After playing with Vilja in Skyrim, I fired up Oblivion for the first time with the intention of playing the original Vilja. We had a little bugginess the other day and she got stuck swimming around after me. (I was going to get creative and claim that I discovered a new "AirSwim Spell," but figured that wouldn't go over with this crowd of experts.)

^ That reminds me of The Starry Night! *checking ears* Yep, still got'em! After playing with Vilja in Skyrim, I fired up Oblivion for the first time with the intention of playing the original Vilja. We had a little bugginess the other day and she got stuck swimming around after me. (I was going to get creative and claim that I discovered a new "AirSwim Spell," but figured that wouldn't go over with this crowd of experts.) AirSwim spell; Arc! Too funny That is not really a little bugginess but a little premature "evacuation" of the water ;D hehehe It has happened to me and I am sure everyone else who has played with Vilja at least once or twice. I could be mistaken as to the cause but I believe it to be the swimming script has not completed. This "lets go swimming"and the "eat dinner at an Inn" or "eat a cozy dinner at home" is a ROLE PLAYING feature that once you start you kinda have to go through the whole thing. You have to let her talk and say certain things before you leave the water. The same thing goes once you ask her out for dinner or ask her to have a cozy evening at home. You can't just start it and after a few minutes leave with her and close an Oblivion gate because the script is still running. My advice is; Do not initiate these role playing aspects of Companion Vilja if you are not in a relaxed mood. Start them, make a pot of coffee, drink a cup and listen to what she says. REMEMBER: You are out on a date with her and have to win her over if you are role playing her with the romance feature on. The swimming is the same deal. Put on a water breathing ring/charm or stay in shallow water and let her talk to you. She has a "swimming only" dialog just like a "eating dinner" dialog. Vilja is alive and should be played as a real person. Go here and read about everything Vilja can do. lovkullen.net/Emma/Vilja_Manual.html or click on my signature of vilja doing alchemy and you will be taken to Emma's Companion Vilja Webste. Hope that helps! -Cheers-

Thanks for the programmer's perspective on that odd swimming experience. Serendipitously, I just finished the first quest the day before yesterday, had read the README admonition about being prepared to spend time engaging (or listening) during a promised dinner or night out, and so I did exactly that. I was rewarded with one very happy virtual companion. Frankly, I think this is one of the best things about Vilja's scripting (which attracted me to the character in Skyrim); the player actually needs to act like a sensitive, kind human being, and is rewarded for being one. Vilja may even be the most civilized contact some people get during the day. I've tried to use the same diligence with her as I do with people I care about, and it seems to work.

Thank you both for the enjoyable explanations of Vilja's behaviour and for the storytelling . When it comes to Vilja's swimming, the "air-swimming" isn't really related to anything else... it happens when you get out of the water and she can not get out of it, i.e. she is stuck. Then she will eventually warp to you, and after the warping, she will appear to be swimming for a little while. If nothing else, it should instantly help to talk to her. There are two ways you can go swimming with Vilja... one is to simply start swimming, she will then put on her swimsuit and tag along. The other way is to suggest that you go swimming (In her "let's just talk for a while" topic). If the circumstances are right - good weather, not in the middle of a city etc - she will be enthusiastic and put on her swimsuit. If you don't bring her to any water soon enough, she will be disappointed and put on her clothes again, telling you that she is freezing. If you go swimming with her, she will be happy and keep her swimsuit on until you leave the water, sometimes maybe also a little longer (depends on how long you have been swimming). So, suggesting that you should go for a swim, or agreeing to go for a swim, will give you disposition points, but promise you will go swimming without doing so will make you lose disposition points. Whereas the "regular swimming" - when you just start swim - doesn't have any particular benefits. Yes, many aspects of Vilja are roleplay aspects - I don't think she is the best companion for the youngest players who might be more used to shooter-games and meatshield companions. She'll probably fit roleplayers and long-term players better - those of us who play a game for a long time and have a wish to make friends also in the gameworld.

I haven't recommended her to my sons, who play RPGs in "Halo mode." I'm an older guy, and my first favorite companion in Skyrim was Mjoll, precisely because (1) I had to wait after I'd met her to even qualify to (2) perform a difficult mission (at level 14, getting Grimsever was really tough) to (3) end up with an upbeat, attractive, chatty companion. Sound familiar? :-) Your Vilja is at an entirely different, much higher level, but is proof that those things for which we work the hardest, we value most. Thank you.

I could be mistaken as to the cause but I believe it to be... Oh well; People often ask me how I was able to achieve my success at such an early age and my reply is always," Cause I'm right 51% of the time." ;D Thanks for the programmer's perspective on that odd swimming experience. Oh gee, I'm the furthest thing away from being a programmer. I can't even program my television remote The thing cost 100 bucks and looks like a spaceship and all I really use is the same 5 buttons; on/off, channel up/down, volume up/down. I have been playing with Vilja for many years and have played through her quest line with many characters. I am not an expert but I think I know her fairly well. I have had similar difficulties with Vilja with different Oblivion set ups. I have a set up for graphics and a set up for game play and one for my Modular Beautiful People/Lovers set up. Unfortunately my PC can't handle these set ups at the same time. I have always had trouble with Vilja at the "Dinner" role play if I never finished the dinner with her. She always wood act strange and say dinner conversation while we were in a cave or somewhere else. I have learned that to avoid this messy behaviour by Vilja I never interrupt the dinner until she says, "I am finished my meal now but if you would like to stay up a little longer..." I tried resetting her AI but for some reason I still recall having problems. Of course it could just be my computer as we all know everyone has different bugs when it comes to Oblivion and their PC. Just for fun you should also try being mean to Vilja as she says some very funny stuff. It is not that difficult to raise her disposition if you have some strawberries in your backpack. This next one is for you Zara.

Those shots are gorgeous! I um, thought I'd share the first page of my small Parody of Destruction series. It's just a small silly ongoing strip about all my main characters (Vailena, Talliesin, Slurps-his-Tea and Zephron) bumbling their way through the Oblivion quests. It opens with the setup of them landing themselves in jail in the first place:
