Neko's original post: Morrowind has lots of dialogue, which is nice, but when creating it all, Bethesda didn't account for companion npcs (who didn't exist at the time, so we can't hold it against them really). Companions are tricky, because they can move from cell to cell, and there are situations where dialogue intended for other npcs shows up in the mouth of your companion.
In this thread, we can hopefully build up a list of some of the common unfiltered global dialogue problems that companion modders run into - giving new companion creators a head start when writing new dialogue for their own companion.
NoLore The first step you may want to take is adding a 'short nolore' variable to your companion - this will filter out most of the random dialogue telling the player what Morrowind is and so on - unless you want it to. You can use the scriptlet Code:
Set nolore to 1
to temporarily allow your companion to ramble on at length about scrib jerky, if you want, and reset it to 0 to turn this off. Sadly, not all the dialogue supplied by Morrowind is filtered for "Not Local NoLore == 0", so even with NoLore, some things still show up.
Tower of Tel Fyr, Hall of Fyr Should you kill any of the Tel Fyr residents, there's a Greeting 1 dialogue that shows up, accusing you of "killing one of us". Clearly no-one expected you would be bringing any friends inside Tel Fyr. This is a good example of well-meaning dialogue filtered for a cell making companion dialogue mess up. Thanks to KSG for finding this one.
Who's there? Goodbye! This entry in Greeting 1 can show up if you try to set up a "telepathy amulet" - since the companion is so far away, he/she can't detect you, and this greeting can show up. Unfortunately, it's got a "Goodbye" script result, which can make it impossible to talk to your companion (if NoLore isn't active)

The easy way to ensure a companion never uses an in-game greeting is to put their catch-all greeting higher than the Tribunal/Bloodmoon greetings in Section 1. But they can still get modded greetings if another mod adds unfiltered greetings higher up.
Why couldn't the Beth guys nolore everything? Wah... Common topics they forgot to nolore include:
-little advice -latest rumors -morrowind lore -solstheim -almalexia (after tribunal) -often the name of a town, when in that town, e.g. Pelagiad when in Pelagiad -all the topics in Holamayan. So annoying - but mainly for me, since Julan goes with you to Holamayan as part of the quest. Less of an issue for others who might not.
Other issues - Services like Repair won't work in vampire bases, if you're not a vampire. The vampire service refusals kick in - "We won't serve you yet, fledgeling" - aaagh! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Comment by KSG: Found another one, in that Bloodmoon quest where you have to take either of two officers into a smugglers' cave. Once you've killed the last smuggler and got the journal entry, companions will greet with "I've nothing to say to you" and you get a red goodbye. Gandrung Caverns, isn't it? It's a *very annoying* gaffe on Bethesda's part. So I made a quick little addition to my artifact that goes through dialogue (in this case, all the MW+TB+BM dialogue I exported earlier), and prints out anything that is in Topic or Greeting sections doesn't have an npc id and doesn't have an npc race filter and doesn't have an npc class filter and doesn't have an npc faction filter and doesn't have any Conditions using Local or Not Local
Which is pretty much all of the kinds of dialogue that can potentially affect companions.
Now, some will slip through this net, like Race-based dialogue, but as a companion maker I'm pretty sure you thought about that already; and I always end up using a custom companion Class, so that's OK. Local and Not Local is because there's plenty of nice "NoLore" dialogue checks in Morrowind (less so in TB & BM... ) There could be some "false positives" as well, perhaps some unfiltered dialogue Choice responses, that are a result of a question which is properly filtered; you shouldn't have to worry about those. But I think this makes a pretty decent list of things to check, if you want to check this kind of thing.
The list is pretty long, with all the lines of dialogue. Probably too long to post in a single message; So I'll just post the list of topic headings for now. I'll see if I can format the complete list a bit nicer so I can post it up here - I think some might benefit from it.

After Greeting 6 it gets a little messy. You should have put some generic greetings in for your companion past this point, as a "catch-all"...
And that's the end of my list! Hope someone finds it useful when developing their companions. I've left out Persuasion and Voice because they're pretty much all generic dialogue not filtered for any one npc, if you want to override that stuff, all I can say is good luck
