Your hung scripts - corrupted lists horror story.
Game running slow. CTDs. Left Markarth with only Vilja following. A CTD before getting to the river. At the river Vilja pretty much stopped. She wouldn't even follow. Clean clean clean the saved games. Game ran but very slow. Vilja dialogue hung to the same lines. Clean clean. Nope. Restarted Vilja. Used Beata. Still slow. Vilja stopping, not following.
Amgepo to the rescue. Doing a lot of Sherlock Holmes stuff over about 20 hours. Running the old corrupted max saved game. Symptoms other than CTDs (CTDs were from 4GB of very slow memory, a sluggish filled hard drive and virtual drive mismanagement by Windows), I was unable to leave Breezehome. Exit the door and CTD.
Final solution->>>>> The Donkey Tail quest never completed which led to Vilja never getting her spells which led to Vilja never getting called to the Bards College. Those scripts were log jamming everything that followed.
After cleaning all the crud saved game cleaner could. Amgepo talked me through getting Donkey Tail to complete. Got Leifur. Vilja instantly wanted to go to the BC. But still some CTDs and the Breezehome disaster.
Took Vilja to Breezehome. The containers in Breezehome were filled with crap of about a year of playing. Had Vilja empty each container and sell the stuff. The PC being unable to get out the door without CTD. Vilja had to make about 15 trips to the store. The place empty, a cleaned saved game and the PC could exit no problem.
The cause of the entire corrupting besides corrupted lists in Breezehome. Three things.
-Heneri didn't exit Eldergleam Sanctuary properly. A problem in the game at the exit. So she wasn't fully functional when delivered to Hllalu farm.
-Wilbert and PC caught Windpeak Inn-Itis. One or more Wilbert scripts got hung thanks to that little black hole.
-When Heneri took the ingredients from the PC the Briar Heart was flagged a quest item. Heneri took it but didn't take it. All subsequent quests from Heneri were weirded out by this uncompleted script.
The reload of Vilja with the rot still in the wash worked pretty good until rescuing Vilja. Leaving the ship she had no dialogue and just wandered off. Her brain, scripts, were frozen solid.
Final final solution. Reload an old saved game where the PC had a chat with Halvdan. Then made absolutely certain the computer was running right and dedicated all game play to Vilja's quest line. Got Heneri her ingredients faithfully, made certain she acted appropriately upon exiting Eldergleam, made sure she followed the proper scripts, rescued Vilja and had her running right, completed the Donkeytail quest and got Leifur and Vilja got started at the BC (after a few foops at the Windpeak Inn. The way to avoid Windpeak Inn crap is to tell followers to wait outside, enter the inn, approach Karita and turn her AI off. Then proceed normally.).
Ultimate cause of my problem. Wuss computer + game engine. The game engine tries to unload the virtual memory while loading a new cell when you go through a transition doorway or fast travel. It doesn't do a good job. Thus the Breezehome exit bug. With about 45000 items in containers, some with corrupted lists, the game couldn't put things away and load Whiterun. With Heneri exiting Eldergleam there is a spawning point right on the exit cell. That tries to fire as the game loads the cell. With Windpeak Inn there is a half written never used quest line involving Karita (she was supposed to take over the Inn if Thoring died).
