I'm having an issue finding Vilja after speaking to Wilfred. He tells me that Halvard and his thugs have gone after her, and when I rush out to find her, the quest icon points to a spot midway between Mzinchaleft and Windward Ruins. However, about a hundred feet before I reach that spot, the icon changes to a spot immediately south of my current location, and does not change until I reach Bleakwind Basin, where it hovers about a patch of empty grassland. If I fast travel after the quest icon changes location, it vanishes, and I am left unsure of what to do or where to go, as the original quest icon (near Dawnstar) has nothing there. I would love to continue this questline and advance my adventures with Vilja, but this bug (at least I think it's a bug) is stopping me in my tracks. Any help would be appreciated.

We have had a few reports (5-8) on this happening. The reports didn't start when we updated to ver 1.4, instead they started some weeks earlier, approx at the time of the release of Dragonborn. However, most people have no problem, and we don't know what is causing this. One guy reported that it was sorted if he told Cerwiden to wait, but that doesn't sound like a reasonable cause to me.
Yesterday, it happened to one of our testers. And he confirms that the following "fix" normally works:
The 'fix' is to walk out until the marker jumps, then indeed go back, talk to wilbert, and leave. The marker will be back properly, and will not jump again.

I'm afraid that did not work. The quest icon is completely vanishing when I go inside to speak to Wilfred, and it's resetting to the southern location every time after I speak to him.

I also attempted reloading a previous save, from just before Vilja requested a dragon bone. I progressed to the same point in the quest, and the bug happened again. And, unfortunately, the fix did not work this time, either.
On the upside, some Thalmor showed up where the original quest marker was, so I got to take out my frustration on them.

I wonder if the original questmarker vanished *because* of the Thalmor guys? What were they doing there? Were they questrelated in any way?
If you kill them, will Vilja's questguys reappear?
I'm very eager to sort this out; I don't know why this has started to happen, only that I think I got the first reports approx when Dragonborn was released - have you got Dragonborn running?
I'm working on a small update on Vilja now, and I have then given these baddies a package so that if they aer too far away from this location where they ought to be, they should walk back there and then wander there. I hope this will help, but as I don't know the cause, it's really guessing...
Oh... are you using ver 1.4 of Vilja?

No, the Thalmor were just random NPCs. They only appeared once out of the dozen or more times I tried to go there, and killing them did nothing to reset the marker. And yes, I am using version 1.4, and I do have Dragonborn running. I really appreciate the effort you're putting into resolving this problem.

Is it possible that the script is not initiating properly when I reach the area where the thugs are waiting? I was going to try moveto commands to teleport me to Halvard, but I do not know his character code. If I did that, I could see where he and his thugs are, and if they even exist in the gameworld.

No, forget about scripts initiated when you reach the area, and forget about teleporting to Halvard. I shouldn't say what is supposed to happen there, but it doesn't work the way you suggest. It's a matter of dialog script fragments (which is why you should be able to restart it when talking to Wilbert) and packages.
I'm thinking that this must at the bottom line be another mod - possibly Dragonborn - interfering, and that's why I'm hoping that if nothing else helps, the additonal packages I'm giving these guys now should help. But I think it's not only Dragonborn, because then I should have more reports... I wonder, could you possibly post your mod list?
Oh... have you tried doing a TCL in the console when you are at that area? Maybe the badguys are hidden below the surface and that's why you can not see them?
It's so weird that they appear to be there until you reach the place, and then they are gone...
One of our testers had the same problem as you two days ago, but for him it was enough to again talk to Wilbert, then everything worked properly.

I was just putting ideas out as for possible solutions. I could try doing TCL at the giant camp to see if they're underground there.

Oh, and I don't know if I mentioned this, but if I fast travel or rest or enter a new cell after the quest icon jumps, it vanishes entirely.

Thank you I *think* I have done something that will cure this problem, but as I don't have it in my game, I can not know for sure. Would you care to test? The files - a new esp and 2 scripts - are enclosed with this post. In order to do so, you have to know where your skyrim folder is located, and you have to add two scripts to your scripts folder. Do you know how to do this? Ingame, you have to talk to Wilbert again before you do anything else. IMPORTANT: if you try this out, before you update Vilja to a new version (i.e. when we release a new version), you will have to remove the two scripts from your scriptfolder! And, please, if you try, please report the outcome to me, because I need to know if I'm on the right track in troubleshooting. Attachments:

I am having the exact same issue, twice now. I'm running 1.4.01 also (just downloaded from Nexus two days ago I think). I only have Hearthfire DLC installed and about 15 other light mods. Help me save Vilja! :-)

Geriatricus, do you know where to find the scripts for Skyrim? If so, please try the potential fix I added in the post before yours. It would be really good for me to know if it works. I really had thought it was the Dragonbord DLC, as the problems started at that time. Obviously it isn't...
