I've read I should tell Vilja where is "home" (I assume any house I own) but can find nothing in the documentation, threads, nor Vilja's menus on how do do this.
My other issue is getting her to fight. Selecting either weapon preference (bow and arrow or melee) she will stand there doing nothing while I get mauled. Telling her to fight when I fight has the same outcome - she will happily watch me get massacred without lifting a finger to help. Telling her to attack anything that attacks us works, but with an irritating side effect - she will run off to attack some hostile that 1) cannot get to us so is no threat, and 2) she hasn't a clean shot at so will waste all her arrows. (For ecxample, in a dungeon a skeleton fell into a pit while attacking us, Vilja must have wasted half her arrows trying to hit him while I was involved with another batch of miscreants intent on doing me bodily harm; after dispatching them I looked around and Vilja was gone, the skeleton was still running around in the pit. Wherever she went was far enough away that my detect spell (90ft) couldn't find her, I assume she sought a path to that skeleton; she didn't reappear til I exited the dungeon.)

I've read I should tell Vilja where is "home" (I assume any house I own) but can find nothing in the documentation, threads, nor Vilja's menus on how do do this. I think it's in the conversation menus. Try "Travelling together" then "About this place". Unfortunately I don't have a suitable game available to check - my only readily-accessible game appears to be a couple of hours old, having just met Vilja and owning no suitable houses. I encountered something similar, but less severe, during my time as a playtester. As I recall, my problem was that her entry into combat to defend me was triggered by my taking damage, rather than my being attacked. Playing a puny mage, this could be a problem if she didn't intervene until I had been hit a time or two... I normally used Vilja in melee mode - any long range combat was my responsibility, either by magic or bow. From what I recall, I usually used the "avoid combat" fighting strategy. Possibly the solution is to use "avoid fighting" strategy outside dungeons, and switch to a more aggressive strategy inside - I think that worked (mostly) for me. Loriel

You could also try the Vilja resets, the spell and a friendly fight. I've had odd problems of her letting the PC get trashed because she was preoccupied. (During the balked and mangled end of the donkeytail quest, Vilja was in near zero combat mode. She even walked away from a dragon in mid fight. Once the hung DT scripts were cleared she became her usual lean and mean combat machine.

Loriel Well, "avoid fighting" ("Oh, we're going to sneak around", lol) meant she only fought if something directly attacked her, she would still stand and watch me take a beating. Coincidentally I'm also playing a mage, though with light armor skills (recalling how unfriendly Morrowind was to low level mages); but I was level 23 when Vilja was added to the game so she immediately acquired a full set of glass armor, including shield and long sword, and an ebony bow (a day later all would have been sold) ...there's no reason for her to hang back from combat. So far "attack what attacks us" has been the best compromise for me, and I just accept her running off occasionally.

You must be referencing Skyrim (which I'll probably never get to play); I wonder how different is Vilja's scripting between the two sims.

Lol, it's nice to see I'm not the only one doing that.

Perhaps I've deciphered why Vilja isn't fighting for me - she doesn't like mages. As long as I'm only using spells for combat she never evens dons her armor unless she takes collateral damage or is attacked directly, but if I score just one hit with a dagger (the only physical weapon I carry) she immediately joins the fight. Of course a mage is the stereotypical "97lb weakling" so I'm loathe to let opponents get within dagger range (it's carried solely for cutting trip wires on traps).

I believe ( Although I haven't looked at her Oblivion settings for a while ) that you can set her preferred fighting to attack enemies on sight....

That leads to many issues - if outside you will rarely see her as she will run off after every mudcrab, fish, and rat in the land; in a dungeon she will consistently leap up from sneak mode, don her armor, and race off to attack some measly rat, alerting all miscreants in the area of our presence.
Actually I feel the issue is that she does not recognize magic as an attack, either by me on the enemy or vice versa. My non-scientific test has been just trying different tactics in various dungeons; if I use magic exclusively, Vilja never attacks unless she is hit (or she is in "attack on sight" mode), but if I first fire an arrow at our opponent then switch to magic, she will attack.
