After too much of a hunt about on dusty shelves I've found all my Morrowind and expansion CDs. That was good, - but my biggest worry was that the external hard drive I had all the old Morrowind mods I liked as well as my other Morrowind related files was still in a functional condition. I use laptop hard drives mounted in small hardcases for backing things up, but my old Morrowind stuff was on an old dinosaur of an IDE hard drive mounted into a modded stripped down hardcase with extra cooling holes.
And yes! - it works, - all the files are safe and well! Perhaps it's because I'm working on a Mer-mech chimeria mod at the moment I really noticed that a hard drive feels like it's alive when it's running, - this old slow IDE drive seemed to especially have that quality. Sorry about waking you up unexpectedly old fellow, but I need these files
The file name has XP in it, so that would have to be a while ago. That means that this back up was taken from the old monster of an over clocked P4 I had in a towercase fitted with so many extra cooling fans that it sounded like a jet taking off. And boy everyone of them was pumping out hot air too when I had everything cranked up to the max. Who needed a heater in Winter
Happy days, - modern computers might be more efficient and near silent, - but I do kind of miss those old gaming behemoths that I used to build up for myself back then.
So onto loading up Morrowind. Because I haven't done this for a while I wondering if Morrowind will run on a 64bit Windows 10 machine. If it won't I have a core2 duo powered 3.0Ghz machine with 3 Gigs of RAM and a Nividia Quadtro graphics card running the absolute final version of Windows XP will all updates loaded that I could use. (I don't connect this machine to the internet in case you're wondering about that)
Any advice you can give would be much appreciated.

64 bit will run any 32 bit. Just set compatibility mode if things get fluffy. In this case, XP compatibility would address any issue.

Being a curious creature I went ahead and loaded Morrowind up on my XP machine just to see how it would go. I use this computer to play oldie-but-goodie games that won't run on Windows 10 no matter what I do with the comparability settings.
Nice to see Seyda Neen again (did I just say that!), scummy damp place that it is. Love the smell of chitin armour in the morning......

Thanks to the wonderful mw.mod history website I found so many of the old mods I used to play in my games. I thought they were all gone forever so it's lovely to be able to enjoy them again.
I used to play either as a Bosmer or a Sylph (Dale Stocker's mod), though eventually it was the Sylph race mod which won out and little Niggle the Sylph, my charming and cheeky little thief who was an expert hand to hand fighter and more curious than a cat about everything went all the way to level 52, though somehow never quite managed to complete the main quest.

Fresh off the boat, trying to figure out what that noise was. Wandered the town a couple of days learning the controls. Got killed a dozen times in the local cave, then I was off. I spent the first three months playing the game working my way up the west coast. Didn't discover Balmora until I got over my fear of silt striders on a return to the swamp. Didn't discover the ashlands until 5 or 6 months into playing the game. I'm sure I hold the worlds reecord on getting killed by guar, scamps and of course, cliff racers. (My normal mode of game play is to approach everything and try to be friendly. Reload. Reload. Reload.) If you play Morrowind as I did, walking, (I didn't know the key to run for quite a while which helped me get killed A LOT), the place is VAST! Such an amazing map/grid.

A lot of the re-released golden oldies like the Elder Scrolls Anthology come tweaked and ready to run on modern versions of Windows, that one runs fine on Win 7, even Arena and Daggerfall run, can't say for certain if it runs on Win 10 as I've never bothered installing it on my Win 10 drive, hell, I very rarely even use Win 10, I much prefer using Win 7 on my other drive and have that drive set as the default boot drive.

I'm using my original and much treasured game disks rather than a modern re-release so I wasn't at all certain if they were going to run on Windows 10. I'm such an awful little hoarder as I still have original disks for just about all the games I purchased over a decade ago. It's plain just how much I loved this game though as I purchased a second set of game disks at some time in the past just in case something terrible happened to my originals
I even still have the last Pentium 4 gaming computer I built up. I called it 'the Rat' and it was built into a much bashed around and modded old Compaq tower case. Not long before I started to have problems with chronic illness I rebuilt it into a tidy second hand ACER computer case and as a result it looked a lot more respectable. I spent some time yesterday with the 'Rat' reinstalling Win XP (final Professional version with all updates and service packs) as well as updating all the drivers with the latest ones I could find. Morrowind looks as good as ever it did on the old 'Rat' so let's get on with it.

I was the same Sniffles My first character set off walking and generally explored everything there was to explore. The game map is HUGE, - even out to sea there are places to find, submerged treasure and unexpected adventures to be had. That's why I loved this game so much and I'm strongly thinking of taking a break from Oblivion modding and Oblivion in general to spend some time immersing myself back into Morrowind.
I found a CD I burnt ages ago with most of the mods I used for Morrowind on it. I think some of them aren't on the mw.mod history website so I'll have to check into that later. All the versions of Dale Stocker's Sylph race mod are on the CD, but not a copy of my own 'Niggle the Sylph Companion' mod. I know I did make and keep a copy, but where I put it is another matter entirely .

I first discovered Morrowind in summer '03; it came bundled with a new vid card - 2 CDs in a jewel case, no manual, no map - I wasn't even sure what it was (the packaging looked much like that of some utilities that came with a new mobo), so it rattled around on my desk for a couple of months before curiosity compelled me to install it. And I was hooked.
That install grew and grew, with more and more mods. With each new computer I would reinstall the base game, eventually got the GOTY edition, then copy everything over from the old system. Current install is about 6gig, and have many times that stored on CD and DVD. Rarely play now, simply because, as Thomas Wolfe wrote, "you can't go home again"; but the hundreds of hours wandering Vardenfell with Constance or Laura, and equal time in the CS, are like memories of those endless summers with my childhood best friend.

Morrowind wasn't a love at first glance case for me. Played few minutes, get killed by a kwama forager and after pondering on the experience so far, shelved the game. Weeks later tried again and everything changed. Not my skills though, I get killed by kwama foragers, slaughterfishes, mudcrabs and whichever unfriendly creature I found for a long time, until I realized there was stamina bar that was always depleted when I started a fight because I was always running. Being able to survive encounters made the game even better

My first experience had me using a weapon with which I had low skill, and so never getting a hit. Once I understood that, and got a weapon matching my skills (and training for the ones that were too low), then I found out about running and stamina. Then I found out about slaughterfish. Then cliff-racers.
Then I started to take revenge!

And of course, discovering low level characters in sneak mode apparently make the noise of a herd of rampaging wildebeest.

Recalling my picnic, trying to circle the entire island. Level 2 character, newbie. Left Gnisis working my way up to the coast then east. Splat. Splat. Splat. Splat. Untold saved game reloads, travel 50 feet, quick save, another 50 feet... I saw an island to the north. Figured it couldn't be any worse so I crossed. It was worse. Splat splat splat splat splat.... Went island hopping. Fianlly came to this one island where there was someone who looked sort of friendly. "Hello! I'm..." dead. What is with these people?? Hi!! Splat. I think I tried to make friends with Staada for about a half hour. There was a minor problem. I had been only fast saving. My permanent save was outside of Gnisis 2 gameplay days earlier. My fast save placed me near the shore with two of Staada's monster goons bearing down on me and a few dozen slaughterfish just offshore.

Just reinstalled Morrowind, Tribbing and Bleumoon. Added MGSO, sound and graphics underhaul and better bodies. Naked babe in boots shall once more undertake her quest to circumnavigate Vaardebfloop, armed with a spoon.
