For an undead River Elf whose people vanished long ago this is perhaps a bittersweet memory. I always wanted to build a village on stilts out in the middle of a lake, but I could never find the right models to make a proper job of it. Stroti's lake pole house resource files are about the closest I've been able to find to what I want. Night of the blue flowers. It's so lovely and peaceful once an Oblivion gate has been closed. Enchanted tattoos, clothing, rings and amulets can work just as well as armor and are a lot lighter. Eiolynn and Else God Hater had a monumental scrap in the West Weald Inn which made everyone in the room squeak and run away. In her own strange way Eiolynn liked Else God Hater.

Speaking of getting weighed down by heavy equipment. Every self respecting adventurer in the environs of Cyrodil that is out for the long dungeon and exploration hauls always carries at least 10 pounds of repair hammers. No matter what the weapon, from crappy wooden bows to glass to possessed by daedra, they all instantly fall apart to quickly become useless junk. Then a few smacks of a repair hammer somehow fixes anything. And of course, the repair hammer, obviously made of the same material as women's trendy modern shoes, will last just long enough (barely) for you to find another hammer.
Eventually, in what must be some sick and twisted irony of the powers that be, once you have smacked roughly 45,000 weapon-like objects, for reasons unknown, the smacking of your say, glass bow, becomes much more proficient and the smacking device lasts much longer. But of course by then you are packing several million ducats of ultra exotic weapons and your upper body strength has increased where you aren't too burdened to carry all those smackers and hurt-a-lot devices. But of course by then you have laid waste to any person, creature, monster, or other and there is nothing left to smack except your weapons.
Squishy once tinkered with a mod that would drop a broken repair hammer on the ground everywhere the intrepid adventurer goes every few hundred paces and these would glow faintly in the dark. By the time all the Oblivion gates are all closed and the folks of Cyrodil breathe a collective sigh of relief the entire area when viewed from up on top of the surrounding mountains in the dead of night glows like a demented christmess tree.

True enough. Eiolynn usually carries at least 20 repair hammers and with some types of weapons and armour it's a constant battle to keep them in a functional condition. As a keen alchemist (read poisoner) she tends to linger in the Oblivion levels collecting plant material. This tends to lead to a good many scraps with creatures and Dremora that feel compelled to interrupt her, - which in turn leads to constant weapon repairs. Dremora weapons might be good for giving enemies a good clout, but only at the cost of constant maintenance because they are so fragile. Eiolynn found a Dremora katana that its owner didn't seem to want anymore and because it was the first one she'd seen after many dozens of hours of gameplay she insisted on keeping it. The image of the trail of broken hammers would be about the size of the situation ever since she started using the thing. Mind you her armourer skill levels have been climbing nicely as a result. Of course developing the knack of summoning Bound Armour and Weapons would go a long away towards solving any repair problems. In this case Eiolynn cheated though because the Runestone was only about a 100 yards away from the Oblivion gate. When I made her my player character I deliberately nerfed her ability to use magic (and her agility stats) to prevent her from becoming a game breaking 'god character', so a Runestone is about the only way for her to get equipment like this,

Good to see you back. I've been learning some Skyrim modding during this Wuhan flu stuff. Much more picky than Oblivion. There was a crash... But I've got the basics of NPC adding + Body Slide & Outfit Studio etc, down...lol. That's a start. I've barely scratched actually playing, but the wife is trying to get through the multitudes of quests. Vilja's in particular...who is a bigger nag than in Oblivion. Plus, she needs time to get over the PC abandoning her in Cyrodiil. The game is set like 200 years later, but realistically from the Vilja/PC relationship, it seems about 5-10 years on. Extra sweetroll version below...Vilja even wants you both to go on a diet due to 'love handles'. Got to have a dog...both girls worked for Lady Rena Bruiant, after-all. Everything is 3 node for the skeleton...which has everything moving very lifelike. Oblivion has a few 3 node skeletons...but limited animations that use it. Skyrim has about a billion...and editors to build your own. But, thanks to various types of Skyrim Set Body, you can have all sorts of different body types skin types for both men & women akin to Sims4.

