Forgive me if you've discussed this before, but I haven't seen any discussions on Oblivion's play.
Is it my imagination or are the stock characters ugly? Is there any character generation like in MW? Or faces, not brow ridges, nose details, chins yucky choice stuff.
ok, so I made it out of the sewers and returned the amulet to Joeffre. repaired and rested at Chourrel(sp?) Heck of a long walk from Imperial city. Very boring walk, a few wolves, rats, goblins, and bandits met and dispatched along the way, still level one. Not sure I want to walk to Kvatch, and repel demon gate thing for next part of main quest. My warrior is slow.
The only mods I have are the unofficial patches, and Wyre Bash.
suggestions or comments?

- Nearly everyone is ugly in Oblivion. It's almost impossible to make a non-ugly character. There is a program called FaceGen exchange that will let you copy a face from an NPC to your saved character (provided you actually find an NPC who is not ugly). There are also various face fixing plugins, but I don't know enough about them to comment further.
- Fast Travel & quest markers (like in Guild Wars)

I haven't used any face mod on my Oblivion character but I'm happy with the result, so I guess it's only a matter of practicing with the Facegen once you master it and get something you like. It works very different from Morrowind. You're right about the bodies: the vanilla ones are pretty ugly. Many body mods lies around on the web, choose the one you prefer or use Robert's male body mod at Emma's if you're running a male character. I could post some links for you later... When I manage to remember which ones (you know, I'm not playing TES in these months, so I forgot a lot of things about the game). Don't hurry in doing the mainquest, take it slow, explore the wilderness, the cities and run sidequests before heading back to it. Oh and don't abuse of the fast travel too... That's TES and has to be traveled by feet (or horse) as much as possible.

Another thing: personallly I found the Guild quest-lines more interesting than the Main Quest. You might want to join the Thieves Guild or some such and put off dealing with juaffry and/or Kvatch. Oh, another thing: some of the old Morrowind tricks don't work. For example: the Atronach birth sign is pointless in Oblivion. And there's no spear. Some things, like waiting 72 hours to fix (some) problems, still work.

For better faces, there are mods that affect your characters looks and there are mods that affect the look of all the npcs in Cyrodiil. For your characters looks, there are plenty of Save-game-downloads to get if you head over to TESNexus and browse the SaveGame-section. You can switch your race etc at any time by calling up the console and typing ShowRaceMenu (note that you have to SAVE THE GAME AGAIN WHEN YOU HAVE FINISHED YOUR NEW LOOK AND BEFORE YOU CLOSE THE CONSOLE) If you want to use a custom race, there are plenty of these, as well, many of them very good looking. Like for instance Korana's Hidden Elves. Check the race section of Nexus for grabbing a race mod for your own personal taste. As for npc looks, you can download a mod that will change the face textures. this is one of several alternate face textures for npcs.
As for the main quest - I guess you should play it once, but... the mainquest is (IMO) the worst part with Oblivion. I do like everything else, but if you expect a main quest like the one in Morrowind, you're going to be sorely disappointed. Do the main quest once, but then just forget about Oblivion portals and the emperor. There are man fun things to do in Cyrodiil, but the main quest simply isn't one of them!
There are so many mods around that there is hard to give any advice apart from that browsing Nexus will give you plenty of options for almost any kind of mods. Myself, I find bedroll-mods and a mod to summon my horse absolutely essential. On top of that, a good housemod of course. And, as you might have guess, a good companion. For companions, I'd recommend my companion Vilja (don't worry, she'll be your friend, not your lover) and for housemods I'd recommend that you have a list at my list for companionfriendly housemods in this forum. I like mods by Korana and Khetienna (and of course I like my own houses ).

I was going to suggest a rather good companion mod for Oblivion, but on second thoughts it's probably better to play solo for a while until you are used to the world - her chatter can become a bit distracting...

Well I re-rolled once more, to a female Nord scout, she made it out of sewers, figured out how to use map travel, found gate to Shivering Isles (I got GOTY edition) turned in amulet, and then joined fighters guild. Chased some lizard around to see if she was putting cougars in a house where a lady loves rats. Rats again? Much better at running around. My character doesn't look too ugly. Haven't looked at much in mods. Still trying to survive. Not focusing on mainquest just now. Using TAB to access my character's inventory is very strange. Finally figured out that to cast a healing spell I need to use C. Phew. It's a pretty world, but the controls are very unusual. I prefer Morrowind so far, but am giving it a good tryout.
Thanks for the suggestions and input!

well, I spent most of the morning d/l ing roberts bodies, some slof stuff, vilja and the riverhouse...oof, I am tired. Tesnexus is a wonderful source. It will be interesting to see what I should install first. right now I will just play, and no one mentioned function keys? I discovered that I can see my stats, etc that way too. *sigh* so much to learn.

for what level, is Shivering Isles? There is no level requirement for it (tho I'd recommend you to grow up your character a bit). And yes, it's a very fun expansion! Maybe better than Oblivion itself.

The thing about Shivering Isles and your character's level is that even the unique items are leveled. So do a quest at level one and you'll get a spiffy sword ... that's not so spiffy when you reach level five.

huauhauhauha I just played Morrowind and I have to admit, I'm having the SAME problems in Oblivion. Trying to use magic with "R" hahaha and I try to access the menu and the camera goes crazy. And I played Oblivion for almost two years, I think. Or maybe more...
However, one thing that helped my Morrowind experience was learning that doing other things instead of the main quest first improves the game a lot. In Morrowind I was the master of two guilds when I went through the main quest, I also recommend trying other things. But pick up something like Francescos Overhall, because when you arrive in level 30, every bandit will wear a full set of glass, scamps will be extincted as well as wolves and other low level creatures. That's the worst in Oblivion.
Also I prefer TNR Faces to make NPCs more interesting.

I agree with marek as far as TNR goes; It's a great mod. I'm on the fence with what it does to Khajiit and Argonians, though. Also in that vein, try Django's Unique Features. It adds new agemaps that add facial features like scars, moles, etc.
Finally, I'll also recommend Better Looking Dunmer, Better Looking Redguards, Better Looking Dremora, and Better looking Wood Elves. They're quite nice, though you'll need to do some fiddling in Wrye Bash to make them play well with TNR.
Finally, there's a mod that gives Dark Elves their characteristic ears back from Morrowind (I think it's Morrowind Style Dunmer Ears). That said, this will also replace the ears of Dremora, Golden Saints, and Dark Seducers... but I kind of think the change is for the better.
