I am playing Oblivion with Vilja as a companion for the first time. I have a very strange problem with her. Everything is fine when we are indoors, but when we step outside she treats me like I'm not wearing any clothing. She either refuses to speak to me (saying that if I'm not going to dress she's not going to talk) or makes comments about being embarrassed by me. Even stranger, If I do undress, she now treats me normally! I have no idea why this should be happening.....

Those robes you can grab during the very beginning of the game, while still in the starter dungeon ... are you wearing one of those?

Update. She doesn't like it when I'm not dressed, I must have just got a dialogue option mixed up earlier. And in does seem to be particular clothing she doesn't recognise. I bought some stuff and she's OK with me when I'm wearing those. I've started the game with the "alternate start arrive by ship mod" it's looking like the clothing that comes along with that is stuff Vilja doesn't recognise. I'll try a conventional game start and see if that's better... The clothing in question is "Darkened" armour and "Travellers" outfit. Another update... I can confirm that it's that clothing that's the issue. I disabled the mod and those items disappeared from my inventory. Dunno why Vilja doesn't recognise them, I thought any clothing would be OK? And it is odd that it only happens outdoors?

Certain clothing even in the unmodded game is considered to be naked by Vilja. Back when we were testing, I'd run into that problem and Emma explained it to me. I seem to recall that it is the cost of the clothing in question? Really cheap clothing counts as naked, I think.
It is *not* odd that it only works outdoors, but it *should* only happen while in town.

I'm sure I replied to this earlier, but it seems to have got lost.
What Blockhead says is correct. For some reason, the writer of the mod has set the clothing value at zero. Seems a bit strange but that's what they've done....

Yes, if you can handle the Construction set, you should alter this, or mention it to the mod author if he/she is still around. You see, it is not only Vilja who is affected by that you are wearing "nothing" - every npc look at zero value clothing the same way although they might not comment on it. But, their disposition will drop! So, you will lose disposition generally and have a harder time bartering when you are wearing 0-value-outfits.
Of course, the simple solution is to put on a ring or amulet or something that has at least a value of 1 gold.
Like Blockhead says, Vilja only minds when you are in a city, because she then finds it embarrassing that you are running around nude. In the wilderness, she doesn't mind at all, and not when you are at home.