It's nice to be back. I think Skyrim would be a step too far for me with this illness I have. I've watched my daughter play it quite a bit though and I've been very much impressed by the new environmental models and textures. The new people models and their animations as certainly impressive as well. I don't really do any modding now, though I did give Eiolynn's face a small tidy up just recently which improved her looks a bit; - or improved her looks about as much as can be done with someone who is UnDead, but without making her look like a ghastly rotting zombie which she's definitely not. During my latest session Eiolynn made the trip to Camoran's Paradise and played the part of being a prisoner in the Forbidden Grotto, - or about as well as she could manage with her conspicuous tattooed body. Orthe and his 3 chums decided to pick on her so she took them all out by giving them a few knuckle sandwiches. Orthe in particular got shoved into a larva stream with a righteous punch which was very satisfying. Davela Hiaren at the Imperial Bridge Inn taught Eiolynn the art of the bare knuckled fighter and on this occasion it served her well. A few foolish Daedra who tried picking on Eiolynn got some knuckle sandwiches as well before she finally made her way out of the Grotto with Eldamil in tow. And then it was boring monologuing time with Mankar Camoran. As you can see Eiolynn wasn't taking much notice. Eiolynn eventually look him out after a thousand or so knuckle sandwiches which was also very satisfying. She did get a grudging, 'The Fates chose well', from him before he died though. It was the first time I'd ever tried using hand to hand on Mankar Camoran, - it takes some doing (this was at level 24), but it was an awful lot of fun and the fight ranged all over Mankar Camoran's throne room before it was done.

Standard Eiolynn standing in front of an Oblivion gate posed snap. Nice place for your holidays? Eiolynn is always a little regretful when the gates are all finally closed and the Oblivion crisis is over. Going back to fighting bandits and marauders who fall down and die if you breath hard on them just seems so hollow and empty after fighting enemies in the realms of Oblivion. As well as that there's the all great plants and Daedra body parts that can be collected to use for atchemical purposes.

With those gates... My game play always leans towards aesthetics. Somebody poured a huge amount of time and energy into Oblivion making all those plants which are correct in appearance of their RL counterparts. Thus my usual trips to Cyrodil always end up the same: Martin is forever stuck outside of Kvatch awaiting an escort and I have at least one house loaded to the rafters in collected plants. This of course minimizes the number of butt ugly oblivion gates which spoil my scenery.
The downside to my trips to the Developer Disaster Zone, the center of Tamriel which consists of one rather small and architecturally challenged city and six small towns far far smaller than the smallest urban blight on the landscape of the world as found in Arena, is leveling and PC improvement. Let's see. Park your character in the water, carefully placed to be swimming against a rock and come back in 72 RL hours. With a few similar mind numbing efforts she can then leap to the top of the tallest garbage heaps which she must leap off of just right to avoid becoming a PC puddle which, repeated only some 380 or so times now affords her the ability to outrun any hazard in the world and come close to being able to fly. Which of course you desperately need since you haven't been able to level up in most other desperately needed attributes and all those rats you first encountered have metamorphosed into Minotaur kings.
Did I ever go off on a tangent there. So where wasn't I? Oh yes. The end result of all this. My PC usually ends up around level 5 or so with the worlds worst case of Insomnia, out in the west weald picking flowers. Give the developers their due, Oblivion aptly describes my usual game play. But it is quite tempting to brave the mind numbing leveling up just to emulate Eiolynn smacking Monkey Camelnutts into the dirt. Preferably done by 'hands-and-feet-on-the-mouse-and-keyboard Squishy, delivered by my usual near naked babe.

The plants in Oblivion are beautifully modelled and absolutely plead to be learned about and collected by a player character. For the past few play throughs Eiolynn has taken Assassin as her class since a wide variety of useful skills fall within its compass. All forms of magic are a minor skill for her except for Alchemy , but then I only ever allow her raise her magicka to 60 with the way her stats have been nerfed. Armourer, Block and Hand to Hand are minor skills as well, but I don't mind that as it's nice to be able to work up a skill without it being a part of the levelling up treadmill. The levelling system is a bit daft though since Eiolynn can sit up all night practicing her alchemy and level up three times, - or fight a long running battle in the Oblivion realms and do the same thing with her Blade skills, BUT I don't know how many times she would need to run or swim around Cyrodiil to achieve the same thing. It seems too that while running across country she only has to do few modestly daring jumps off some boulders to push herself into the next level with her Acrobatic skills. And don't get me started on Eiolynn levelling up magic skills by constantly casting the most basic spells while she walks between the cities if she wants to have any kind of a chance at being able to cast 'Snowball' three times in a row. I won't even mention how broken Archery is. I've read various player guides for Oblivion that tell you how to level up faster and exploit every loophole in the game. I'm afraid that kind of thing just leaves me cold and makes me wonder why anyone would want to play that way. Like you I enjoy being in the gameworld and sometimes I'll deliberately let Eiolynn take the long way round to a destination just because I enjoy the walk through the landscape. Eiolynn is a fighter, she always has been with Blade being her primary skill and she doesn't mind a good scrap, but it seems to me that the leveling system for the warrior classes is stupid with the game having a bias towards heavy armour and blunt weapons, - with axes being classed as 'Blunt' which is just plain crazy. The other thing I find really daft is that when Eiolynn put paid to the Black Bow Bandit gang at about level 18 they were all wearing a King's ransom in expensive heavy armour and weapons due to the stupid way the levelling system works. You can see how Eiolynn equips herself and apart from a better sword and shield she stays much the same for as long as I want to keep on playing her. If I don't watch myself I'm going to start modding my game again so that I can remove most of the daftness. Giving Manky Combover a hiding though was an awful lot of fun even if H2H is a bit too overpowered and god-like at higher levels IMHO. I read somewhere that the decision was made to keep the cities small with not a very large number of inhabitants so that the NPCs living in the cities could be given individual daily routines operated by the game's AI system. I have to admit I do like that aspect of the game even if the downside is that the cities have a population that's not much bigger than the population of the street where I live.

