Walk side by side has two immediately obvious problems. -Vilja often runs backwards. More often than forwards and for long stretches. -It is easy to run Vilja into a wall or off a cliff. She then teleports nearby.
Departing Throat of the World she ran backwards most of the way down the mountain and ran off various cliffs numerous times.
When I took the PC over to a promontory to look at the view Vilja just walked straight off a precipice. I had one of those 'Oh crap! What have I done?' moments. Vilja stopped in mid air about 30 feet down then teleported to the PCs side. There wasn't enough room so the moment the PC moved, off the cliff Vilja went again! We are almost back down to High Hrothgar now. Vilja has ran off cliffs at least 15 times. I'm going to disable that follow choice.
On flat terrain it works excellently except the running backwards most of the time. Any collision however causes her to teleport.

Tested further. On open terrain, especially on roads, she runs the correct way. The backwards running seems to be terrain specific, especially when going downhill. Vilja runs too fast, turns around, then runs backwards.

I can't get her to run backwards no matter what, I can get her to momentarily lose the heading target and get confused if she gets stuck or falls off a small cliff. She is supposed to warp to you if she gets too far away, so that is obvious. If you stop for a moment when she gets stuck she will reset. Running flat out next to a cliff would never be a good idea in real life, you can't expect her to be THAT smart Sniffles

Look, I'm not nitpicking. Just reporting what I encountered. If that is undesirable, just say so. Running backwards

Just for you I started at High Hrothgar and ran all the way down with her to Ivarstead. She didn't get stuck, fall off a cliff or run backwards.... You MIGHT, MIGHT, have reached some sort of memory limit and her scripts aren't running properly. Try giving her a reset. The only way I know of that she would run backwards would be if somehow you had another mod that added side by side behavior and it is conflicting.
In our initial versions she would walk backwards and once the script was set in your save the only way to make it stop was to go to an older save, that is unlikely in your case as I don't think you got ahold of her initial scripts. But that would certainly cause her to walk backwards.
There is no reason at all to stop reporting issues, perhaps someone else will have the same problem. More reports the easier to find the conflict.

Re: walking backwards. Reset her. Her behavior altered somewhat. I had given her permission to run on ahead from the previous Vilja version. That is no longer an option. Without the run on ahead behavior she checks, stops herself just before passing the PC. No walking backwards happens. So it was that checking and backpedaling from the previous version. Likewise she no longer blunders into things or off cliffs post reset. So it was a script from a previous version still active.
I have no mods that alter behavior in any way. Vilja or other. Other than UNP to get mod armor and clothes to fit we don't have any character altering mods at all.

I'm glad to hear that you found the reason for this - it's always a good idea to make sure that Vilja is wandering before updating to a new version. And it is great that this problem showed up already now - thank to you we now know what to tell others that might run into the same problem

I opened the papyrus PDT Wrapper and came up with the following, it flagged them as unattached, if this might help. Two things. I cleaned the game with the PDT Wrapper just yesterday, all clean and spiffy. This was the first time Vilja game up with unattached instances. I went ahead and had it clean things. However, I made a back up yesterday of that HD which has Vilja 4.01. I could recover that if it would help. I also ran the save game cleaner yesterday and ran it again just now. It found 14 DLC and 399 FORMIDs

And it is great that this problem showed up already now - thank to you we now know what to tell others that might run into the same problem It seems that you should have a step by step how to upgrade Vilja for the brain dead like me. Make sure she isn't cooking or attacking mudcrabs etc. When I upgraded she was in follow mode. Maybe. We had pitched the tent and had just slept with her in relax mode. I'm pretty sure I told her to follow again. I wouldn't leave a save game with her not in that mode. Maybe it wasn't the smartest idea to pitch the tent over the time wound thingy? BY THE WAY!!!! GRIPE!! Vilja had just commented 'Will you look at these shoes. They didn't/hardly lasted a week.' Those are brand new heavy wolfcry boots freshly improved the previous day! Take it up with your father, gal! He made the darned things! You might also note M'rissi's tale is starting to get flattened out like a beavers. No wonder she is always griping about people stepping on it.

NEW PROBLEM!!! It is sort of funny. With Vilja in walk side by side mode it can be impossible to face her to speak to her while in first person view. She keeps dashing out of view as you turn to face her to stay at the PC's side! (Spinky was just now going what the hey?? Spinning around and around as Vilja repeatedly dashed out of sight.) This only happens once in a while and can easily be worked around by going into 3rd person mode, or sneaking, or just waiting for Vilja to drop into relax mode. But it can get pretty hilarious when you urgently have to speak to Vilja or respond to some query of hers and find yourself spinning in circles as she dodges around you: "Would you PLEASE STAND STILL for a moment??"

You know, it is a very well done AI. It just hasn't been taken to the next level completely. When the PC stops walking the AI should stop and they could naturally face each other. So the side by side should be dependent upon the PC moving.

It is. However there is some weirdness if you jump from 3rd to 1st.

Then how about this? Call it pie in the sky suggestion. Natural Vilja. Once Vilja and PC start a romance Vilja's normal mode is walking beside the PC and wander when PC stops. The behavior options can over-ride this as required/desired. IE, Vilja is no longer a follower but a partner.
PS I don't think it is the switch from 3rd to 1st as she has that problem when 3rd isn't used at all, at least some of the time. I'd look at the wander when idle trigger thing.

If you want to see something totally hilarious, get Vilja into peekaboo mode with a couple of dogs and two or three followers following her. Now make the giggles exponential, have her do the major crowd circlespin inside a crowded location like the Bannered Mare.
