You have a nice set up. But of course, it's a question of personal preference.
We went the route of collecting ingredients, enchanting, alchemy and smithing. Found a mod that had non body slot armor. At one point Vilja had around 4000 armor rating and the PC packed a 1600 damage bow and blah blah blah.
One day my other got completely fed up. We were playing the game entirely to make improvements. Breezehome was a game crash disaster of corrupted lists, Lakeview was getting that way, and it was entirely alchemy and enchanting centric. She said screw that noise and started playing with PC and Vilja entirely nude with mildly improved generic weapons. She was having much more fun than I was.
So we restarted from a very early save and changed our mode of playing completely. The major challenge was making various attractive outfits with the exact same armor rating and value. That was pretty difficult. Smith just so then enchant just enough to improve the value. We then loaded up Vilja with a very large assortment of attire ensembles and let her decide what to wear. This was much more difficult than going for the highest best possible.
It was delightful that Vilja rejected all the ugly or ultra armor stuff. We did some more testing, more improvements, and ultimately came up with Vilja-esque everything. Removing her preferred attire/armor she chose second sets. Not using her wardrobe mind you. She ended up choosing M'rissi's ensemble as of two days ago, which was weird as that was what I had haphazardly gave her.
Then the PC? Again, what to wear? We tested numerous items until we came up with the most attractive that fit the theme. Native American displaced to Tamriel.
So here we have Vilja, armor rating of a little over 400. M'rissi over 200, and the PC around 120. The weapons of choice are Vilja's beloved Daedric sword. She always chooses it. And dragonbone bows. We have 3 identical, all beefed to 200+. M'rissi didn't like that type of bow and prefers Zephyr. No idea why.
And these are the ensembles of choice from over 2 years of noodling around.
PC in Hircine. Simply can't get better looking than this. M'rissi behind is topless so no frontal picture. It's a foresworn outfit with Wolfcry accessories.
And Vilja adores the semi see through (mod) of the ancient Nordic with Wolfcry. Got to admit with her figure it's very tasty. Over 15 choices of armor and she chose this. (The PC, M'rissi, Aela, Vilja and Lydia all appear to have different bust sizes. We can't figure out how this works. Odd.) It is funny that Vilja chose Spellbreaker over a slightly better armor rating ebony shield. No idea why.
So the funky tank attire is great for people who like that sort of thing, but these three unleashing a rain of arrows is quite formidable against any opponent, level 50, and they do it in style, thoughtfully selected by Vilja.
As a footnote, the PC's face and skin color is the work of about 6 hours of fussing and is pretty close to how my SO looks. My SO loves the PCs legs and refuses to get her footwear until we find attractive boots that boost stamina to replace the ones I accidentally sold.
As an extra footnote. After the game was crashing every 3 minutes or so we went through Breezehome and Lakeview and wiped the respective inventories out. Maybe 200,000 armor rating of armor and tens of thousands damage potential weapons constituting about a year of smithing, alchemy and enchanting. All in some fantastically corrupt lists. We don't miss that crap at all. If someone thinks they have much better this or that equipment, the darling duet of PC and Vilja will be happy to meet them on the battlefield to settle the matter: Bows only at 1000 yards and my SO, hands feet and nose used, on the keyboard. (The F8 key, potions of ultimate healing, is easy to find and poke with your nose.)
