Complete rebuild/reinstall of Skyrim. All DLCs, all updated patches and the Skyrim update.
Ran TES5 removing all 'identical to master' very carefully, step by step.
Installed Vilja and Solstheim. Again ran TES5. NO other mods installed. Installed the 4.01 patch-ESP.
Ran LOOT and checked the load order. All correct.
Ran Skyrim save cleaner on a save prior to various game crash issues.
Started game with that save. Went and fast traveled to numerous locations and waited a total of 48 hours. Saved and re-ran Save Cleaner.
Went to all locations where I had things saved. Opened all containers with objects in them. Saved and re-ran Save Cleaner.
I noticed Mathis did not have legs. No boots but some sort of shoes and floating in the air. I made another mysave and re-ran save cleaner again. Restarted that new save and Mathis then had the full Wolfcry armor. Saved normally.
Restarted. Mathis was partially armored, gauntlets and helm, the rest his unarmored wardrobe. Again, no boots and no legs. I zapped him with Vilja reset spell and all armor was removed, casual attire.
I gave the PC a full set of Wolfcry heavy armor and did al sorts of swapping around. Everything worked flawlessly.
What is this partly armored issue? This is a sparkling new rebuild and I want everything perfect so could you please give me every possible cause and reason why he didn't have the boots then did have them then partly wearing armor? Is this a Mathis issue, a Vilja mod issue, a saved game issue or the game itself?

I have no idea what video card you are using, but I do know that the latest Nvidia drivers are glitchy with Skyrim. I was having water vanish, textures vanish and all sorts of odd things, including lockups and CTD's.

Maybe chalk another one up to the hunk of dog shit MSI R7 250 video card? So the reset spell forces a redraw of the object reset? That makes sense. I just don't want a whole new build of Skyrim with a load of bad baggage.

Unfortunately since there are no more Skyrim patches, the more modern your system, the worse Skyrim will act.
It actually has been more glitchy since I went to an 8 core quasi state of art computer and Video card.
Thank the Nines I didn't jump to Windows 10. I have read many reports of video nightmares...
If you are considering it, don't...

If you are considering it, don't... Thanks for the warning. Someone gave Squishy a major Win 10 sales pitch and we were/are investigating. If it is even remotely like Win 8 on her pad... shudder. I'm honestly amazed she hasn't shot it by now. Which is more fun, migrating to a new Windows or masturbating with a cheese grater?

Is this a general issue with Mathis or is it only when he is wearing the wolfcry armour? The only time I saw something happen with Mathis like this was when the wolfcry armour was being tested before release. I don't have Mathis in my current (new) game at the moment so I can't check him out, but I thought that had been sorted and I don't recall seeing it happen with the released version.
The latest Nvidia drivers are dated 7th October. I downloaded them but decided to wait before installing them in case of any reported glitches and I'm still using drivers I installed around four or five months ago. My graphics seem stable though I have had a couple of CTDs in the last couple of weeks, but I had far more CTDs before I recently did a mod purge and started a new game. I haven't installed Windows 10 yet and Windows 7 is running fine for me. I have an i7 processor, though it's an early version which is now discontinued.

Mathis is Waiting or relaxing at Lakeview Manor, outside on the balcony. He isn't in follow mode. So let's start with I zap him with the Vilja reset spell and he goes into his casual non armor attire. I am testing mods and have the PC and Vilja out on the balcony as well. As I load a saved game Mathis will be wearing some Heavy Wolfcry armor. Each loading of this test save his armor is somewhat different. Gauntlets most of the time, full armor sometimes, Gauntlets and boots, gauntlets and helm and so on. All at random. When he is wearing ANY piece of that armor but only wearing shoes his lower legs are missing. Regardless of what armor he is wearing the reset spell always returns him to casual non armored attire. I just checked again. Full armor complete. Reset spell returned him to casual. I haven't tried him with any other armor yet.

Just as an FYI: I'm running windows 10 without problems. True, I haven't run into Vilja (Not even been in Whiterun Hold yet), but WIN10 itself isn't much of a problem in regards to Skyrim.
It DOES have other issues, tho.... (none Skyrim related)

I don't have Mathis in my current (new) game at the moment so I can't check him out, but I thought that had been sorted and I don't recall seeing it happen with the released version. Okay, I did a major test. I removed ALL Mathis armor then gave him a full compliment of an assortment of vanilla stuff. - Told him to follow. He did not change into his armor, remaining in casual attire. Took him into a combat encounter and he didn't change to armor. Hit him with the reset spell after the fight and he changed to armor. - Took him to Whiterun and told him to relax. He did not change into casual. Fast traveled away and back and he was still in armor. Hit him with reset spell and he changed to casual. - Had him follow, took him back to Lakeview and told him to relax. Did not change to casual. Fast traveled and returned and he was still in armor. Reset spell and he changed to casual. - Told him to follow. Took him to wilderness. Remained in casual. Went to encounter and he DID change to armor. Returned to Lakeview. Told him to relax. He did not change to casual. Saved game, reloaded, and HE HAD CHANGED to casual. I repeated the above various ways, wilderness, cities, Lakeview, fast travels, encounters. He very rarely changed appropriately. Save and reload sometimes got him to change but unreliably. Reset spell always corrected the issue. - He never had lower legs vanish and partial armor change. That only happens with Heavy Wolfcry armor. Reset spell always corrects the issues. - Otherwise, the game is ultra cleaned and glitch and crash free. Vilja was also a follower during all of the above tests and always changed appropriately. And game health as a whole, the only errant issues are the amazing disappearing reappearing NPCs which I believe is a video card redraw issue. It always catches up eventually.

My primary interest with this is is it unique to Mathis in some way or is it game oriented problem that could manifest with other NPCs/followers? I discount Vilja from this as I have found that if I don't use her wardrobe functions at all she always changes correctly. When she doesn't it has always been a game scripting fault or lag. It is my guess that Mathis is using some of the wardrobe features that are prone to oddities.
However, I would be happy to use my game as a test if you deem this is a Mathis/Vilja mod related issue.

I really don't know the reason for the missing legs. As for the "changing" behaviour, I don't recall that. As mentioned, I don't have Mathis or the Wolfcry Armour in my current game, it isn't far enough forward yet. It's also been a while since I last had Mathis with my party.
