Okay I have minor issues with Vilja that I am not sure whether it is the mod or Bethesda's coding so I just figured I'd bring them up.
1) Vilja always tries to use a sword even when I set her to archer in her config settings. I can fix this by not letting her have a non-ranged weapon in her inventory but it would be nice for her to be able to switch to sword and board when she is engaged by melee fighters. I figure this is a Bethesda hard coded behavior but just wanted to bring it up.
2) Vilja constantly chatters when I am sneaking. While I love Vilja's chatter it is distracting when trying trying to listen for footsteps, etc when trying to sneak. I tried setting the option for he not to talk while my weapon was drawn but that didn't work. Not sure if the is just a need for more scripting work or a Bethesda issue.
Not saying that either of these are game breakers, just VERY MINOR peeves. Overall, love the mod.

I believe followers will use the weapon that deals the most damage, based on the base damage and their skill. If you want Vilja to act like an archer, you need to make sure she deals more damage with the bow than with meleee weapons. She also needs a steady supply of arrows, of course.

She still tends to prefer a steel sword over an enchanted dragonbone bow with db arrows. Maybe it is a glitch in my game caused by a conflict with another mod...

Ah. It's a known thing that followers prefer to use non-enchanted stuff over enchanted stuff. It's a problem that must be hard coded in the game.

Try giving her a non-enchanted bow with standard arrows instead, like Wotan says. And in particular, give her a Skyrim vanilla bow with arrows rather than a modded weapon. (Mods are "layers". In some ways "layers" are not aware of each other. Vilja should use modded weapons, but it may be that she "prefers" vanilla ones, so a vanilla steel sword might also win over a super-over-powered daedric twohand sword).
As for Vilja not keeping quiet when you are sneaking... I wonder, are you 200 % sure that you are using the right *bsa* for Vilja? Someone else said something similar and it turned out that he was in fact using the old bsa...
If this is not the problem, then it has to be a conflict with something.

I think I figured out what the problem is with the weapons. Followers use my base damage with a weapon not the actual base damage of the weapon. So in my case where I have an 85 one-handed skill with all the available perks and an archery skill of 14 with no perks, even a steel sword has a higher base damage than a dragonbone bow. I cheated and upped my archery skill and perks and she was perfectly happy to use the enchanted bow over even an unenchanted ebony sword. So I reset back and gave her a weapon that was lower on my base scale and she is working fine.
I will check the .bsa version on her and/or disable some mods and let you know about the chatter.

Uhm... her skills are her own. They only match your level, but not your skills. So it shouldn't matter at all how much you manipulate your own skills

okay then I guess I have screwed up some thing with one of my other mods. I'll download the new .bsa's and will make sure that Vilja is the lowest point in my load order to make sure she overwrites anything else.

Ah-ha, problem found and fixed. ;D I had originally installed Vilja ver 1.4.1 and had then installed the extra needed files. Somewhere along the way NMM updated Vilja to 1.4.1.1 and I still had the extra files installed on top. When I cleaned that up everything is working normally now. She used the bow properly over the ebony sword and she switched between the two properly when she kicked my ass in a duel. I also tried sneaking for about 10 mins and she was very well behaved, she would occasionally whisper something but it wasn't the constant chatter. So she is fixed and back to her normal self, ready to kick ass and take names. edit: guess I'll have to fix NMM so it doesn't auto update somehow... edit: okay it is under settings, general, options...

I don't want to point it out too strongly on the Nexus boards, in case it would cause harsh feelings, but... Although it is probably working well for smaller mods, NMM manager hasn't got the capacity to handle mods of larger file size. It runs out of memory and the installation gets corrupt. I STRONGLY recommend people to learn to install mods manually. For mods that is basically only an esp and a bsa, a manual instal is a minimal effort and you KNOW what is happening with your game. You are in control, not the mod manager. In Vilja's case, simply drop the esp, the bsa and the little folder with 4 loose script files in your Stem/SteamApps/Common/Skyrim/Data folder. That's all you have to do. To install these kind of mods, you don't need a mod manager more than what you need and electrical teaspoon. I would love to simply hit the "disable mod manager"-button for Vilja, but I know how upset it would make people (have tried it ) And I'm very glad you sorted out the problems - Vilja is after all at her best when she is performing as intended.

I don't use NMM, so I wouldn't have thought of that one.
