The corruption is so bad I can't faster travel or walk to Riverwood without multiple game crashes. Problem traced to the Vilja mod. No issues when it is uninstalled. Problem partially resolved by removing Druknard and his friend from the game using markfordelete. Problem completely resolved when Vilja makes the remark about nice to have a dog and the quest completed thing comes up.
Does anyone want to investigate this issue?

I think Riverwood can be a bit sensitive to access sometimes. I've had CTD on access problems there twice in th epast, one with a WIP candidate of Vilja, which was cured by rebuilding the bsa file, fine details now forgotten, and once completely unconnected with Vilja, solved by removing some mod that I cannot recall the name of now. However I've not heard of any problems with released versions of Vilja at Riverwood. Have you added any new mods recently? I would guess you will have already tried a clean re-boot by now. That sometimes clears glitches caused by memory errors (probably). The other thing you might try is the 'save game cleaner' utility. Backup your save and follow the instructions carefully! I've used it several times now. www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/52363/?I used the utility just this evening because I was testing a preset of Arabella (only to learn more about making and then installing racemenu presets; not because I have an intention of releasing a preset of her, at least not for now) and found that the character from the preset couldn't enter the Bee and Barb whilst the 'original' Arabella could do so without any problems. That cured the problem with the preset character.

I simply disable all autosaves in both games. In FalloutNV, you have CASM which creates separate saves each time you quicksave. No such mod in Skyrim, so I just have to remember to hard save but I have never had the problems in Riverwood you describe. I cannot fast travel there with the Donkytail quest active because the quest marker annoyingly covers up Riverwood on the map so I have to make the quest not active to fast travel there. My sympathies if you end up having to replay anything that requires repeating or extending contacts with Heneri:)

Seyheb, thenryb, your comments and insights are appreciated. As there is no interest in this from the authors I'm bowing out.

If you mean mean me, Amgepo and Wolf, there is not much that we can do about load order issues and corrupt saves. Of course we all know that this problem is not Vilja-related per see; of the many hundred thousands of downloads since november 2012, I'm convinced that someone should have spotted this severe corruption before if it had been caused by an error in the mod. But, like Seyheb says, Riverwood is a very vulnerable spot on the Skyrim map, additionally, load orders and save corruptions can cause problems like those you describe.
If I were you, I would look at which other mods affect Riverwood and look into if a change of load order cured the issue. But, often more than two mods as the cause.

Are you sure it is such a good idea to run the Unofficial Dawnguard Patch and the Unofficial Dragonborn Patch without the parent DLCs active?

Something may be affecting those two NPCs (most probably only one of them), making the crash happen. Probably using the Vilja reset spell on them will fix the problem. Otherwise, go to a distant cell with Vilja, let's say in a different hold and wait for 11 game days.

Otherwise, go to a distant cell with Vilja, let's say in a different hold and wait for 11 game days. markfordelete Druknard, leave cell and re-enter partially fixes. Can then enter and leave Riverwood W/O crashes but game not stable. Crashes every 10 minutes or so. Unticking Vilja mod then visiting other locations for 3 or 4 game days fixes everything. (Walked to Riften, to Whiterun through Riverwood then to Solitude then back to Riften). Are you sure it is such a good idea to run the Unofficial Dawnguard Patch and the Unofficial Dragonborn Patch without the parent DLCs active? Inactive as in haven't visited the initializing locations yet. Should I untick those patches until I have visited the Ft. Dawnguard environs and taken the ship to Solstheim? That sounds a little counter intuitive. What is very odd is Vilja mod and the game was stable and working, able to progress through rescuing her from the ship, able to visit Riverwood, until Vilja mentioned helping Druknard and the Donkeytail quest came up in the journal. In fact we had just walked through Riverwood without problems and was near Falkreath going to see Wilburt at the Bards college to initialize those quests when Vilja mentioned Druknard. We went and got the first bardic chant at Bloated Man's Grotto and since we were in the area went to Riverwood and discovered the crashes. We then reloaded a save from before speaking to Wilburt, near Falkreath (just after Vilja mentioned the cure) heading towards Solitude and walked back to Riverwood to discover we could no longer enter. Game crashed. Reloaded that same save and tried fast travel. Crashed again. Went to Whiterun, fast travel and all was fine. Walked to Western Watch Tower W/O probelms. So tried walking to Riverwood via Meadery. No go again. Once Vilja mentioned the cure, it went fut. Errata: After discovering the crash we methodically went through the game, trying to discover other causes. We unticked all mods, walked Skyrim for a while, did a special save and cleaned it and so on. Everything worked fine except could not enter Riverwood and approach Druknard. Reactivated Eryniel mod. No effect. (In case her proximity to Riverwood was effecting things.) Deactivated her, cleaned save and reactivated Sophia, no effect. Just trying to be methodical. Then most recently, as mentioned in the post to Emma, removed all mods, cleaned save again and so on. So to sum up. The old saved game: Visited Heneri. She was worried about Vilja. Went to Windpeak Inn and spoke to Wilburt. Went after Vilja. (Very memorable mess there. PC, level 41, badly under-equipped and over leveled, dealing with 2 dragons and Halvdan's cohorts armed only with Zephyr improved to epic.) Rescued Vilja and strolled slowly to Whiterun just to get all Vilja's dialogues post rescue. Then restarting, reloading from this old save, cleaned out Breezehome in case that save had it's corrupted lists. Made a special save, ran the save game cleaner, then to celebrate being able to play Skyrim again walked down through Riverwood and Inalta environs doing a photo safari. About 4 or 5 game days wandering the southern area, game stable and running fine. That was when Vilja mentioned helping Druknard. __________________________________________________________________________________________________ Something may be affecting those two NPCs (most probably only one of them), making the crash happen. So I am now reloading the saved game just after Vilja mentioned the cure and the quest went into the journal and am doing exactly as you suggested. I'll report later today what happens. CRAP!! I have to fight my way back through all those crashes to get to Druknard and friend! I suppose to do this correctly I should make another special save then use the reset spell on just one of them to test.

