This has become my go-to house mod but, having OCD, I found myself wondering if there was anything I would change.
First off, since I also use the Real Lights mod, I reduced the ambient lighting in the house (not the grotto) to zero to keep it from being over-lit during the daytime. Evenings look wonderful now, with pools of firelight and areas of shadow.
Secondly, there's a small wooden chest on the crafting table, right next to the lockpick-making station. Their proximity gave me an idea, as I remembered an old mod by AVStoryteller which had a security training chest. Security has always been one of the harder skills to increase, since you need to find locks to pick. After some trial and error (mostly error!), I was able to rename the chest and attach a script so that its lock automatically resets every time you pick it. Problem solved!
Does anyone else customise mods this way? If so, what do you do?

For sure, lighting...if it is problematic towards game play. On many rigs...even powerful ones...flickering light sources can eat-up a good chunk of the resources. Some mods go wayyy overboard on the lights. Or don't bother to use the ambient light in the cell settings...just adding 3 dozen fast-flickering candles. Probably looked really good on the Hal 9000 used to make the mod.

There is this house mod in FNV that my demented darling re-modded. No lights and a deathclaw installed in the bedroom. Does this count?

Scuse me, I gotta go barf.

The Red Rose Manor is my go-to house mod as well and since Vilja likes it so much, moving is not an option. The only problem I had is the back yard wasn't big enough or flat enough for all our animals. The cows and pigs kept sliding down the hill all the way to the road. I had to go on a round-up every time I came home. Also, too many animals in too small a spot was problematic because it seems the game tries to spread the animals out when it loads and over time they can get spread pretty far. So, I did some major landscape work and fence building. Now the animals are very happy that they can relax and concentrate on eating the flowers. I moved the fast-travel marker to the back yard because I always fast-travel on horseback. It's the perfect place to come home to after a quest, all bloody and sweaty, where all the animals are always happy to see the giver of apples.

Well, I'm only in my fourth Oblivion game but Red Rose is always my "headquarters", I obtain it as soon as possible (lvl 9 this time, though Vilja and I needed all our equipment repaired/recharged by the time we moved in). My only "complaint" is that I don't have a computer which does it justice, must turn off all fireplaces to keep decent frame rates. I'm thinking of increasing the ambient light around the swimming pool, to me it is dark as a dungeon down there; and I refrain from using the spellmaking and enchantment altars until I would normally have access to such in the default game. The only thing which doesn't work is that Vilja will not go swimming in the pool; she will wade in about waist deep then turn around and walk out, then wade back in, then out, in, out, til I exit the pool.

I hadn't noticed that before so I gave it a try and if I go through the Red Rose Manor option and "Why Don't You Relax in the Pool" she does just what you say. If she's in follow mode and I just jump in she follows me anywhere in the pool. The lighting down there is just right for me. I have my general brightness setting set to a little bright outdoors so the indoors isn't too dark. It's a trade-off I tinkered with for a long time and finally settled on a little bright outdoors is fine.

Chambcra - love the "farm" mod to Red Rose Manor. Does that fence also keep wild animals out? Sometimes I go out to check on my pack donkey only to be bounced by a passing troll or spriggan - really annoying!
One thing I'd like to see is more display cases. Even with the Decorator Assistant mod it's not always practical to hang stuff on the walls.

... only to be bounced by a passing troll or spriggan - really annoying!... "There goes the neighborhood." Seems I kill a troll in the back yard about once a week ...then the carcass lays there for nearly a week. BTW, a fence or wall will keep creatures out ...as long as there is no gate in it (so either jump the wall when you want to use the yard or create a back door in the house).

I had a spriggan lying in Chico's stable for days on end. Finally managed to haul it down the slope (they're really hard to move, even with the "Realistic Physics & Force" mod).

Sometimes I go out to check on my pack donkey only to be bounced by a passing troll or spriggan - really annoying! Thanks. I'm not sure about keeping all the wild animals out and my fence doesn't totally enclose the property anyway. When you look at the exterior cell for Red Rose Manor in the CS there is a thing called a leveled creature list. That is what spawns the wild animals in that cell. I removed it and don't get those animals any more. I've since learned I should have disabled it instead to follow proper modding protocol. I thought those animals only show up when you do but my chickens were getting killed and the lambs too. At first I tried a tame spriggan mod to defend the animals and it worked too, somewhat, but sometimes animals accidentally hit each other and get in a fight, like Wolfgang and the spriggan for example. I hate those wild animals attacking you everywhere you go. They are nothing but a PITA, after you've played this game for a couple of years, and it's bothersome to have to slaughter your way through the forest all the time. I made a very simple mod that makes almost all the wild animals run away instead of attack. It basically raises their I.Q. so they have enough sense not to mess with the champion of Cyrodiil. I really enjoy seeing all those annoyances running away now.

... I hate those wild animals attacking you everywhere you go. ... Try "KartPassive_Beasts", it makes all wild animals less aggressive so they only fight if you attack first. This doesn't affect creatures, so spriggans (and their summoned bears), imps, minotaurs, etc. behave normally. The only downside is the few "dungeons" where your main opposition is wolves and bears - you can now safely wander through those with little to no combat. It was a major complaint with Morrowind that you couldn't walk anywhere without every animal in sight attacking you. Not at all realistic. When I first started playing Oblivion one of the first mods I sought was something like the "Passive Healthy Wildlife" mod used in Morrowind (at least Oblivion doesn't have those hated cliff racers).

My solution so far has been to use invisibility spells when travelling just to avoid the hassle. Also, it's fun to sneak up on will-o-the-wisps! They're my pet hate, along with spriggans. Handy trick with the latter - hit them with a custom-made poison, and they'll cast all three of their healing spells almost immediately. Also helps to have a summoned creature to keep that bear off your back.
