I'm considering a new start of Skyrim. The basic LE edition. All my mods are at least 3 or more years old. I want Vilja, Inigo, Sophia Falskarr and WHO/WHAT ELSE? Are there newer versions of those three? What other mods do you consider essential? Please keep in mind, wussy compooter here, with weak kidneys.
This is probably going to be my last and final visit to Skyrim and it's going to be a long play. Like all walking and no fast travel. I'd like it to be memorable, not filled to the brim with tweaking, crashing, and babysitting the game or the mods.
Sugggggestions?

If you are going to install everything from scratch, it would be a good moment to start using mod organizer. It let you have different mods or groups of them in different folders, which allow you to have a really tidy up installation.
Besides that, Dynamic animation replacer or DAR is a SKSE plugin that allow the game to use different animation replacements depending on circumstance, which allow some mods dependant on it to rely less on scripts.

My last mod for Skyrim was 'The Forgotten City' liked it a lot, lots of dialogue and different endings depending on how you play it!

You like multiple characters, so I would use Nether's Follower Framework uncapper Honed Metal - This one allows you to ignore smithing if you want for better character development. Ordinator - again better character development (And tested to not mess up Rigmor) Hardly need to mention Skyrim Unofficial Patch
and like amgepo says, Mod Organizer - gives a lot of flexibility to try out stuff
Since I now use Special Edition and use MASS modes, I am otherwise unsure what I would consider essential.

Serana Dialogue Add-On is a small mod that is well worth adding. Interesting NPCs is the best of all quest mods. Two other quest mods that you can't go wrong with are Midwood Isles and Clockwork. All the suggestions are contingent upon how weak your computer is and what it can handle. Avoid any increased resolution texture mods.

I'm working on this. Thanks for the suggestions, and please, PLEASE, keep them coming!?? Could you also rate the mods according to crashness and DB general destruction, along with a rating of how polluted the saved games get? Neither Amgepo nor I wants to go chasing Vilja the Bugged all over the landscape again).

Alternate Start - Live Another Life (Already mentioned) Lucien (Also already mentioned) Works fine with both Vilja and Inigo Song of the Green - is also a good follower mod you probably have not used before. This runs on the vanilla follower system so if you use it also install Nether's Follower Framework (already mentioned) Interesting NPCs is a good addition adds lots of depth to the game. Can cause minor incompatibilities and problems but well worth it. Serana Dialogue Edit - If your going to play the quests, Improve Serana a lot. No compatibility problems I am aware of Total Character Makeover - Good baseline character look upgrade. Ran fine on my potato.
Things that might not be potato friendly Majestic Mountains Blended Roads

AND........ a question! ? I want to take my present Skyrim installation, the folder and all subfolders, and archive it away in the Deep Black Hole on my storage drive(s). Then make a new installation in a new folder in the same location. A nod to the idiocies of Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit(s and pieces), folder and file system inevitable screw ups. Any suggestions or foreseen pitfalls with this dumb idea?

Any suggestions or foreseen pitfalls with this dumb idea? This is basically what I do when upgrading my install. Rename the folder, copy to new folder. (If something goes belly up, I can go back to my old install.) Since Mod Organizer doesn't put stuff in your program folder, it's not as space intensive as it sounds. If you're using Mod Organizer you can even point it to use files from your old install. While i can't promise there isn't some glitch I haven't thought of, it sounds safe to me.

What about Nexus Mod Manager instead of Mod Organizer? I'm only seeing Mod Organizer for SE on Nexus and unsup[ported versions of Legacy. Which?

I always manually install mods, then use LOOT (Load Order Optimizer Tool) That can be used for Skyrim, Fallout 3, FNV and Fallout 4.

I manually installed my mods. So I now have a gigantic mess in a folder along with all sorts of patches, and some or most are outdated. I'd like to have a mod organizing program that can check for updates that actually connects to Nexus. Then I have no idea what patches are the right ones. Mess mess messssssssss. Nertz.

The absolute selling point of mod organizer is having different mods in different folders. I guess using Nexus mod manager has it's advantages over not using it, but you will have mods mixed up as always.
