You've hit on my one real complaint. It is absurd not to know where I am supposed to go, for whom, and why -- I know the old journals could be accused of putting a lot of words the PC's mouth, but it's actually LESS RP to blindly obey a quest arrow for lack of information...no? :-/ Reading this is reminding me of the journal in Fallout 3. Well, actually there is no journal, just a Quests tab. There is not much room for text so the descriptions are all something along the lines of, "Go to Minefield. Optional, bring Moria Brown a landmine." p.s. I have not actually played Skyrim. I've been getting the sense of it from screenshots and the various threads. Same system used in Fallout 3. If you don't remember why are you supposed to do something, the only thing you can do is use internet or reload.

You are quite correct, blockhead, in your description of the journal system. (Man, that sentence sounds so wrong...)

Sorry I've been away from the forums for a while, lots of Things get in the way.

Edit:
Okay, started with the volume too low. Can't seem to boost it in-game. How do I switch on subtitles...
Okay how do I fix the mouse.
Okay, subtitles are on... or are they? No, they are not.
I'm sure I can fix these gripes eventually but it's deflating my enthusiasm.

Having been playing it on the P3 only, I find the game quite visually stunning, but a bit glitchy in many areas. Seems it still suffers from the same thing other ES games did such as collision issues, and some glitches in the character creation area.
I love the terrain, and just like Emma, I got a lump in the throat going to the Shrine of Azura. Even decided to take the woman Aranea there as a companion.
The companions are the only facet of the game that I have a great issue with. I love that they added them, and made it so that we can decide how and where to go with them.
But I have to say very honestly, that in the face of Morrowind mods such as Emma's fare, JAC's Jasmine, and especially Neoptolemus' MCA, they missed a prime opportunity to give us something that would be truly ground breaking. I watched with awe to see the wildlife interact with one another. The cycle of life is indeed alive in Skyrim, from the bees in the trees to the Mammoths and their giant protectors. But to limit the companions to really nothing more than shields/mules/diversions for bandits is rather sad. It makes little sense to script a merchant companion so weakly, since it is clear they wouldn't be taking an axe to a dragon if they're not the type for battle. They missed some great features that the other NPC's seem to share:
Some NPC's drink mead and dance, clapping their hands. Our companions should do this too. Sleep seems to be more of a "I'll watch over you." kind of thing, instead of the sharing of a bed for rest. I love that they eat, and drink, but you should be able to give them victuals and libations to do so, like a gift feature( like the home cooked meal they give you once a day). Emma's Morrowind fare would shop for you and even bring you a gift. Why couldn't this have been done for these? It is clear that they have the ability to carry, locate, and deliver in the scripting and the AI. We should have had the ability to tell our companions during the battles "Go hide!" or "Run home!" Which would have been great. A scrolling menu of children to have would have been great for those that marry their companions. Since they share that dialogue/play/interaction, your child will at least have been interactive. It would have made sense since some of the companions tell you they want a husband and raise a family.
I don't know if any modders will consider making the companions more personable or functional, or even reskin some children to be Mer, but it would be interesting for me. I loved in the game that if I crafted a gold ring, or crafted a gold necklace with gems, once I give it to them, I would see it snapped on. That was a step in the right direction. Just a shame that it doesn't work for clothing save for armor. When cooking in the inns (since I sadly was confronted by Soodia after turning her over to the A'likr for her crimes and she attacked me with her blade), I change into simple boots and tunic. We should have been able to have done that for our companions too, that are not our huscarls or shieldmaidens.
But honestly, in the face of the greatest companion creation ever, "Companion Share", there is no reason that the menu and action system for these companions should be so limiting. It is like they did listen to fans, and yes, were inspired by modders, but in the actual world of it, they didnt learn anything from the modders. At least the ones that have changed Morrowind forever. I was thrilled to see children running about in the game. I was saddened to see that they nearly look all alike save for sex and hair. They could have at least added a few Elven or Beast Children to improve the diversity.
The Kahjiits are wonderful. Finding M'aiq the first time and the other times, was truly a treat, and I will never forget that "M'aiq was once soul trapped...not very pleasant...you should think about that sometime." The caravan of them outside Whiterun was also a treat. Reminded me of many a powwow I was in decades ago.
All in all, the game makes me awestruck with its beauty, and the immersion is incredible. I just wish that they had learned a few things from those that have shown us that companions in our games can be very versatile or engaging.

I have no idea how to make the volume louder (and I really would want to know). For some reasons, you can't configure the game from the main menu. You must load a game or start a new game for that, then press esc and select settings/display, scroll down a little and you'll find the checkboxes for dialog and general subtitles. In order to fix the mouse, you need to edit skyrimprefs.ini (it's not one of the ini files in the folder you have your executable in. Use the windows search option). once you opened skyrimprefs.ini, add the line iPresentInterval=0 , to under the [display] paragraph and change bMouseAcceleration to 0.

By the way, does anyone else think the sound quality of Skyrim is excellent? I thought so the first time I heard it. Of course since the music is toned down for gameplay I didn't realize how good the sound is until I heard this www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3QXl3VxctU&feature=relatedWhen I turn the volume up and subwoofer is blasting, this music is just amazing. The sound is so clean and the music is so deep.

