Infamy

To my way of thinking, infamy points are punitive, you should get them for doing things you shouldn't (or at least from getting caught doing such things), not from doing things required by the game (such as default quests). So ... can I safely use 'setpcinfamy 0' periodically while doing the Thieves' Guild quests and keep my character "clean"? Or would there be long term repercussions, such as needing a certain infamy level to advance or to accomplish some task?

If you have KOTN, you needn't muck around with cheats re: infamy. The Pilgrimage quest (repeatable) removes infamy. At TESNexus, I also recall seeing a mod that allowed one to pay gold @ churches to remove infamy. Not sure it's name...
Infamy is important in PC-NPC relations based on the NPC's responsibility...a hidden value. Some NPCs with low responsibility might like you MORE with higher infamy.

If you have KOTN, you needn't muck around with cheats re: infamy. The Pilgrimage quest (repeatable) removes infamy. .... Don't have KOTN, and everything I've read about the Pilgrimage implies it is a boring endeavor, so finish the Thieves Guild then do the Pilgrimage. Which is why I considered periodic use of the console to reset infamy. (Actually I have another version of Oblivion with all the DLC but am trying to decipher if I can install it alongside my current version ...I have found three utilities which purport to manage multiple installs, but all are based on making copies of your current install folder and its folders in My Documents (a pox upon the Micro$oft engineer who devised this "all your eggs in one basket" concept), nothing about having installs of different versions of the game.) I realize my style of playing is in the minority, especially after perusing numerous forums rife with comments from the bloodthirsty hack-and-slash "I want to kill everything in sight" crowd, who even ridicule those who want to role play the game (and, in my opinion, Oblivion IS more of a hack-and-slash fps than a true rpg, though I'm trying to play it as the latter).

so use of "setpcinfamy" will not haunt me at some future time in the game? (I'm quite leery of such "time bombs" in TES games - do something at level five that returns to bite you in the posterior at level twenty.)
