Morrowindisgusted, I returneth. A somewhat new game, with a nice selection of companions, a few quests done, and enough resources to do some serious settlement building. Instead of quests all the gameplay so far, almost 5 days according to the saved game, has been oriented towards collecting stuff for construction materials.
The Squish sent me an email and a saved game.
"You can't change the topography but you sure can change the landscaping. A present for you. Just stroll and check out this saved game. Enjoy. Relax."
I open the saved game. The PC is in a thick evergreen forest in a shack. Going outside a herd of radstags are grazing in a meadow surrounded by trees. The forest extends downhill, thinning out a little. I have no idea where I am. Wandering down the hill I eventually come out on a road. It appears to be typical re-landscaped FO 4 to the right so I turn left. On up into the forest with more and more massive autumn trees. I hear gunfire. Looking out to the north the forest gives way to FO 4 generic, Concorde to be precise. Raiders farting up the place.
I went back, on up the hill through the thickest part of the forest, returning to the sunlit glade with the deer. It's fabulous! Beautiful. A perfect spot to build a hideaway little home. Going farther on up the hill the trees part, giving way to the eastern fields of Abernathy farm.
Going into building mode I go part way back into the forest. It obviously extends far beyond the settlement border. It's amazing. An entirely new Commonwealth. And there's no significant hit to the framerate. WOW.
It took me a while, of course, to figure out what she did. The trees are the Mod Springtime Trees, Heavyweight, Optimized added to the Mod Boston Natural Surroundings. There are really only 8 of them. She buried some deep in the ground, and turned them various different ways. Then to forest outside the settlements she just used PlaceAtMe.
I'll be posting screenshots as we get quality and aesthetics nicely foofed and fluffed. I can see FO 4 now taking several years of plinking and just goofing around, eventually re-landscaping the entire map.
PS The Fir Forest surrounding Ten (thousand) Pines Bluff is to die for. Tina De Luca runs the store there looking as sour as ever. Not sure why. She has her own two story house complete with a drug lab. Maybe it's the tree growing up through her shop counter and making it very hard for her to find her bed upstairs. That needs work. Or maybe it's the disaster I did to all the vault suits in the game. Big patches of bare skin everywhere. Ooops. Bodyslide is an unforgiving mistress.
