If you know the location of the word walls you can always find them, regardless of if you are running a related quest or not. The related quest just marks the location on your map.

You can't get into 4 places with Wordwalls without joining the College (Saarthal), Joining/Destroying the Dark Brotherhood (DB Sanctuary), Companions (Ysgramor's Tomb), or the Thieves Guild (Snow View Sanctum). They are all KEY locked except the Sactuary, which has a voice code to open.

Really, what's the point of forcing the player to do something they may not want to do in the first place? I suppose it has something to do with it being a greater reward for the player, but it might not be fun for, say, a warrior to join the College of Winterhold just to get a shout.

Everyone goes to Winterhold College at some point. Some go there to join the guild, others only during the main quest.

Yes. But you don't get a shout, you only get one word of power. To be able to complete the shout, you need to go there of course.

A little late for first impressions, even second or third by now. Except I loved it when started up, typical few hiccups with UI. The rest just lovely. As Eirik M'aiq just about floored me with fun when ran into him first day. Same with Ampego everything feels to tightly scripted and pushed on you. Not always a bad thing as I and a friend like that no matter what you end up with more and more, helping you to drive towards things.
However I'd prefer that it was not such a forced choice guild wise, you don't have to do something but it still gets flagged up and often just dropped on you as NPC's seek you out even if playing and built to something antithesis to their goals.
Dialogue I love and have always fought for dialects in games, large portion of postings at Beth was on the subject. Are all great can't say, but the feeling is it is diverse enough and had the work put into it to make it great.
The speech, yes not always focused or relevant, but compare it to Two Worlds 2 where the few ( few ) npc's personally interacted with seemed to talk about a subject and to a person way off from what was going on, it's nicely done.
