My best choices, one I have chosen as trials and gone back for are, in favourite order: These ones are my usual choices although I sometimes add in a trial one and leave one at home.
Eryniel. a fascinating petite elf. After many adventues bringing her 'brother' along this time it's her 'sister'. So far as a gorilla, sabretooth, wolf, frostbite spider. all in the same day. I think her dialogue is slowly being developing. A real little fireball.
Sofia. Young risque Cheeky young lady, but can be refreshing to chat with. Isn't afraid to give as good as she gets. friend or foe'
Cerwiden. solid, dependable, the 'old lady' of the pack. Attacks Trolls with a kitchen knife after being asked to use healing magics on us from the back.
Of course there's always 'Lydia' dumpy frumpy put upon handmaiden and she resents this(I think)
plus Boss Girl: Vilja. I intend to try Inigo with them, last time I think it was too much for him. After a while he just disappeared. There have been some other interesting ones also but never much dialogue.

Hey, I have not yet looked more closely at Eryniel and Cerwiden. Thanks for the hint! My favourite besides Vilja is Sofia as written already. Love her comments!

Cerwiden, would not be my option if I could find a better Healer.

I didn't take to Sofia because I couldn't see her and Vilja being friends. As I couldn't get rid of the distracting swirling green stuff around Ernyel's feet I didn't keep her for long either. Cerwiden is good, but has been abandoned by the author for some time now, which is a pity because with some additional development I think she would be very good.
Generally, for amusing chatter and singing with Vilja plus general support my favourites are the three main female housecarls (Lydia, Iona and Jordis) and some vanilla-voiced companions, though I do rotate them and usually only have two accompanying Vilja at a time. My long-term basic vanilla-voiced favourites were Junie, Hedi and Angelina. The first two are no longer available on the Nexus. Recently I've been using Danariel Stonebow and Zoya, both made by the same author. Danariel is a useful wood-elf archer and Zoya is a spell-sword. Zoya's original voice wasn't recognised by Vilja but she now has an optional young eager voice which does allow her to chat with Vilja.
Sindra is useful support and very useful if given a bow. She also has the advantage of offering more singing with Vilja, not only via their bard skills but they will often break into duets spontaneously.
If I need a powerful healer, I occasionally take Selene Kate along. She is a really good healer and a good backup fighter too, but I can't say she is a real favourite. She's a spell-sword and her unmodified fighting abilities are overpowered, but you can tone them down and switch off her most powerful abilities via her menu, which I do. She is young eager voiced so she does chat and sing with Vilja. She does say some odd things though and also she does not recognise when she is wearing clothes and some armours and will then accuse you of leaving her naked even when she is fully dressed, so pick her outfits carefully if you change her originals if you don't want to be told off very sharply! The mod is now abandoned.
Inigo is fun and very likeable, but I also like to have a break from him.

Morte! I'm hoping to be able to work with Emma sometime in the future to give Morte the ability to chat with Vilja the way Inigo does. But we'll see. He does chat with a few of the vanilla followers like Lydia and Uthgerd with others planned for future updates (read: when I get around to writing the dialog).

When I assign other followers to follow Vilja most of the spontaneous conversation ceases. When they follow the PC they act as designed. I wish someone could explain this.

Really have to go with Ceri, although I agree with Seyheb regarding her development. I've had Eryniel on my team in the past, but outside of the striking and unusual appearance, she doesn't seem to do anything special (unless I'm missing something, which is entirely possible). I need to look more closely at Sindra, though.

