Rest, Relaxation, and PreparationArriving home, our heroes take time for some well-earned rest. Kirsikka's looking forward to the prospectd of some decent food. Meanwhile, Yumi has an announcement. "Vampires or not, I want to go back out in the field with the rest of you," she says.
"Hey Tadpole, you don't have to --" says Kirsikka, but Yumi cuts her off.
"Yes I do have to. I've got to do my part."
Nina's not happy, though she tries to talk a brave game. "We Forsworn women know we all have to face danger sometimes," she says.
Meanwhile, Nami and Felicidade clear the air. "Hey, Nami, I don't have my eyes on Rudi, and I can tell he doesn't have eyes for anyone but you, alright?"
"I know I shouldn't worry so much," says Nami, "but I've never, well...and you're so..."
"No, you are. Everyone knows it, and don't you forget it."
And that was that.

More Preparation, and Trepidation...While our heroes plan on departing on their next adventure in the morning, there's still a little time left to rest, reflect, or worry.
"Do you really have to go, Sister Yumi? Aren't you scared?"
"I do, and I am," says Yumi. She seems a little less kiddish, a little harder. Maybe it's her new armor. "Papa Rudi, can't you make Sister Yumi stay here?"
"Nina, if an In-Between woman sets her mind on something, it's impossible to dissuade her."
Side note: Aren't Nina's hands huge?Meanwhile, Felicidade does some last-minute maintenance, while Poet tries on her newest armor. Nami just rests and centers herself. Another side note: Poet looks a little more badass, don't you think?

On the Road to WinterholdAfter their rest break, our heroes head out to Winterhold. They take the journey in stages -- first to Blackthorn to work on the village, then to Windhelm. It's just south of Windhelm where they meet up with the Blood Dragon. The Blood Dragon quickly regrets intruding. Just south of Winterhold, they run into a bandit camp. The bandits don't last long either, but they have a nice fire going. So finally to Winterhold and the College. "Prove you're worthy or something," the gatekeeper says. Rudi does. Whoa! You're worthy! Our heroes slowly make their way up to the main building. As they're milling around inside looking for whomever they were supposed to talk to, Yumi stops dead in her tracks. She can't believe her eyes! To be continued, though I'll need some AI pix to continue it...

I never noticed how long the mastadons' tails were. Reminds me of Mr. Snuffleupagus!

WinterholdSee Page 51 of this thread for background.
Yumi can't believe her eyes. In her mind, the past comes crashing into the present in less time than it takes to tell.
"Kee-Lee?"
"Aia?"
The recognition, the screams of joy, the embrace, and the tears all come at once, but last for a long, long time. Neither Rudi nor the rest of the group even considers interrupting, though all want to hear Kee-Lee's story.

Kee-Lee's StoryIn which we hear Kee-Lee's harrowing tale of survival, learn a little more about In-Between magic, and even get to see a couple of real Skyrim screenshots!
After the screaming and tears of joy, Yumi and Kee-Lee settle down enough for Kee-Lee to tell her story. "I thought you'd drowned," Yumi says. "I thought you were goners for sure!"
"I thought I was too, but I found my footing. I heard you calling me, but I was too afraid of Lady Caranya to answer. I stayed where I was until nightfall. I wanted to squeeze a fire, but I didn't want to give away where I was. I spent the night under a tree, shivering. I'd never been so scared and lonely!"
Rudi and the gang know what she means by "squeezing a fire." It's an In-Between trick. It means starting a fire by squeezing the kindling. Many In-Betweens, including Rudi, can do this.
Kee-Lee continues: "The next day I sneaked away, heading south towards Dusk Port. I ran into a couple bandits along the way. I thought I was goners then, but I managed to break their hearts. They dropped their loot before they ran away, so I wound up with a little money."Rudi is surprised. Kee-Lee is the first In-Between he'd ever met who could do the hearbreak trick. It's a form of illusion magic used for defense, in which those affected see the caster as someone they absolutely could not want harmed. In this case, the bandits screamed, burst into tears, and ran away. Very few In-Betweens can do that trick.
"When I reached Dusk Port, I was able to buy some clothes and provisions with the bandits' money," says Kee-Lee. "Then I looked for a ship to stow away on. I found one, and hid below decks."
"How did you get aboard without being caught?" asks Poet.
"I passed without notice," grins Kee-Lee. Apparently, Kee-Lee can do that trick. It's not invisibility. It's not camouflage. It's another type of illusion, in which people see the caster as a perfectly natural part of the background. In this case, it was pefectly natural to see a tiny In-Between elf girl walking up a gangplank."The ship sailed for Skyrim, and I finally made my way to Winterhold. I tried to pass without notice in town, but Mirabelle Ervine saw right through me. Once more, I thought I was in big trouble, but she brought me here, and I've been here ever since. She really wants to know about In-Between tricks, and she says she's going to write a treatise, whatever that is." She leans closer to Yumi. "And you know what? She taught me the secrets of letters. I can teach you!"Rudi is a little shocked -- he'd no idea Yumi couldn't read. She has the sharpest memory of anyone he's ever met, and if anyone showed her how to do something, she'd always get it right away. "Wow," he thinks, "if that youngster learns to read books, she'll really be going places! I hope we all come through this all right."
There's no question that Kee-Lee will be joining our heroes on their quest, so they scrape together some armor for her. Still, the re-united friends spend a long time talking after the rest of the group retires.See? I told you I'd throw in an actual screenshot!

I'm redoing the Dawnguard quest line. A revisit of the improved Serana. Might make it a photo essay if there is some interest in it.
