Just done the quest about getting a lute for Vilja. Ever since I rejoined her after acquiring the book on lute-playing from Sindra, Vilja has been behaving oddly. Basically, she seems to want to keep her distance. If I stop after moving, I turn around to look where she is and she's running away, but will stop after a short while. I can go up to her and talk to her and she'll interact entirely normally. If I start moving she doesn't necessarily follow, but I've heard sounds as if she's warping herself while out of sight to my location (the sounds of someone nearby landing on their feet). When I stop moving, she's back to running away again.
I've tried resetting her, telling her she can stay close, etc. Nothing seems to change this behaviour.
Has anyone else seen anything like this? I'm using 1.4.01.

The current version is 1.4.1.1...
Anyway, I don't think I have heard anyone mention this problem before. Try ask her to play an instrument for you and see if she behaves better afterwards. You could also try to tell her to lead the way.

My mistake, I am in fact running 1.4.1.1.
Sadly, asking her to play the lute didn't have any effect on the problem, although she played the lute just fine.
Asking her to lead the way also didn't work. The dialogue options worked, and I was able to select a location, ask her to speed up, slow down, stop leading, etc - but all she actually did was stand there.
Another odd thing I observed. I was in Markarth and left the city while she was supposed to be following me (but she was in fact just standing near the steps up to The Hag's Cure). She did warp herself to my location when I went through the load door to the Markarth exterior ... but then just turned around and went back *into* the city. I went back in myself and then out again, and this time she stayed with me ... but stayed standing at the city doors while Lydia and I sped off down the road (while Vilja was chatting with Lydia too, which was odd).
Thinking about it, I saw her re-entering a location we'd just left before too - we'd just left Belethor's in Whiterun after she'd asked to do some shopping, and decided she wanted to go back in, even though she was nominally following me again, having given me some scrolls.

One more suggestion: Tell her that you need to separate for a while. Tell her that you want to meet her at any of the inns listed as alternatives. When she walks away (which she probably will do), talk to her again and tell her that you have changed your mind.
Winterlove, aren't you the same person who has for a long time had other extraordinary odd problems with Vilja, among other things that she doesn't recognize when you have told her where to wander? I wonder, how old is your character? I.e. could it in fact be that we are trying to troubleshoot what could in fact be a corrupt save game? I mean, they do get corrupt at times, especially if you reload without first exist the game properly.
I'll ask Amgepo to look at this thread - he has made the reset-spell, it might be easier for him to understand what situations might not be covered by the reset-spell. If she had been busy with a scene and therefore wandering away, the reset-spell should have cured this.

OK. Asking to separate didn't work, either. Went through the dialogue, asked her to head to Solitude Inn, she headed off, I immediately spoke to her again, she asked if I'd changed my mind, I agreed we'd stay together. But thereafter, she went back to the behaviour as I described.
Aye, I'm the one who reported that she seemed to forget where she was to wander. I only saw that twice, and I've started a new game since then and I've not seen that since. I think that was a mis-report on my part (sorry).
My current character is quite young, Level 20, just under 23 hours of play. Could well be a corrupt save, I suppose.

The next time she goes away from you, select her in the console and type getpackagetarget.
This will bring an ID number. Post it here. If the first two digits aren't 00 or FF, take a look at the mod or DLC having that two digits as the Hex number in your load order and post the name of the mod.
EDIT: Do this while she is moving, once she stopped the result of the command will be void.

Are you using any other unique companions (Cerwiden, Atvir, Hoth etc)?
The only thing I can think of is that she is over and over forced into another alias, from another mod or the vanilla game, that tells her to go somewhere else.
What happens if you simply tell her to separate, leave her where she is (preferably in a safe interior), travel somewhere else and stay away for some game days? She might be OK when you return to her. Or, she might have went to the place she is continuously heading for, which could mean that the alias she is in isn't affecting her anymore. (You can of course always find her thanks to the mapmarker for her).