Okay, I'm baffled. Reloaded the saved game where Vilja had just suggested curing Druknard. Fast traveled to Riverwood once without any issue. Then walked there without any problems. Spoke to Druknard and got the quest in the journal. Repeated that twice more. No problems. Then walked away from Druknard and Vilja spoke, "Wouldn't it be nice to talk a little..." Pc replied with 'Please go ahead.' Vilja then talked about generic things, joining the dark brother hood, conversation closed then Vilja again, "Wouldn;t it be nice to talk..." Then again and again for a total of 11 times. I repeated entering Riverwood again, again talked to Druknard and got the quest. Vilja then did the "Wouldn't it be nice to talk..." 9 times in a row." I reloaded the same save at that point. Repeated the above scenario again. Vilja did the 'Wouldn't it be nice' 5 times, then in the course of walking to Lakeview did that convo 6 more times. Huh? I have no idea what is going on. This is a save 10 minutes after the 'primal' save that I cleaned and archived. The save that took over 20 tries to get into Riverwood and talk to Druknard. Could the game itself have been corrupted and cleaned itself up in the 4 hours or so yesterday when it ran flawlessly without any crashes? We did a complete delete and reinstall of Skyrim on the 8th. For the record, we have 13 interim saves during the interval when Riverwood was inaccessible-crashing, until Vilja remarked about nice to have a dog and quest was marked complete. BTW, Leifur never turned up and remains missing. If Vilja continues talking about and to an invisible dog she's going to get abandoned in the half completed Lakeview house and PC is going to go courting various wilderness animals and the Vilja development crew can celebrate the problem resolved.

Probably the problems in your save are not too serious. Just use the Vilja reset spell on her too, as well as on Leifur and for good measure on Riverwood inhabitants and with any character vanilla or modded you are travelling with (it fix NPCs not belonging to this mod too).

Thanks! We didn't think it was anything major. Just stuck. One thing messes with the next and so on. Leifur is still missing. No idea. Maybe when Druknard did his final resolve it was so barely functional Leifur just went missing in the wash? By the way, I've never experienced any problems of any sort with Riverwood. If anybody has and is able to pinpoint a specific problem I'd like to hear about it. If nothing else, to be able to avoid it.

Okay. Hit Druknard with the reset spell. Finished Heneri stuff, returned to Druknard, got conclusion. Hit him with the spell again to make sure then left Riverwood and returned. Druknard and his friend were gone. NOTE! This is the first time they vanished. On all previous occasions they remained forever hanging around Riverwood. Then went into various shops and upon coming out of the traders, Leifur was lying in the middle of the road and we adopted him. HOWEVER, Druknard never asked us to take Leifur. So I'm still a little nervous. Am still waiting for Vilja to give the always wanted a dog quest completion dialogue. Have walked all the way to Markarth.

You can bring them to you this way, keeping in mind that XX means the first two digits you see when you select Vilja in the console: prid XX02876F moveto player prid XX028770 moveto player

When I have done this in the past, the quest has not completed until the offer of the dog has been made and accepted. I am not a fan of animal companions in Bethesda games generally and Skyrim in particular, but could never figure out how to get the quest completed unless I took the dog. What I have done is take the dog and have him accompany me to my player home where I have him wait. At that point, I get a notice that the quest is complete. Vilja will say something about always wanting a dog but I have never connected that comment with being required to complete the quest. It is strange that you were able to adopt the dog without him being offered.
