When she is leading whether on foot or riding Bruse, she periodically goes off track, sometimes far enough that I have followed thinking we were on a shortcut. She then stops and returns to the track, either almost at the same place she left or further up.
Also I think she needs a short break before starting off as lead, often when we talk or the lead was interrupted before, say, I want to take charge again she is instantly hotfooting down the road even if we have the horses with us. So I have to go find my horse, Karinda and it could be some way off, charge after Vilja who then comes back for Bruse. So a short break before she moves off again please.
On another note how does the 'romance' develop? She is telling me I'm cute, hopes we are always together forever etc. Is so happy now and all I can say is 'your pretty today' I imagine it grows after we finish the Eldergleam quest which is a problem as I can't find the Illustrated Flora book. As far as I know I've asked every Alchemist for it.
I hope there is going to be more dialogue for Vilja I see that she now puts on a fur hood in the northern snows. Could she also have a cloak? I gave her one but it doesn'tgoon at all.
Other than that, I love the girl even tho' I think she maybe an alky' and I'm stealing sweet rolls from everywhere as there is a shortage in the inns.

The pathfinding issue is something in the vanilla game. The game picks a path but ends up at a dead end and goes back and forth.
Anout the book, a hunch tells me you'll find it in the College library -- ask the orc.

Not sure what is meant by Wotan re 'vanilla game. I am updated to the latest one 1.8.I believe. I have SKSE, Unofficial patch, Use NMM and have a pretty good rig. Vilja is the latest update(now with red hair) At 1.1.1. So perhaps Emma will be able to tell me the problem,I have only mentioned the walking aside because I haven't seen it anywhere else. If maybe it's 'just one of those things' we have to accept that's ok.

You may have a good rig, the last update and all the unofficial aids, but the problem is the same, there are areas poorly navmeshed. We may find a way around, but it's not something granted.

Yeah, it's the inbuilt navigation system that's the problem. Your destination may lie on the other side of a mountain, and the game will try to find the shortest route. It may try to lead you over the mountain. Or it could tell you to head up a road, only to tell you to go back the way you came moments later, then tell you to go back the same road again -- an endless loop. The problem is that the nav. system lacks the necessary detail to plot a route correctly -- you're only shown your position and a direction to go, whereas you really should be shown a fully plotted route along the existing roads and paths.

What a superb explanation wotan. *thumbs way up* Thank You! I was going to recommend changing her hair back to blonde and see what happens ;D This also happens with Oblivion Vilja. The other day she lead me across the Imperial bridge and then fell into the water; got stuck; I teleported her out and she lead me back across the bridge then turned around; went back across the bridge and fell into the water again hehehe I hope this doesn't turn people off from letting her lead because it doesn't happen all the time but it can be frustrating when it does. I have learned to recognize when she gets stuck in this loop. Vilja has lead me do the Dive Rock Mountain Monster and that is when I fell in love with her. Thank you wotan for confirming my assumptions. I always woundered what was with that. I always assumed it had to do with "path grids" that were predetermined by the game itself. I also assumed that is why the creators of House mods or Landscape mods always wrote in the description that the space has been correctly path gridded. (Edit:This is why you may see NPCs walking into walls in a modified landscape area or home or space. Of course from what I have just learned it can happen anywhere because the vanilla game is poorly navmeshed (path grid) in some areas to start with.) I always wanted an "AUTO FOLLOW" feature that would go into affect when engaging the "Side by Side" walking. Of course it is for purely selfish reasons. It would save some battery charde on my cordless mouse and would allow me to drink my coffee and eat my chocolate cookies while looking at the beautiful landscape and enjoying Vilja's chatter. Of course it would also have to have a feature that would prevent animals and enemies attacking. I still think changing her hair back to blonde would cure the problem but that's just the purist in me Edit: What I do in Oblivion to solve this is teleport her back to me, then I lead for a little bit and then lead her try leading again and see if she chooses a different path. I am not sure about Skyrim Vilja but in Oblivion Vilja you can ask her to show you on your map where she is going so if she gets stuck in this "LOOP" wotan described then you can lead in the right direction for a little bit and then let her take over when you are closer to the destination. I have watched Vilja try to climb a mountain straight up on her horse so I totally get where you're coming from
