked and she is getting mad at me, what do I do? |
A: | Please check Vilja's wardrobe/outfit status first to see what she is wearing currently, and make sure that particular wardrobe/outfit has items assigned appropriately. If re-configuring her wardrobes/outfits didn't help, then this can be caused by:
|
Q: | Vilja is refusing to put on a certain piece of clothing or armor, and she just stay naked instead. However, she can put on other things properly. |
A: | This is a case of formlist corruption. "Fix for Corrupt Form Lists" (available here). Instructions are included within the download. Back to Top |
Q: | No matter what I am telling Vilja to wear, she stays naked. |
A: | This is a case of formlist corruption. Please use "Fix for Corrupt Form Lists" (available here). Instructions are included within the download. Back to Top |
Q: | When Vilja is playing music, she turns naked. |
A: | Vilja will always remove her armor and put on clothes when she is supposed to play music, as this is a reliable method to make her remove her shield for the animations. If she has no clothes assigned in her current wardrobe, then she will undress and start playing. Back to Top |
Q: | Vilja is temporary naked when changing cells. |
A: | This can be caused by the following:
|
Q: | I have tried using "Fix For Corrupt Form Lists" (also known as "A fix for chargia"). The fix didn't work or the problem has worsened, what do I do? |
A: | Under "Regarding your outfits..." tell Vilja to "wear whatever you like (default - no wardrobes)" and try using the fix again. If the problem persists, then try to ask Vilja to wear the best possible armor ("Regarding your outfit..." → "When you are wearing armor..." → "Regarding your choice of armor..." → "Use the armor that will protect you best"). Ask her not to use armor and then to use armor again. Then use the reset spell on her. Back to Top |
Q: | Vilja's wardrobes or outfits don't seem to work anymore, I have tried the corrupted formlist fix several times, too. I have recently adjusted my mod list, or merged armor and clothing mods together. How do I fix this? |
A: | This could be a game engine flaw, or during the process of merging the mods, where the game didn't recognize and handle changing references correctly. The idea is that you must remove everything from Vilja and to make sure items' references/classes are update correctly, and that her formlists are refresh to record the new references. You will need to do the following (thanks to Unblest for providing the information):
Q: | Would Vilja put on anything that is stolen? |
A: | Although Vilja doesn't like thieving, she will do as you please. Back to Top |
Q: | Vilja's head is invisible. |
A: | This is most likely because you have given her a mask and a hood (or a hooded clothing/armor) that takes up two different body slots and can be equipped at the same time (for instance, the modular Arise armor mod). This is a Bethesda's bug. Try taking those items from Vilja, then cast her reset spell on her. Back to Top |
Q: | I am using version 1.8 of Skyrim, but I really want to use the wardrobe system. |
A: | If you are using version 1.8 of Skyrim (which is a common choice, because of the lip sync bug introduced in the 1.9 patch), then formlists will become corrupted when a form is removed and there is no way to fix it. "Fix For Corrupt Form Lists" (a.k.a. "A fix for chargia") won't help. You will have to choose between using the wardrobe system or version 1.8 of Skyrim. Back to Top |
Q: | What's the difference between "Fix For Corrupt Form List" and "A fix for chargia"? |
A: | There is no difference; they are the exact same file. Emma made it available under Main Files on Nexus for easier access, and also kept the original one under old files for those who has been using it and knew where it was perfectly. The name changed is only because there can't be two files with the same name on Nexus. Back to Top |
Custom Appearances
Q: | How do I install Vilja's alternate look from Vilja's Nexus page? |
A: | Please refer to the readme included with each optional download, some alternate looks may require you to download another mod that provides the necessary original mesh, texture, and esp. Back to Top |
Q: | My Vilja has no eyebrows! |
A: | This is caused by the Pretty Face mod. This mod overrides all the eyebrows of the game. As Vilja is using the vanilla FemaleBrowsHuman09, which use the texture femalebrow09.dds in the folder Data\textures\actors\character\femalebrows, Vilja inherits the Pretty Face eyebrows which are barely visible. Remove or rename the femalebrow09.dds and just use Vilja's .bsa or one of the unedited patches. Back to Top |
Q: | How do I customize Vilja's hair? |
A: | If you have found a hair mod you wish to use on Vilja, please follow the Instruction How to Change Viljas Hairstyle. Back to Top |
Q: | There's a NPC whose head I wish to copy to Vilja. How do I do that? |
A: | please follow Enix Tutorial for replacing Viljas Head. Back to Top |
Q: | I am using some body mod and texture, and Vilja has a neck seam. Can you provide a patch? |
A: | As there are many different body texture mods available, it would be quite time consuming to try to provide patches for all mods. But there are ways to address the problem yourself (but first make sure that the neck seam isn't an actual gap, which indicates a mesh mismatch.):
|
Q: | I am trying to customize Vilja's appearance myself, how do I do that? |
A: | This will require decent knowledge on using the Creation Kit, Nifskope, and programs that edit .obj lightwave objects and .dds texture files. What you will need:
This is a very rough outline:
There's also another method that is simpler by Dubhorizon, the instructions are included within the download. Back to Top |