... This of course minimizes the number of butt ugly oblivion gates which spoil my scenery. ... www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/33533/This can help; anything from just the minimum gates required to complete the main quest, and no respawning, to 100 gates, all respawning. (game default is 60 gates, respawning) ...the mind numbing leveling up.... www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/1888An older mod, but worked quite well for me. Removes the leveling drudge, no more tracking and assigning points, just play the game and this mod handles things in the background. Many options to tweak, or just select one of the default setups; can be added to an existing character, can even change setups for a character.

I definitely want to have a go at that levelling mod as it seems to be exactly what I'm looking for. Eiolynn is a very custom character and being able to preset her levelling limits to keep her appropriately nerfed as an UnDead instead of having to remember and do it manually would be really great. 'Open All the Gates' I downloaded this ages ago, but for some reason I never tried it out. I know Eiolynn likes lurking about in the Oblivion realms and causing mayhem, but 100 gates that won't stay closed might be too many even for her.

At the final battle in the Imperial City (Light the Dragonfires) something went wrong. Eiolynn, Martin, Captain Steffan, Chancellor Ocato and a collection of guardsmen had a tough old fight getting to the gate to the Temple District only when Eiolynn went through the gate and set about giving as many Daedra as she could find a seriously good hiding she suddenly got the feeling she was all on her lonesome. With gates pouring out Daedra as fast as she could kill them it was not a good situation and when her favourite sword broke it was well time to cut and run and see where everyone had got to.
And would you believe it everyone was queued up on the other side of the gate just standing around. A quick chat to Martin and he said he was going to follow Eiolynn, - only he didn't and Eiolynn had a tough time getting back through the gate with all the Daedra and Dremora doing their best to kill her for a second time. And once again everyone was just standing around like they were waiting for a bus.
It was about then that I realised I'd struck some kind of bug in the game and screwed things up. Somehow in all the excitement I'd forgotten to make a save after killing Manky Combover so at that point I decided it was a good time to try out that 'Fishing in Cyrodiil' mod I downloaded ages ago and never got around to doing anything with.

... It was about then that I realised I'd struck some kind of bug in the game and screwed things up. .... Search the uesp wiki for that quest; near the bottom you will find the "setstage" console commands for the quest, as long as you have not already failed the quest (the failure is registered in your save so the only way past that is restore a previous save) you can use this command to advance to the next stage or even complete the quest. It's quite simple, bring up the console, type in - setstage 'name of quest' 'number' (quest name is abbreviation as used by game, number corresponds to stages of the quest) Here is page for that quest: en.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Light_the_DragonfiresIn this case, to complete the quest the command is - setstage MQ16 100 There are some notes about bugs in the final battle and possible solutions, you may have encountered one of these.

Thanks jgf. What it looks like I did was go through the gate to the Temple District about half a second before Martin and doing that locked the gate to him going through. Seems silly really. If my character is supposed to be playing bodyguard then it's only sensible for Eiolynn to go first ahead of Martin to deal with any hostiles that are rushing at him. My last save is at Camoran's Paradise which was pretty daft of me since I've only been a gamer since the 1990's and the first thing you learn to do is to save when anything significant has happened. I'll have a fresh go at 'Light the Dragonfires' and see how I get on. Even if I'd done a save it was all a mess so I wouldn't have been all that proud of winning through and completing the quest.
