The Arch-Mage will not recognize I have the Necromancer's Amulet in inventory. It IS there ...unfortunately there are two of them, which apparently is confusing our poor old Arch-Mage. Searching online I find this is a rare but not unknown glitch; an eight year old post on Yahoo Answers was advised to reload an older save (not an option for me, I lugged the Amulet(s) around several days before before visiting the Arch-Mage, the oldest save I have contains two amulets); the only other mention was on a generic game site, where the thread was hijacked before any solution was offered.
Since both copies are considered essential I cannot drop one and return the other to the Arch-Mage. So I assume my only option is to use the console and "cheat" to finish the quest (setstage mg16amulet 100). Will this have any negative effects on my game? Will I be rid of one or both amulets? Is there a better alternative?

You could make a small mod that removes the essential tag from the amulets. That ought to allow you to drop them after some save cleaning. you could disable your small mod clean your save again, then you could try picking up one of the amulets, and try talking to the guy. If that one didn't work reload your save, and pick up the other, and go talk to the guy. If that still does not fix your problem you at least have the amulets out of your inventory. and using the console to set quest stage 100 wouldn't leave you stuck carrying them around for the rest of the game.

I got duplicate amulets once and used the console to remove one of them. I do not consider that cheating and it had no adverse consequences on my game.

Couldn't find the command for removing items from inventory so just terminated the quest; UHS divulged you get nothing from the Arch-Mage, he just removes the amulet and sends you downstairs for another advancement (advancement comes hot and heavy in the Mage's Guild - finish a quest, get an advancement, finish another quest, get another advancement). Well, oddly, he did not remove an amulet, I still have two, but I was able to put both in a chest in Rose Manor so apparently I'm where I would be had everything proceeded normally.
