Have you ever witnessed one of your companions getting into a fight with somebody for no apparent reason? Had that happen in the Skingrad Mages' Guild, but couldn't figure out what caused it. Wish I had a "What the hell happened" dialogue choice. Using CM Companions, by the way.

I read somewhere that some NPCs have a low "responsibility" value, and other NPCs are less likely to react well to them? City-Swimmer being killed for minor thefts was the example given - but I haven't really done much with Oblivion AI so I don't know the details myself.

Oh yes it happens. For various reasons, depending on situation and the companion's stats. If their confidence is set too high, they can easily decide to act God of Revenge. For instance, a companion with high responsibility might get upset by the presence of a shady thief-character with low responsibility. There are various mods that throws spells at player and companions. These spells might be harmless but can still be considered as an act of hostility by the companion. Even if no npc has casted the spell (it could be casted when player enter a new cell) the companion might decide to clear out the area, just in case... I could probably write a long story about this, including when Vilja, waving an axe, chased a poor packhorse all over Cyrodiil just because the player was slightly injured and raised a weapon. Or when Neeshka decided to wipe out the deer population... Oh dear... Worst scenario is a companion with high confidence and high responsibility - this companion might attack you or your other companions if you commit a crime or even accidentally hit someone.

Eeep, that sounds scary. Oddly enough, Vilja has always been well behaved with me. I'm the one who's always accidentally attacking people and injuring horses, etc. I blame my terrible combat FPS.
