This morning, I decided to stop "not doing the main quest" with my current char. To give you an idea how long I've been "not doing the main quest" this char is level 74.
Normally I always have Ingred, Constance and Laura with me, but I only brought Laura with me into the heart chamber. So we go to meet Dagoth Ur, and I plan what I'm going to do, pretty simple...
1) activate door
2) Tell Laura "guard this area" as soon as area loads so she doesn't do something stupid (I lost calvus in another game because he couldn't escape the destruction of the heart)
3) equip my bonemold longbow with CE levitate, float over and destroy heart
4) introduce Laura to Azura
So I do 1 and 2, but before I can do anything else, Laura tries to summon something. As she normally does when she casts a summon, she runs up to Dagoth Ur to do it. Dagoth Ur hasn't even gotten the chance to cast his first spell yet, and he immediately steps back from her. She steps towards him again to do her summon, he steps back, this goes on for 15 seconds, and he falls into the lava, and she then just walks back to her guard spot! Not a single spell ever got cast by anyone, I never even get attacked!
After taking a minute so I can stop laughing, I levitate over to the heart, give it the first blow, and as scripted Dagoth Ur appears behind me. I turn around to amuse myself by hitting him a few times, but Laura shoots a few arrows at him (I don't think she actually hit him), and I guess the AI decides to make him move a bit to dodge, and he promptly falls into the lava again before I can do anything!

Yeay! Now that's the way the game is supposed to be played.
The first time I played Morrowind... I suppose I circled the island several dozen times over a year and a half. Then one day I happened into Balmora. Not sure what I did or why but ... I think I was exploring every house in the city. I go into this one house and this guy starts giving me all sorts of instructions. Got out of there quick. The next day when I was about to start the game I had a brilliant flash. That was the start of the main quest I had forgotten even existed.
I also, after travelling every inch of the Island, got a map of all the locations off the web. Just to make sure I had found every one. Sure enough, there were three places I hadn't found. I scoured the countryside for two or three weeks and nothing. They just weren't there! About a year later when I was actually doing quests I discovered I was supposed to build one of those locations. OH!

The very first time I played, after I had been to Balmora, Caldera, Vivec, etc; I'm in Ald Ruhn and I think to myself "Gee whats that thing that looks like a giant flea...I guess I'll go up the ramp and see if the guy standing next to it can tell me..."