Hi gang;
I don't like to answer any of these posts because I know they are ment for Emma and her team however I am just posting my 2 cents because a similar experience happened to me just recently with Oblivion Vilja. It happened when I was testing a new "Give a Gift esp" for Emma just a few weeks back.
Here's what happened;
I was in the shivering isles and I had a bounty. I spoke to a guard and I was transported to Jail. Vilja did not spawn in jail. I fought my way out and then when I left the jail to go outside I got a load screen.
Now I am out side and I hear her summoning sound and but I don't see her. I fight the 2 bud guys and then summon Vilja. She appears and I start running to the door to go back to Tamrial.
Every time I look back Vilja is not there or she is running away. If I continue then every once in a while I will hear the summing sound as if she is being transported to me.
When I turned around and saw her running away I tried to follow her and when I came close she would then just stop and not move.
I came to the conclusion that my game became corrupt while testing the new esp and went back to an earlier save before I spoke with the guard and before I went to jail and Vilja worked fine.
So this time I just paid my fine and left the isles and vilja has been working perfectly.
There are 2 possibilities;
1) corrupt save 2) Vilja may have died while I was in jail
So the questions I have are;
Did you install any new mods recently? Have you tried going back to an earlier save game? Have you and Vilja been separated recently? Has the game transported you anywhere?
Cheers ~Pp

So the questions I have are; Did you install any new mods recently? Dogs of Skyrim. Awesome, but the rapid flurry of updates make me wonder if it may not be as stable as one would like, the main mod certain needs cleaning (which I have done). I've tried going back to the point where I first noticed the problem, which was ... ... just after I'd returned to Wilbert and Vilja with Sindra's book on lute playing. So, yes No. Right. I am proceeding on the assumption that it is a corrupt savegame, and have gone back to a point in time well before all of this (specifically, just after I'd recovered Wilbert's lute from Fort Fellhammer). I have just recovered Vilja's flute (and beaten Halvdan into a pulp, that never gets old ...) and I'm about to start the scene again where we separate so that Wilbert can teach Vilja how to play the lute and I can go get the lute-playing book. I will keep people posted Edit: Done the scene with Wilbert teaching Vilja to play the lute, retrieved the book, back travelling with Vilja, and she appears to be behaving herself now. Beginning to look like it was a corrupt save indeed.

Glad it's working fine now.
Kate, What you descrive in Oblivion seems like the jail bug. There is a bug in that game causing a chance of any NPC following you while you are sent to jail having the AI package in use in that momment destroyed.
Vilja is protected against that, but "see you sleep" removes that protection. There is a console command added in "see you sleep" to avoid it and also a patch in Vilja's optional download section, "Amgepo's patch for see you sleep", preventing it from happening. You can use either of both methods.
Once the glitch happens though, there is no known fix. It only affects the AI in use when you have been sent to prison. So, she may be unable to follow you on foot and in armor, on foot and in clothing, on horse and in armor or on horse and in clothing. Of course if this happens to you more than once, more than a single package could get screwed.

amgepoI have never used the "See You Sleep" mod. It never appealed to me. As far as the bug is concerned I apparently caught something. But I solved it by loading an earlier save before I went to jail and avoided going to jail completely. I paid my fine and got the "I have no greeting" bug instead ;D I haven't had a problem with Vilja since.

I'm using 1.4.01. I have had similar problems with Vilja.It usually turns out that she gets "stuck" in an animation/activity.Like when she randomly says"I'm so thirsty,I'm going to the pub for a drink you can tag along if you wish" Or she gets stuck in a "mounting bruse" animation and keeps running towards bruse then teleporting to me and seems to be trapped in an eternal loop of this animation. Several times I had this happen and everytime I went to a previous save it tunred out Vilja was trying to do something like shopping,going to the pub or having conversation with the local NPC's. I think what has triggered this for me is....As I have been playing with Vilja for a very long time,sometimes something she is saying or doing (like dancing on tables)I have seen many,many times.I wind up walking out of the inn before she has finished her dance/song.Usually, she just follows me and will do a few dance steps on the way to wherever I'm going and that will be all,but other times she seems to get "stuck". I am trying to learn to fraps my game so I can post a more detailed visual of whats going on.I also use several clothing mods RND mods and realistic taverns (which can change the way Vilja interacts inside them)So generally I do not post these things as bugs. I also noticed something small.When I challenge Vilja to a foot race(lets play a game section),when she is explaining the "rules "of the race, if I tab out of the conversation she will usually get stuck.If I let her finish her entire sentence and wait for her to inititate the race,everything goes fine. I also think Ultimate horses has created some issues with Vilja mounting and dismounting bruse multiple times.The mod lets you collect ingredients from horseback.This might be the cause of Vilja's mounting and dismounting several times as well.Though to be honest I'm pretty nub-sauce when it comes to mods and how things are triggered.
