Similar problems. NPCs don't execute functions, expected actions or operations such as quest updates don't happen, and a few hundred thousand similar nerfs.
My gaming partner just did a huge series of tests and found an infallible way of telling if your game has a script log jamb. HOWEVER, this is most evident on our somewhat wussy computer with an I5 3330 processor.
SAVE YOUR GAME. The wrong commands can futz the present game up. ONLY THE PRESENT GAME. DO NOT SAVE AFTER DOING THIS TEST.
The one minute check up: Go into the console, enter a toggle command, leave the console and see if it instantly executes. Suggested console commands are TCL, toggles clipping, TWF, wireframe, TG, turns off grass, TLL, turns off LOD, TS, turns off sky, TT, turns off trees, TWS, turns off water.
If there is lag, delay before executing, or it doesn't execute at all, your game is 'flying on auto-pilot' as she calls it. It is limping along, doing it's best to stay running, but unexecuted scripts have piled up.
If there is lag or no execution, post the problem on this forum board such as Vilja stopped following, and wait for the pros to help untangle your scripts.
Test criteria. On our computer we have about 80 saved games that will stop executing TCL after about 5 to 10 minutes of game play. That is how long it takes for additional scripts on top of the ones in the saved game to back up and log jamb. This has been tested about 200-300 times.
NOTE: This is an early warning test to help you keep track of unexecuted scripts and prevent major problems later. We aren't smart enough to help talk you through clearing the scripts. We leave that to Emma, Amgepo and the crew.
