This is about how to transform the Skyrim winter into springtime and make Skyrim a much more enjoyable place to explore.
I first posted about this last winter. As it is now winter again I’ve decided to post again and this time to give it its own thread so it doesn’t get lost so quickly amongst other posts.
I find the constant Skyrim winter gets a bit stale after a while, and in any case, who needs winter in Skyrim when you have it outside in the real world as well? So I decided to turn the Skyrim winter into spring.
I use three mods for this, and they really do make a huge difference to the whole feel and ambience of Skyrim and for me they make it a much more pleasant place. I have them on almost constantly, turning thre main one off only temporarily should I need to check something that needs the Skyrim winter. They are:
Springtime Overhaul
Wind Begone
Silent Skyrim-No Music
The Springtime mod is the main one I use. It removes all the snow and ice and transforms the landscape with more grass, wild flowers (including many new types) and animals. It also improves some of the trees, so for instance the Rift trees now have green leaves instead of yellow-brown. The only minor drawbacks are that occcasionally some grass pokes through some decks etc. and there's some increased rainfall instead of the snow. The mod has no loose files and can be switched off and on again at any time.
However, the springtime mod doesn’t remove the annoyingly incessant and unrealistically loud wind noise. The second mod, ‘ Wind Begone’, does exactly that and it really is a blessed relief once that noise has gone. However I also prefer not to have the Skyrim background music playing constantly. The third mod removes it.
There is one minor drawback in that some vanilla ambient sounds now sound quite loud, probably because otherwise Bethesda couldn’t make them heard over the wind noise. There are very few of these though, mainly some fox and rabbit footsteps and horses breathing. In any case I think there’s a mod to lower the first sounds and the second can be removed by an option in the wind begone mod, but I’ve not really found these noises to be a nuisance.
With these three mods installed, I find Skyrim to be a far more pleasant to wander around and I enjoy the scenery and nature much more and also enjoy being able to hear the ambient sounds of the countryside and the towns properly. They also help with enjoying listening to Vilja’s singing. These mods really do make a huge difference.
