Recently picked up a used copy of Oblivion, which runs well except - I can only play thirty minutes to an hour before it CTDs with an "Application Error: The Exception Integer division by zero". I've found nothing online about this specific to Oblivion, in fact most of what I found was on programmer's forums. XP compatibility mode hasn't helped, DEP and UAC have always been disabled on this system, it is not installed in Program Files (it is not even on the same hard drive as the OS), the game is completely stock (no mods yet), and the crashes do not seem related to anything occurring in-game.

I just sent your post to my techy. They sent back: Go to this site. Download the prog and see if it helps. This is usually a memory management error. winwiki.org/the-exception-integer-division-by-zero-0xc0000094/

Just got additional info. They said to get the error number. There's a number of repair programs that are specific to whatever it is.

Are you patched, jgf? Or is it GOTY.. did they even make one for that? I just reinstalled FO3, I'll give Oblivion a go and let you know. Win7? Shivering Isles, or no? (suckyrom is already on this machine so I might as well) I found one, possibly unrelated post: www.gamesas.com/divide-zero-t35878.htmlps (edit) In the mean time, you can always try forums.bethsoft.com ..the game officially supports XP only. Wow, has it been that long since it came out? final edit: In looking through the files I have from that time, there are unofficial patches (by Quarn & Kivan) as well.

I installed Oblivion (original DVD from 2005/6) to my win7 machine on the D drive. I had to install patch 1.2.0416 because I got a video driver crash, but it's good to be patched anyway. I made it through the tutorial issue free - man do I miss being able to cast spells on the fly in Skyrim. I then ran around the wilderness for a half an hour before I got killed by a friggin' bandit. Ah well, anyway I experienced no issues - other than realizing I don't want to invest too much in that game (again).

Finally returned to this. After the next crash, before closing the application error window, I noticed the task bar covered in a string of tiny orange icons; hovering over one got a pop-up - "AC3 filter configuration". These disappeared on closing the error window. I downloaded and reinstalled the AC3 filter and have since played about six hours with no further crashes.
OTOH, Oblivion has a problem I've only experienced in one other game on this system - the keyboard periodically goes dead (even the lights do not activate for caps lock or num lock). This has been an issue with "Thief 3: Deadly Shadows" as long as it has been on this system (it did not occur on the two XP systems on which it was previously installed). This irritant seems completely random in both games, unplugging the keyboard and plugging it back in always clears it up; it may go dead again an hour later or a minute later. BUT, the oddity is this happens with a USB or PS2 keyboard (this system has had two of each over the years); I've always been told not to unplug a PS2 device while the system is on (and on my XP systems windows would not recognize a PS2 device after it was plugged back in), but I am currently using a PS2 keyboard and, when this issue occurs in Oblivion or Thief 3, I can unplug the keyboard and plug it back in and it works. This problem has never occurred in any other game or program, only in Thief 3 and Oblivion.

Ah, there is a can of worms into which I do not wish to delve.