The "master" volume in game was set at max for me to start with, so I ended up quitting, boosting my system volume, then restarting (then quitting, lowering it a little, and restarting =P) I found the Subtitles checkbox fine, it just vexed me that it didn't seem to do anything. Maybe the tutorial phase just doesn't come with them, maybe it realised after I did a reload or something, but eventually I noticed they'd started working. All in all my enthusiasm is bubbling up again now that I can actually play the game and enjoy it =) Edit: On a related note, anyone know how to enable the in-game FPS counter? Searching suggests using an oblivion-style 'tdt (ToggleDebugText)' command, but it doesn't seem to do anything. Oh also I was pleased to find a 'fov' console command, and it apparently remembers your fov settings. Don't see why the default FOV (Sorry Emma, "Field of View") needs to be 65 degrees, very consoleish, but at least I can bump it up to my preferred 90. Edit 2: Scratch that, it only remembers if you've been binging on an hours-long Skyrim session, doesn't remember between sessions. Probably fixable somehow, I dunno.

As you already discovered, changing the FOV in game is only a temporary solution. You need to edit the ini again. Open skyrim.ini (this time is skyrim.ini not skyrimprefs.ini)and under the [general] paragraph, add the line fdefaultfov=90 (well, I use 90, but of course you can use the FOV number you preffer).

Ah, you legend! I did skim the ini files looking for such an option, didn't occur to me that it would require a 'secret' line to be added. 90 is sooo much better on my eyes, I don't want feel like I'm playing the game through binoculars =P I am loving this game. And the crazy thing is, I still haven't gotten around to installing my second graphics card for SLI-enhanced goodness yet; it gave me "Low Quality" settings by default but it's comparable to Oblivion and perfectly playable. Although I should note for anyone else playing on the "Low" preset, it's a really good idea to go to the in-game display settings and bump the NPC view distance up, difficult to fight when people turn invisible only 10m away from you =P -Neko

By now this is not really a first impression but I love this game. It is definitely my favorite RPG. The have most of the things I did not like about Oblivion. I am currently playing it on a very good machine with a Radeon video card. I am overwhelmed by the graphics and the detail that Bethesda put into it. I love the music. Normally I turn the music down or even turn it off but I have the music set at about 50%. I find the music really adds to the drama of the game. The quests and behavior of the NPC;s is dramatically improved that of Oblivion.
I have played Morrowind and Oblivion. People are comparing it to Morrowind but I find it different. For me it stands proudly alone.

I've been playing the game for a while now, and I must admit that that I'm a bit less enthusiastic now than what I was from start. Reason? Well, some of the quests are too "dark" for me - I hate to be forced to do evil things, and to be forced to take a stance when Idon't want to. I'm thinking of some of the daedra quests, that really gives me a lump in the throat. and then the Thieves guild questline, where I feel like a mafia-thug (as opposed to the Oblivion thieves guild story, where I felt like a Robin Hood dealing with corrupt guards and taking money from the rich to give it to the poor). I also find the npc-talking, especially in Solitude, not very well-made. Definitely not on pair with Fallout, not even on pair with Oblivion, where greetings and dialog choices at least made sense. Am I the only one feeling this way?
(Don't get me wrong, it's still a very good game, it's just that I'm not comfortable with the more "evil" quest-lines. And yesterday, the game forced me to do something I really, really hated, so this morning I'm not very fond of it).

I was so uncomfortable with the beginning of the Thieves' Guild questline that I reloaded from an earlier save (especially since I'd already done the favor for the merchant in question). With Oblivion you could at least pick obnoxious/racist people to steal from (cough - Umbaccano - cough), whereas in Skyrim you're bullying the poor people and jerks like the Blackbriers are 'protected'. And don't get me started on the Daedric Quests; some of them made sense (Azura, Malaketh) but Boethia? (SPOILER) - Kill one of your own followers? - even if some of them are idiots? I actually found Molag Bal's quest less objectionable (even though I didn't do it). (/SPOILER) Just a quick question though - what do people think of the various dialects? I was a bit taken aback to hear a Dunmer sound almost Cockney, but the various guards sound pretty good - I laughed the first time I heard "Have you been tending your hounds? You smell like a wet dog." Since I'd just climbed out of a river, I guess so... (Why yes, I am Harbinger of the Companions, why do you ask?)

This time the thieves guild is really not appealing. They didn't steal purses and jewelry, they steal Riften's hopes, dreams and freedom. Should I need to join an evil group, comparing what you can heard from people and the recruiting attempt I would prefer to join the dark brotherhood this time (not that I find those psychos even a little acceptable either). A shame you didn't seem to be able to whip them out.
The problem are not only evil quests, it's the railroading. You speak with someone and suddenly you have a new quest bloating your journal. Sometimes you even didn't need to activate quest givers, they chat to you and you have a new quest in your journal.
There is a thread in Bethsoft forums where some folks are talking about making a mod fixing all railroading in the game. I hope they finally release this.
At this point I only find myself in the hands of an evil quest giver once. In Hircine's quest. I tried to help a poor man with a really horrible problem and just end up with the same horrible curse myself (maybe it was my fault, as I didn't pay enough attention to understand I was supposed to put a cursed ring on my own finger as opposed to just carry it). In the end it wasn't so bad, I only needed to kill in self defence some morons participating willingly in the same sick event I was forced to play, but the jerk could have ask almost anything.

At least the Dark Brotherhood can be outright destroyed in Skyrim.
My Pet Peeve: Having to join Thieves, Companions, Dark brotherhood, and the college of Winterhold (mages) to gain all shouts.
I can take the Mages (who wouldn't like the restoration school (healing) anyways? ), and the DB one can be gained thru destroying the guild but the others?
Companions isn't so bad (only forced to change to werewolf once), but really? WHat's a mage supposed to do? They don't fight with blades (usually)?
