Happy New Year Everybody! Okay, so now that I'm ready to buy my copy of Skyrim, I find myself in a small dilemma that folks here might be able to help me with. I've noticed that in addition to the main game, the Dawnguard and Hearthfire add-ons are also available. On top of that, another add-on is scheduled to come out for PC quite soon. I guess my questions are as follows: - Do you think Bethesda will come out with a comprehensive package of Skyrim plus the add-ons anytime soon? Would it be wise to wait for it? - Am I better off buying a physical disk, or is it okay to purchase the download of the games? Thanks!

I'll just answer to the second question, as I don't know for the first one. It's ok to buy it online. Why ? Just because even if you've a physical support you'll need Steam. I think there not much to add.

If you buy it from Steam, chances are you can get the 2 DLC's included in a package deal for a lower price than a retailer will sell all for. And, while the third DLC is on it's way, you'd still be too busy with what you've already bought to worry about if you're missing out on the newest dlc... ;D Of course, I'd also wait for a few patches and fixes first before I'd buy the third; if you know Bethesda, there's always some sort of bug or scripting error that would make the DLC a pain in the backside to play until its fixed. Especially on the PC version. On another note, you might want to check out a few mods on the Skyrim Nexus site after you install the game. There might be some unofficial patches and game enhancers/fixes that would smooth out your gameplay. Be sure to find mods that have been updated to include the DLCs that are out now, so you won't add to problems you might encounter, like FPS drops and weird graphic issues (plus check to see if you have the latest drivers for your PC, as well; solves a lot of headaches later on). Dang, I run on so.... . Sorry. Hope my ramblings help. Kkorival

Dawnguard and Hearthfire were 33% off when I looked yesterday. I guess that goes for the base game as well. Might be a good time to buy right now.

Folks, thanks for the help! Following your advice (and that of my eldest daughter, who thinks I'm kind of old-fashioned), I wound up buying Skyrim plus the two DLCs on Steam. Of course, now that I've got it, the questions will really start coming!

Just go get it OldRPMDaddy and open up a LOT of time to be awed by the scenery. Go register at Skyrim Nexus as well and download a bunch of mods and be even more awed. Oh and just to avoid headaches with the UI, go download SkyrimUI. It works quite well though I still have the habit of accidentally taking everything out of my chest at home and becoming weighed down immensely. If you plan to use any of the NPC companions, there is a good companion mod that makes it quite enjoyable. Of course you can always just download Vilja and get blown away. I have not yet enjoyed the company of Vilja but that is definitely on my list of things to do. For the moment, I had to uninstall Skyrim again just to stop playing.

Okay, so now I've been playing off and on for a few days, and it's possibly the most visually stunning game I've ever seen. Except for the CTDs, which are frequent and baffling. Is there a patch or something that deals with crashes? Looking around on message boards, I see lots of speculation, but they seem to happen for lots of reasons.

As far as updates and patches, since the game is one Steam, the game automatically updates to the latest versions, updates and official patches from Bethesda. As for crashes, I am not sure. I once did some install after uninstalling the game (to take a break from constantly playing it) and it crashed everywhere (going into Dragonreach, going north of Morthal, etc). I uninstalled both Skyrim and Steam and reinstalled (which takes forever by the way, even with the DVD) and this fixed things. The only thing is that Lydia looked different than before. Probably due to having to reload my mods and I probably reloaded the various face mods in different order (I use 4 face mods, Envision, Eyes of Beauty, Envision for NPCs, and Geanox).
