I am running round like a headless chicken in Volkihar ruins looking for a courtyard. So I can retrieve the Elder Scroll. I've been up an down stairs, along long dead gallerys, killed one or two daedra and skellies. Tripped down staircases, jumped over rubble, nearly caught myself coming back. After 3.1/2 hrs I'm about ready to leave. The moondial was easy. Obvoiusly I am missing something, I tried twisting sconces, pulling different chains to see if there is a sequence for them. What I have missed Has me stumped now.
So, please a little hint!

If you are at the courtyard go down the spiral staircase inside the moondial. The door should lead you to Volkihar Ruins. If you don't get the staircase the the moondial wasn't set up correctly.

After seeing the moon dial you need to gather it's missing moon phases from around it, when done it will turn and reveal a staircase.

I am running round like a headless chicken in Volkihar ruins looking for a courtyard...The moondial was easy. Rhyls, can you clarify a bit more? If you found and solved the moondial, then you were in the courtyard already. Is it just that your quest log didn't update? Did you talk to Serana before solving the moondial? As Wolf said, if you solved the moondial, then you go down its staircase and continue from there. By the way, I just ran through this section of Dawnguard over the weekend, but I remember from my first time through with another toon a few months ago that the quest log often neglects to tell you to talk to Serana when you need to. It had me confused for a while until I figured that out. This time through it was pretty smooth.

I'm actually inside the ruins, did the moondial easily. Problem now is going round and round inside the ruins. I have tried asking Serana also but she doesn't help really.

If you're past the moondial, then you're not looking for a courtyard, you're looking for a room that's at the top of the castle. Going down the stairwell of the moondial will put you on a path that sees you climbing steadily up inside the castle until you reach a room where there's a hidden door. If you end up in a room that has Vampire Royal Armor sitting on a shelf, that's where you need to be.

ah ah yeah, after the moondial must be the part with the statue gargoyles that are coming to life. There is a place, looks like a small empty fireplace, behind the last gargoyle, has two candles, the right one is fake and a level that opens the door.

I think I remember seeing that armour. Did I pick it up?? there lies the rub. Now I have to go do some checking. Maybe re starting this if I've got the armour.
Thank You.

Room with gargoyles and a fireplace. Serana will tell you there must be a secret entrance somewhere if you haven't given up listening to her drone on endlessly about just up ahead not much further. Turn the candlestick near the fireplace to reveal the door. Forget the armor, or take it. Not the big issue. Turn the candlestick. Enter study. Pay attention to Serana's hints. Read the book. Screw up the game! That is, if you are into charging around banging into stuff you can easily knock certain ingredients about so they can be impossible to find and you will be forced to reload. www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Chasing_Echoes
