I'm back. Fresh install of Oblivion (on a blasted laptop ...how can anyone enjoy games on such a contrivance), a few favorite mods, played a character to lvl 10 to check everything, started anew.
I start the irritant of joining the Thieves Guild (with Armand, the OCD moron who only meets in "secret" at midnight behind an abandoned house ...holding a torch that can be seen for half a mile). I'm there, Armand is there, Methedrine is there, but no Amusei; we wait and wait and wait; 5AM, it is getting light and no sign of Amusei ...so I bail and reload. This time it is Armand and Amusei and I but no Methedrine. Wait wait wait, reload. Still no Methedrine, reload again, go looking for her. About 11PM she exits the Floating Boat and just stands there at the bottom of the stairs, for hours. Reloaded several times, always the same - she exits and stands there. I've talked to her, she responds normally, but doesn't budge. I've punched her in the face, she just stands there smiling. I've pushed her into the water, she just treads water, doesn't even try returning to land.
I cannot join the guild until all four of us are there in Armand's little meeting spot, so what to do? (Without resorting to "setstage")

Likely it will properly trigger if they are all in the same place. So, reload and get next to the straggler. Go into console and click on them. Note the code that comes up. Go back over to the meeting place then type..
Prid xxxxxxxx typing in the code you wrote down then hit enter.
then type moveto player then hit return. With everyone in the proper place it should force the script to run..
Edit: This is evidently a common bug fixed by the Unofficial Oblivion Patch... You could give that a shot as well... It also states that you should never try the quest before 1:00 AM... This gives them time to get there...

Thanks, I'll give that a shot. UOP is one of those favorite mods, so already installed. I've never encountered any issues with this quest (other than the annoyance of always meeting Armand at midnight, necessitating hanging around the area all afternoon rather than miss the meeting and have to waste the next afternoon also). FWIW, I never wait at the garden but off to the east where I can see Armand's torch when he arrives, then go to the garden; Amusei and Methedrine are sometimes already there, sometimes one is there, sometimes both come straggling in later, but they always appear within an hour. Spent about an hour perusing the net for a solution before posting here, found numerous threads about Amusei not appearing in later guild quests but nothing about either candidate not showing for the first quest.
While pondering this issue I started a new character and went through this quest with no problems, in fact it was one of those times both Amusei and Methedrine were there before Armand.

Welcome back. Plug in a usb keyboard and mouse. Helps a lot. The mouse is obvious but the keyboard might not occur to some. For print-screen and the arrow keys it really helps.

Actually this old laptop (Inspiron 1720) has a standard keyboard (and a vid card, native resolution - 1920x1200 - is higher than my desktop system; VGA out; 5 USB ports; 1394 socket; SD card slot; etc.). Picked it up at a yard sale a couple of months ago to use while building a new desktop, my old one having eaten its mobo (the last original component in it, lol). Once I installed original drivers (previous owner had replaced Vista with Win7) found there was an option to automatically disable the touchpad when a mouse was plugged in, convenient since with my left hand in the usual WASD position the base of my thumb was on the touchpad and left button.
OTOH I fail to see how a racing sim can be run on a laptop ...unless you like looking at a 17" monitor two feet away ...and stretching your arm around a steering wheel to use the keyboard. I miss my sims. So I spend more time with Vilja.

Actually this old laptop (Inspiron 1720) has a standard keyboard (and a vid card, native resolution - 1920x1200 - is higher than my desktop system Wow, even higher res than my laptop. Thing is, laptops have small screens compared to desktop systems, so the higher res is wasted. Sometimes I'm squinting at my display. Mine is 1600x900 and I'd wish I'd gone for the lower res (something by 768).

Lol, that was my thought when I first installed the correct vid drivers - 1200 res on a 17" screen?! Not only do I often ponder a magnifying glass, but for games and video that's quite a load on a laptop vid card (and of course selecting a lower res, which doesn't look bad on this small screen, means living with constant complaints from windows about resolution not being optimum). I run Oblivion 1440x900 for better fps (and cooler laptop, lol); run a couple of other games even lower res just so I can see what's going on ....and when I exit any of them there's the windows popup whining about resolution.

.... Prid xxxxxxxx typing in the code you wrote down then hit enter. then type moveto player then hit return. With everyone in the proper place it should force the script to run..... That worked ...to a degree. It brought Methedrine to the meeting place, which initiated the first quest ....but she doesn't move from there (normally she sprints away once Armand has stopped talking, now she just stands there). I can complete the quest easily (usually I wait for her to get the diary then steal it from her) but she is an integral part of many later quests so if she remains rooted to the spot that effectively cancels the entire quest line. I may have to bail this character and start fresh. Another oddity: as this was a fresh install I started this character with no mods at all to make sure the base game was working properly. I then started adding mods, including "Kobu's Skip Intro", and, while trying to decipher what happened to Methedrine, started another character. If I load the first character with the Skip Intro mod active it warps her back to the sewer exit and the popups about selecting class, birthsign, etc. Must I now remember to enable/disable this mod depending on which character I load (another incentive to bail the first character).

Well, kept tinkering with Methedrine. Checked her stats thinking perhaps she was burdened (if she was I'd no idea how/why) and all was well except her health was -7 (yes, negative 7 ...how did that happen?). Reset health to an arbitrary 100, she still didn't move, just kept telling me to stay out of the way because she was going to win. Reloaded, and on a whim resurrected her, she fell to the ground, got up, and walked (not ran) off to get the diary. (Her acquisition of that diary must be scripted with a specific time because she did not have time to get it at the pace she was walking.) Quest finished and all seems back to normal.
