A friend just gave us her Oblivion disks. She warned us that she could never get them to work. The basic Ob disk says it is 1.2.02something. Then there is the Shivering Isles disk and the Knights of the Nine disk. I downloaded the official Oblivion update patch and the unofficial update patch. The official update patch makes it 1.2.04something. So I install the basic game. Then the Shivering Isles disk. No problem. Then the official update. The Knights of the Nine won't install. Always gives some error code about a file of the same name but different. At this point the game sort of runs but the sound has gargles coming and going. I suppose it needs the unofficial patch? But I have no idea how to install that. Then there is the Unofficial official mods patch and the unofficial shivering isles patch and nothing seems to be working right! Could someone please talk me through this mess? BAIN? BASH? BARF! I also have the OBMM which is about as straight forwards as a cows intestine.
Next help please! Suggest some mod where the characters don't all look like they have been kissing speeding buses. Next help please. A mod that improves the landscape of the place. Lots of flowers and good looking like that Morrwind without the ash mod.

I don't think I'm the one to help you with the installation as it is so long since I installed Oblivion originally. All I did to revive my Oblivion game it was to re-install it from my original disks (the Collector's Edition and Shivering Isles - I don't have Knights of the Nine) and then just paste my archived files on top. I probably did have update patches but any files will have been in my archived game. My copy of Oblivion isn't the Steam edition. I'd be inclined to just install Oblivion and Shivering Isles and leave Knights of the Nine alone for now - it sounds as if it could be a faulty disk. Then install only the official patch. See if the game is running correctly before installing anything else and if it is working, back it up before adding to it. Yes, Bethesda is very good at making ugly NPCs. I see I have these installed: Natural Faces: www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/1965/? Better Male Faces: www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/43777/? Rens Beauty Pack (hairs only): www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/4431/? The landscape is a bit more difficult. I have several of the Unique Landscapes mods installed. Many of these are specific to particular areas only, but some cover a broader area, e.g. Unique Landscapes - Ancient Yews. Then there are ones like Unique Landscapes - The Great Forest - Ancient Redwoods which also adds bears as well as thickening the forest. From memory I'm sure I also had one that added more flowers and grass but I haven't identified it yet. However, there is a compilation that might be worth a look: Natural Environments: www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/2536/? which also affects the weather. Natural Environments Colour Override: www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/5433/? which corrects the yellow colour cast it introduces. Perhaps someone who is more up to date with Oblivion can help some more.

As the old saying goes, if I had a dog as ugly as the emperor -or the character I just made-, I'd shave it's butt and train it to walk backwards.
Shivering Isles didn't get installed right. This isn't a steam thing either. Sound gargles just about all the time.
Affecting the weather wouldn't be bad. I remember about half the time we played it was snowing or raining.
Fixed the sound issue.

There must be dark arts involved in getting Oblivion loaded correctly. And noodles. <-Do NOT add Pepsi to the noodles. Think Mentos and diet Coke. And it tastes TERRIBLE! Ob loaded and patched. Knights of the Pines and Shivering won't work and wreck the main game when I try to install them any of the 476 conventional ways. Some of my olde saveth games work. Some cause CTD. Seems to be random. Found a mod for better looking characters. Ended up with nude Reubens that had been on a diet of 12 fast food restaurants a day for 17 years. Frightening. Couldn't shut the game down fast enough. Eye damage may not be permanent. Am looking longingly at our version of the game that installs in a minute, runs everything and has no problems with the old saved games. Sigh. Blame Dova.

Talking of compilations, as you will see from the screenshots thread it appears I have the Unique Landscapes compilation installed: www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/19370/?That includes the two individual Unique Landscapes mods I mentioned above. As for installing Oblivion, maybe stick to installing the main game for now if that works and see if you can pick up a Shivering Isles disk from somewhere? As for the thought of mixing Pepsi with noodles - barf!

Edit - removed the text of a double-post. The forums are playing up and are very slow this morning.

Ah, I wish I knew for certain, but it is soooo long since I played Oblivion, I can't be certain. However I don't recall any problems.

Sniffles, you can never say never, when it comes to mods and possible issues. There were some issues with Unique landscapes in the early days of the mod, but most, if not all of those have been alleviated in the most up-to-date version. What? You don't like the "Potato faces" of the NPC's in Oblivion. ROFL EDIT: If you can't get the stock game of Oblivion to install and work correctly, there's little sense in worrying about modding it until you do. Getting the UOP's installed and any performance tweaks, stutter removers & crash prevention mods should be first in your priority. It sounds like you may unfortunately have something wrong with both the Nights of the Nine and Shivering Isles that you have. EDIT 2: Pepsi with Noodles?!?! Err... that sounds kind of gross.

There are different patches for different Oblivion versions, language versions and if you are in the states or in europe. You must make sure you have the correct ones or you will have problems with the sound and other things. Uninstall it, install Oblivion, Knights of the Nine, Shivering Isles and then you iinstall the patch that covers all these three.

Oh frak I never thought of that! She brought her software when she moved from Europe, bought more when she visited Australia and downloaded some when here. That certainly explains the horrible mess and nothing working right while my versions all work perfectly. Oblivion installs and works well. Shivering Isles installs but doesn't work and Knights of the Nine doesn't install at all. Probably European, US and Asia all mooshed together. I can say never whenever I want to. I reserve the right to be unrealistic, overbearing and excessively demanding. 2. The landscapes are in and are AWESOME! Love what I've seen of them. Game crashed when I tried to exit. I can live with that. 3. I once knew a man who looked exactly like the Emperor. He drank a case of 16 ounce Coors beer? every day after work and 5 cases over the week end. 4. UOP's? Performance tweaks? Crash Prevention mods? 5. Take a bowl of last nights noodles, put in sauce pan with a little water to reheat. Stare into the bowl while wondering if the dog would eat it or bury it. Out of curiosity, having decided it isn't edible, pour Pepsi over it. ..ooOO*FOAM*OOoo..6. Clean the counter top and go back to bed.

YE GADS! Those Oblivion landscape mods are FANTASTIC! I just strolled from Chorrol to Skingrad and didn't recognize most of the scenery! Love it! Now if my character didn't look like no-so-recent-roadkill...
My other: "Oh god. another year strolling the Colovian highlands while the house slowly destructs around her."

I forgot, UOP's stands for Unofficial Patch's There is one for the main game: www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/5296/?and one for each DLC / expansion, you can look and find those yourself, for any of the DLC you install, just type Unofficial patch in the search box and make sure you pick the correct version.

Thanks much! It's all patched and running very nicely. Got the OBSE amd OBMM. The character overhaul looks horribly complex! Talk me through the install?
