Seeking something to break the monotony of those incessant Oblivion Gates I've been reading about numerous popular extensive mods. "Elsweyr the Deserts of Anequina" has been highly recommended on many sites but I've yet to find an active download.
It seems the author had an altercation with TESNexus and removed all her files there; in forums she says it is still available on European sites, but the ones searches turn up either no longer host it or I cannot find it on them (translating an entire page is often fruitless), or the site is dead (PES), or it's "file not found". (FTR, 4-shared may have it but they've become one of those odious sites where the download button just opens a popup where you are instructed to select a social site to involve in the procedure ...not going to happen.)
So, does anyone have a valid link for this mod?

That is an addition to the mod, many of those remain there. The full mod, by "lliana", is over 400meg.

I've never played, or even downloaded, it myself, but I've heard good things about it. I recall similar incidents in the past, when it was withdrawn from public access - whether it comes back again this time I won't predict. Currently the main source appears to be www.theassimilationlab.com/forums/files/file/1070-elsweyr-anequina/ which includes a link to download the meshes and textures, but not the mod itself (presumably the esp). There's a link at the bottom to what appears to be a download of French version, and a vague pointer towards a download of the German version. Last updated in August I think. I do vaguely recall problems with mixing components across languages - sometimes the names of the files/items the mod is trying to find are different. No idea if that applies here, or whether the translation into French/German would make the mod unplayable. Loriel

It is a very good mood. Unfortunately, less mature parts of the TES-audience have over the years had its fun with witch-hunting in particular high-profilic female modders to the point when they just throw in the towel. This is what has happened to Deserts of Anequina - if Iliana had been treated the way she deserved, I am sure her mods would still had been available on Nexus and that she would have kept on modding. Same goes for modders like CanadianIce and Korana, who also got witch-hunted in spite of - or because of - their wonderful, groundbreaking work. However, from what I can see, Deserts of Anequina is still available here: www.theassimilationlab.com/forums/files/file/1070-elsweyr-anequina/ In my download which I just made, the esp is included. It's a wonderful mod, I hope you enjoy it and, if you get any chance, you let Iliana know this.

I had found a link to this site but it was a "file not found" (most likely the files were moved ages ago, nearly everything I've read on this mod is three years old). BTW, is Vilja "aware" of this mod? I had assumed CI and Korana had just tired of the game(s) and moved on, it is infuriating to find they were essentially driven away.

So THAT'S why CI never comes to her own forums anymore.... I often wondered also. The last couple of years I was there she dropped by once. (Too bad she left V.D. in charge of the place; he rules "his" little corner of the internet with a dictatorial fist, refusing any opinions but his own. Perhaps that it is why there is more activity here in a week than there was there in three months.)

No, I think CI eventually just faded away from the community completely. Remember, she started to mod already in fall 2003 if I remember correctly (approx a little more than a year after me ), and she started her current forum in spring 2015. So, it has been a long, long time. As far as I know, she never modded for any other Elder Scrolls-game than Morrowind, although some of her work was converted to Oblivion. In fact, her forum, and in particular the download section for her mods, was her way to create a safe haven within the Elder Scrolls community. She said this quite often and made no secret of it publically (else I would not felt that I could write it here) I did download Elsweyr of Anequine from this site yesterday, right before I posted here, and i was successful. If you can not download the mod today either, let me know and I can forward it to you.

Thanks again; I was able to d/l all the files with no problems. Apparently this is a newer version than was hosted at tesnexus, docs state some of those files are no longer compatible.
"fall 2003" Lol, that's when I started playing also. Had never heard of Morrowind until I got it bundled with a vid card that summer ...no manual, no maps, just a couple of CDs (game and CS) in a jewel case. Didn't even know if it was a game or some system utility, installed it out of curiosity in August ...and was hooked. By comparison I find Oblivion more an fps than an rpg; an arcade style "hack-and-slash" with monotonous plotting, cookie-cutter locations, and lackluster NPCs. Were it not for Vilja there would be little immersion in this game at all.
Are there any other extensive mods such as Elsweyr?

Valenwood Improved is a keeper. That's the province to the west of Elsweyr. www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/22555/?But it needs the patch if you run Elsweyr...which I have...but I see it has been removed from TESNexus. It's about 30mb...

I never do the main quest causing those gates to pop up. They ugly the scenery and are rubber stamped all the same. I've heard others also say they ignored the main quest, or only played it to the point before the gates begin appearing. But this is my first run though the game - learning the controls, what to do, what not to do, what mods I like, etc.; later I will start a "serious" game (and quite probably ignore the main quest, lol). Beyond the fact that the smoking ruins of those gates remain forever (you would think the locals would eventually clean up the mess), or that there are only about a half dozen maps used for dozens of gates, there is no great reward for all that work (beyond, I guess, the glory of the deed). Despite the alleged value of all that daedric equipment, the best merchants in the game only have 1200 gold for bartering, so you often will get no more than a fifth of an item's value (not that money should be an issue, this game throws gold at you as rapidly as did Morrowind); and the sigil stones are not that impressive, usually just a few points above what you could enchant yourself. (I'm reminded of that wondrous Moon and Star Ring in Morrowind. The importance and power of this legendary artifact is pounded into you throughout the early stages of the game, and when you finally enter the cavern and obtain it ...it is a cheesy trinket any enchanter could have created for you for a few gold. I swathed my disappointment in the thought that perhaps this was an intentional comment on life.)