When I assign other followers to follow Vilja most of the spontaneous conversation ceases. When they follow the PC they act as designed. I wish someone could explain this. The conversations should run just as when they are following you. However, if the distance between you and the other follower is too long when he/she is following Vilja, this might cause the scenes not to trigger. Maybe you could check what will happen if you stick really close to both Vilja and the other one? Will the scene then trigger properly? If so, I could change it in the ck, to allow greater distances. As for the original question: My favorite is Inigo, he is a very well thought out character with depth and personality, and I love his comments. Cerwiden is also nice and likeable as a person, although technically there are some difficulties because she was made with earlier versions of Skyrim and SKSE. I think that if the author had continued on developing her, she could have "grown" quite a lot, but unfortunately he left already autumn 2012. I'm planning to try out Interesting NPCs soon, as I have understood that these npcs have more to offer personalitywise than what one finds elsewhere (apart from Inigo, of course). With both male and female followers, I tend to prefere those that I feel I would like if I met them in real life (which automatically exclude some of the female followers that seem to personality- and dialog-wise be totally aimed for a male audience). I haven't looked at Eryniel yet, maybe she is more up my alley. Whereas vanilla followers like Lydia, Jordis, Brelyna, Aela are quite likeable (although rather quiet, at least when Vilja isn't around) I do find Serana find quite annoying. EDIT: OldRPMDaddy, if you are using Hearthfire, you can also have Sindra babysitting your adopted children, and she can bring them along one your travels if you like her to (you have to introduce the kids to Vilja first, though, for technical reasons). If you are married to Vilja, you'll soon have another optional follower avaialbe as well, who is strong as an old oak tree and quite good at wedding dances...

Of the followers I tried before trying Vilja, I liked Cerwiden the best, but I couldn't get her to work correctly with any of the follower mods (EFF, AFT, etc.). Whenever I installed one of those, she would stop healing me, and healing was the main reason I got her. I tried Celestine, but didn't like the fact that she was pretty generic. I did enjoy interacting with Cerwiden, so missed that aspect with Celestine. So right now it's just me and Vilja, and Serana too since I'm running through Dawnguard and have to have her along. But once that's done, I probably won't use Serana, and it will just be the two of us again. Even with the Serana Dialogue Overhaul, I haven't noticed much improvement in Serana, even though she's a bit better than the other vanilla followers. I haven't tried any male followers, so can't speak to them, and from what I read of the description and other player comments (not at this site) I don't think Sofia is a good fit either. Sorry I can't really answer the original question that well. I guess what I'm trying to say is... ...you don't need any other followers!

I would add Arissa and Isabella to the list. Saddly Isabella has been pulled from Nexus and I can't locate a download. Yesterday I did a re-install of Skyrim and didn't think to pull the mod file out of MO before uninstalling everything.

When it comes to a standard follower I still prefer Saadia after having freed her. There are some mods on Nexus that change her looks and make her a follower. You know, someone has to protect her, just in case those killers return...

For me, it has always been Aela or Zora Fairchild (inpc). Zora is a very location/quest aware npc that has been wonderfully voice acted... plus, she is a sweetheart. Emma, Take a good look at Zora when you have time. She is usually ranked in the top 3 on inpc's blog stats. 3dnpc.com/

I haven't looked at Eryniel yet, maybe she is more up my alley. Accepting that Eryniel has a spriggan grandmother accounts for the swirl around her feet. Her familiars(brother or sister) always appear in a different guise. If her dialogue was taken up and developed more I think she would be very good.I like that she isn't intrusive, quiet, gets on with the job and converses with the others. Lydia I really don't like. She epitomizes for me the Male hand wipe, footwipe, autonimic robot hand maiden. Just there do do as she is told.

Regarding the housecarls, whilst all three that I mentioned get an outing with Vilja and me every so often, I prefer Iona the most. She pretends to be tough, but she shows her soft side to Vilja. I like her dialogue with Vilja the best. Although she is set up as a melee character, if you give her a bow and arrows she is a useful archer too. Like Emma, I found Serana quite annoying. It wasn't only her 'personality' but also the way she jigs around all the time and keeps bumping into you and getting in the way. I was quick to leave her behind once I had finished Dawnstar! I once said to someone on another website "Why don't you try Vilja, you'll like her" and he replied "Oh I won't use modded companions, they are always buggy. I'm using Serana because as she is made by Bethesda she will be much better than any modded one." !!!!!!!!!!! Incidentally, I've not experienced problems with the conversations of followers assigned to Vilja.

Seyheb, I think you have upset Sofia,or the Companions have a spy on the forums.saying she wouldn't get along with Vilja. After months of play with her tagging along she has suddenly discarded all her armour.Everytime I look at her, it's off! Absolutely bareassed. Why, I have no idea it's a new one for me.
