I just started a new game. I got Vilja as a follower right away. When I was supposed to go to Bleak Falls Barrow (I think), I started to approach the thieves and the game locked up. I even lowered the voice volume all of the way! I have been trying to find out which mod is causing this, but I am having problems narrowing it down. I found one that crashed the game as soon as I escaped Helgen, and I removed it. I was hoping that that was it, but it didn't work. I have over a hundred and I tried to just uncheck about thirty of them at once, but the game wouldn't load. I don't know if Vilja's quests are going to continuously cause me problems or if I can get past the problems and continue. Thanks for your help! I'll see if I can figure out something!
I assume you have a Steam install.
What I did...after the initial install...is make a back-up of the game and just put it into another folder. The master copy...and good test copy. Clever renaming of folders allows multiple installs. Steam looks for the one named 'Skyrim'...so you can have as many as you have space. SkyrimA, SkyrimB...etc.
That way you can experiment with various load orders to get things working right. Break one? No problem...or less problem...lol.
Back in the Oblivion days, I avoided use of 'Bashed Patches' to combine mods. The Construction Kit was the way to go for the picky. By the general looks of Skyrim, I'd be really careful what one auto-combines into any so-called patch. It could fry numerous scripts for all we really know. But that's just my casual observation...I've been lucky as of late re: crashes. My wife plays this way more than me and I'd hear about (loudly) it if I broke her game...AGAIN.
