I was at Dawnstar with Vilja completing her 'learning of the lute' quest and fast travelled to Solitude without realising she was on her horse but she didn't follow. I can't find her anywhere! I tried resetting her and summoning her but it says 'you can't summon Vilja right now' and I have tried fast travelling to multiple places but no sign of her.

Isn't she inside the inn together with Wilbert? This is where she ought to be at this point, she is not supposed to follow you as she is practicing her lute playing.

No she isn't there! Wilbert is just wandering around outside and no sign of Vilja anywhere!

That sounds like a mod conflict - Wilbert should never wander outside the inn.
If you can, you should revert to an older save before entering the inn during the lute quest. Else, you'll need to use the console to set the quest stage or something - The mod team can help with the correct codes.

To be cut and dried honest here Emma, a major chunk of the Vilja issues would be set aside if there was, at the least, a warning displayed, or better yet, a special autosave, whenever Vilja enters the Windpeak Inn. Ideally, to my mind, a hidden trigger point where her and the PC are about to enter the Inn that causes an autosave to run. (I wouldn't even trust the game autosave as you go through the door, Best is a clean autosave without a loading screen.) Then when these problems arise the player can be told about the autosave and just accept a few minutes gameplay loss and load it. The Eldergleam sanctuary would benefit from a similar save. (As noted elsewhere, Windpeak has 3 partial scripts running. Thoring has an incomplete quest that is hinted at but never implemented, Karita has a pending script to replace Thoring in the event of his demise, and Karita's scripts appear to be faulty. Both NPCs trigger from PC proximity)

You are using Live Another Life, right? It sometimes send npcs wandering out of inns. In order to bring Wilbert back inside, call up the console, click on him so that his ID shows up in the console. Write it down. Go inside the Inn. Open up the console again and type:
PRID <insert-wilberts-ID-here> moveto player
This will bring Wilbert to you.
(brb, have to look for Vilja's ID as I'm not at home and haven't got Skyrim or ck on this laptop)
EDIT: No, I'm sorry, i can not find it right now. Have you got another save where Vilja is still present? Then load this and check her ID. Return to this other save, go into the Dawnstar inn and do the same as with Wilbert.
