She seems to be wearing a shield, but when I look at her gear, there is no shield in her inventory. I give her a two handed weapon, thinking that will clear the shield, but that doesn't work, she just seems to be wearing both. I have reset her via the spell, I have changed her outfits... nothing.
Any ideas?

All I can suggest is that you equip her with a bow and then draw your weapon to get her to equip the bow and see if it goes. Does it only happen when wearing certain outfits? This sounds like a corruption that someone else had with a permanently attached scabbard.

Thanks... yes, I tried all that, and the shield stays on her back no matter what.

You are using a mod that makes npcs carry shields on their backs, right? Well, for this mod there is an exclusion list, and you have to add Vilja to this list as she is not a generic follower.

Emma, in keeping with this thread, how about a mod for the Vilja mod? The REAL Vilya. Let's look at Vilja directly from one of my saved games. 2 one handed swords in sheaths. One two handed sword on her back. 5 bows and 3983 assorted arrows. Then pick axe and firewood axe, all on her back. And a shield of course. Then we have a suitcase with 22 dresses, 3 complete changes of armor and undies. Then her large tent with cooking pot. Better give her a pack horse to follow Bruse. Then of course the extra stuff the PC has asked her to carry and what she wants to carry on her own. 2 extra bows she picked up somewhere, 15 pieces of firewood, 12 assorted dragon parts, 6 large vases and some pots... better design a trailer to be towed behind her pack horse. Then since she has been asking for them, her collection of 84 circlets, along with nearly 100 rings. Rig some display cases on the trailer I guess. And of course, since she's been complaining about it, 8 pairs of shoes, 6 pairs of boots, and an extra supply of undies. Need a portable clothes line with poles. Probably better to rig a wagon and maybe two horses to pull it. Tada! The complete Vilja en regalia!.
(Those mod designers really need to get a grip.)

Not sure how to do that. I am using a groovtama skeleton that is on the XP32 Skeleton page, and I am using Racemenu which works with that ... other than that I have Dual Sheath Redux.
I am not seeing way to exclude Vilja from there. Is there a guide somewhere?

I don't know if they have any guide to how to exclude npcs, it's probably in their mod description as there are other npcs than Vilja that should be excluded.

Yes, add EMCompViljaSkyrim.esp to the blocklist, located in
Skyrim\data\SkyProc Patchers\Dual Sheath Redux\Files\BlockList.txt
Then rerun the DSR patcher.
